I admit to being prejudiced, but I suggest the Guzzi. It feels like a V-twin, and the maintenance is easy. My Norge has been trouble free, and it's one of the most reliable bikes I've owned. It's an addictive ride with personality.
It's the kind of bike that becomes more enjoyable the more I ride it.
However, if you can get a test ride on each of the bikes you're considering and form your own opinion, that would be best. What works for me might not work for you at all.

Wow, glad you're OK. As noted above, bikes can be fixed/replaced, but there's only one Grump! : )

I use one of these on every one of my brakelights (they make them for LED and incandescent):

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ABLE-2-SHO-ME-7-PATTERN-LE D-STROBE-EFFECT-FLASHER-NEW-IN-BOX-FREE-SHIPPING-/ 120924229678?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories &hash=item1c27a5502e&vxp=mtr#ht_3570wt_1187

Waterproof, smaller than my blackberry, and easy connection. I highly recommend them. And if you have 2 light sources (bulbs, LED's, whatever), its a 2 channel box so you can set up a wig-wag pattern if you want.

Here's a few pics.

It's not very clear in the pics but the righthand framerail is pushed in where the puck sticks on & is abraded on the bottom corner as well.

Rear subframe's in several pieces, wiring loom's damaged, both mirrors, bars, hugger, swingarm, seat latch, seat, sliders, footpegs & mounts on rh side.

I'm pretty certain it'll be beyond economic repair.

Looks like he hit you pretty hard.
RU OK?
Walking away from any collision is a good thing.
If the driver is "at fault" won't his insurance pay for repairs? (I know nothing re: French insurance claim laws)
FWIW & IMHO:If you get a cash settlement, buy a Triumph.
(If EBR do not come out w/a Uly replacement in the next 4 years I'm thinking Tiger 800 for my good self)

Yeah but not uploaded yet, it was an old Opel Astra.

It'll need another bonnet, wing, indicator & headlamp probably, but cheap diy repair with used parts.

Wish I could say the same.

Daddy's the insured party with sonny as named driver.

Dad's premium will get hiked next year because it's the kid's 2nd accident apparently.

Daddy & Mummy were not at all pleased.

Nice people actually, we're the same age group, they were much more upset than the kid.

I was a little stiff on friday & saturday but not feeling any after effects (apart from annoyance) gear did it's job & my guardian angel earned his bonus again.

If the insurance company will basically buy the bike from you (fair market value) then sell it back for a really cheap salvage price, you can just repair the mechanical issues and leave the cosmetic issues as "adventure marks".

My Uly is now a bit of a mess, but it's paid for and working well. It was a good deal for me if you don't consider the 40 or so hours of sourcing / rebuilding / repairing I had to do. Or the latent undiscovered crash damage that could have caused another accident. Other than that, it's good! ; )

I'm insured fully comp so I'll get paid for the bike & the insurers will fight it out between them.

It'll not be enough to buy a Triumph but maybe a used Stelvio.

Would that it was that simple Reep.

Under current French law you could buy back the wreck & put it back on the road, but you can't sell,or transfer the title, only sell it for scrap or parts.

This is what happened with the M2 because I bought the wreck back & swapped the frame.

However, since then things have tightened up.
Now it has to be inspected by a qualified insurance assessor before, during, & after repair.
Repairs have to be carried out by a recognized professional, it matters nothing that I may be more experienced & qualified than a shop's grease monkey, DIY is a nono.
Furthermore any essential damaged parts must be replaced with new & receipts must be produced.

These laws may sound draconian & a total pita, but they're aimed at the automobile industry primarily
The goal partly being to stop badly repaired cars getting back on the road.
there have been numerous cases of "cut & shut" vehicles being involved in fatal accidents.

& also to increase new car sales.

As a professional on the road I can see the point of it, I've seen some of the horrors that come out of chop shops too.

I'll let this one go for spares.
The thought has occurred to me to look for a Uly to replace it & buy back the wreck for parts but frankly I can't be arsed & the wife would go right into one.

She's already made it clear that she'd prefer me to stop riding, but she knows it's not going to happen & she won't force me to choose, even though it worries the life out of her.
So I'm going to go for something a little more sober to please her a little.
Not a Geezer Glide though.

I had to go to the state police to get my salvage title back to a streetable title. The bike was just a cursory inspection, were it a car I'd have needed reciepts for *everything*... So its getting bad here also.

Sounds like sonny needs to spend a season on two wheels, the pedal-power kind, before he gets behind the wheel again.

The Stelvio looks like a pretty cool ride, not geezer-ish at all.

A couple of mates here are pushing me towards other bikes & I'd value opinions.

