http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2 012/03/obama-to-iran-and-israel-as-president-of-th e-united-states-i-dont-bluff/253875/ I don't know how much of this is "wag the dog", or if any rational plans are contemplated. I certainly don't want to occupy Iran, but maybe, just maybe, we could support the democracy lovers better. The existing regime in Iran is theocratic, evil, and promises Armageddon. I am personally prejudiced against them. So should we? can we? how? |

http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/292658/syri an-ironies-victor-davis-hanson http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/292510/die- die-foreigners-mark-steyn Insert bitter condemnation of Bush's strategy here. Insert ironic statement of Obama's declaration that Afghanistan is the "good war" while Iraq is the "bad war" and the "huge success" Obama's policy ( a flawed, and mistaken, as we now see.... copy of Bush's ) is for the bad guys. Note Iraq and Afghanistan are just 2 fronts in the war against Civilization. ( by whom? This Admin will not say ) Note that Syria and Iran are the leading suppliers of death for the people of the region, and their support by China and Russia. Documented. Heavily. http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/292416/tehr an-s-ticking-nuclear-time-bomb-peter-brookes http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/292317/resi gning-iran-robert-joseph Bit of a pity we don't have a space program that would let us aim the incoming asteroids at specific targets. Obama is just pandering to the Jewish vote since it is an election year. He won't do anything to Iran. Rather than listening to Obama's rhetoric just look at the number of times he has thrown Israel under the bus during his time as POTUS. That is really how he feels and how he treats Israel. I hope the Jewish community is smart enough to see that. |

Your neighbors, your classmates, your sons and daughters, are the ones maimed and killed by Iranian bombs, and Iranian training. Most of the ones murdered are Muslim. Decapitation is a time honored tradition in that region. I favor decapitating the governments, but not occupying the lands. |

Depends on how big the rocks, and from how far up. That's why i am far less than thrilled we no longer have a working space program, while Russia does, China is working hard on one ( and does not really care how many test pilots die to develop working hardware )and Iran wants to be up there too. A nuclear armed orbital battlestation? Science fiction? Not so much. There have been plans. Also, just to raise the point, stoning someone to death is accepted practice in a growing part of the planet. Usually for such massive crimes as allowing yourself to be raped, or being the sister of a male who did an injustice to another family, while his family has power and influence. Iran, for example. |

Yeah... that's kind of why I was quoting from The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. GREAT book and wouldn't it be truly KARMIC in justice if we could do just that from the moon? Just escape the 1/6 gravity and the rock WILL re-enter the Earth's atmosphere. |

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_IRAN_THR EATS?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2 012-03-21-14-21-37 But government officials have said there are no known or specific threats indicating Iranian plans to attack inside the U.S. So...."government officials" have never heard the Iranian President for life? Never heard the Mullahs that run Iran? Never watched the "protests" calling for Death to America? Haven't seen the morning children cartoons? Took 80 hours of "cover your a$$" seminars this year? Slaughter, you like rocks? Try crowbars and telephone poles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinetic_bombardment Project Thor ranged from the crowbars, for the hordes of Soviet tanks in Europe, to the telephone poles for hardened bunkers, ICBM silos, Sub bays, and missile cruisers. For more from one of the "inventors" http://www.jerrypournelle.com/index.html The use of millimeter wave receivers for guidance lets you track on metal objects reflecting the background "glow" from space. Passive guidance fast response strikes. The concept uses a bundle of bars in a stealthed plastic shroud, with a small solid fuel de-orbit motor. You'd kick them out of the Shuttle ( remember those? ) every launch, until you had them all over the place. A threat is discovered, the appropriate sat is given the order, and it targets a specific site. Like the Fulda Gap, a Chinese ICBM silo, or AQ headquarters. |

For years I've heard tales of the military wasting money. And, it does. There are bureaucratic reasons for some things, other things are because of bad decisions, and others idiocy from DC..... BUT. Sometimes the money is worth every penny. The silly complaints, the expensive hammers, ( made of beryllium bronze so it doesn't spark when you are defusing an unexploded bomb ) or the toilet seats, ( for B-52s, made of plastic that won't flash into poisonous fumes when exposed to the gamma rays from a nearby nuclear explosion ) were complaints that showed that the complainer was ignorant of the realities of today. I present you the $200 combat shirt. A $200 shirt? Is this some screwy fashion thing? Is the Army going "gay makeover"? Judge for yourself. http://www.strategypage.com/military_videos/milita ry_photos_20111130124259.aspx |

I sell to the Gov many times the cost of the forktruck loads of paper work cost many times the price of the item We did a Job at a Engineering unit the Staff Sargent Bill the job out at 3% mark up and youll get it I said Ill never make a profit that way. He started laughing you ll see you ll see we did the job no problem on schedule. sent in the proper