At the moment, the Stelvio is still top of my list with a Uly in 2nd spot.
Reasons.
I've always fancied a Guzzi & the Stelvio floats my boat, however I've not ridden one yet.
The Uly I know.
I've got the tools knowhow & all that, plus I can pick up a Uly for about two thirds the price of the Guzzi. & keep the wrecked TT for parts (yes I know what I posted earlier but that was disgust talking)

One mate is saying get a Trumpet, but my budget won't stretch to an Explorer & I don't like the other Tigers very much.
I really don't want a chain drive.
Ducati Multistrada & Benelli Tre-K, are both exotic enough but f'ing ugly & again chain drive, relatively cheap though.
I've ridden a BMW 1200 GS & it was an outstanding bike, but it just lacks something, perhaps it's me, but it just doesn't ring any bells.
The Yam SuperTen would do but it's beyond my price range.

Away from the big trailie image the Guzzi 1200 Griso tempts me, purely because of its looks.

Any thoughts or experiences will be gratefully received & pondered over, but not necessarily acted upon.

Really glad you are OK. Could definitely have been bad. Shame about the bike, since only 1700ish were made.

And all credit to you for your self control. I'm rather suspect that had I been involved, the young man would have been so upset at being late for his tennis event he would have repeatedly beat on my fists with his face.

Be well, Glad you are safe, Dave

Took some more pics yesterday, when I loaded it on my trailer.

Why was it on my trailer?
You may well ask that question, I certainly have.

Here's the players.
1. AXA Assurance, my insurance company.
2. AXA Assistance, the insurance company's recovery, breakdown, emergency, division.
3. MBD the recovery company.
4. DG8 Motors, a Renault dealers where the Insurance assessor is booked to see the bike.

#3 tells me I have to tell them where the bike has to be taken for the insurance inspection.
I contact #1 who books the "expert" to assess the damage at #4.
I call 3 to tell them that it has to go to 4.
3 tells me that they can't do that on my say so alone & that they need confirmation from 2.
I call 2 to tell them this, they say that they can't confirm this & that I must call 1 to tell them to call 2 so they can then call 3.

Are you with me so far? Good because I'm not sure I am!

A couple of days later, 4 calls me wanting to know where the vehicle is & seems rather surprised when I tell him it's a bike, I also tell him to contact 3 direct to arrange things.
4 then calls me back to say that 3 won't do anything without authorisation from 2 which they've not yet had.
WTF!!!
I then call 2 to tell them to get their finger out, & find that the re-delivery is only within a range of 10 km & that 4 who is engaged by 1 is 50 km therefore I have to drive to 3 & pay the difference.
I call 1 and ask them exactly wtf is going on, they eventually admit that they don't have an assessor near 3 but they can possibly find one. however if I want to claim for my helmet boots gloves & jacket I have to leave them with the bike.
So I have to go to 3 anyway.
At this point I erupt & say well if I'd known that, I wouldn't have bothered with their f'ing assistance, I'd have gone with my own trailer & taken the bike home to save myself a trip, as evidently I have to go there again anyway.
The nice lady of the claims department at 1 now says it can't be inspected at my home & asks me very nicely, if I'm going there anyway could I pick the bike up & drop it at 4.
WTF WTF WTF!!!!!!
She'll see I get a commercial gesture on my next renewal.

This is now Thursday afternoon one week after the accident & I'm spitting nails. Tomorrow's Friday & then nothing moves for the weekend, if the bike's not at 4 on Monday, **** knows when things will get done. I can see the riding season slipping incrementally away while they all play pattycake.

And that's why my bike's in the trailer.

Who's on 1st??

I know the French are renowned for their bureaucracy but your situation about takes the biscuit.
Be sure to claim all travel expenses for the time you are without the bike/receive the settlement when filing the claim against the douche that tagged you.

think that bike is repairable ,so do not give it up that easy! (i don't know how the rules are in France!?)

but if it was mine i go for it.
maybe it's not gonna be a museum piece ,but thats not where buells are made for!

As far as new bikes go, I was looking at the BMW F800GS and the Triumph Tiger XC when my TT was giving me fits over fueling issues. I've been setting mine up more as something I can take off road and on long rides though. So I may be totally off on that for you.

I like the Moto Guzzi Breva 1100 too, but again, my tastes don't always follow the norm.

Hope you are all healed up from the crash so you can now focus on your mental health while sorting the bits out with the various levels of Insurance Bureaucracy.

Had a voicemail from the insurance assessor last night.

He thinks the bike's economically repairable.
I think he's talking out of his arse but that's not my problem.

I called his office this morning & they confirmed that includes replacing both front & rear parts of the frame. I presume they're talking about the main chassis frame & the rear subframe, but I'll have to wait until I see the detailed report to be sure.

Anybody know if complete frames are still available?

They also put a really lowball value on the bike. I spent hours trolling through all the bike sites & I couldn't find one at the price they're quoting, even the cheapest one online has nearly twice the mileage of mine is 6 months older & several hundred more than their valuation.
The online "bluebook" equivalent here puts it at about 30% more than they do.
They say they'll check & get back to me.

Looks like it's going to be a slow process.
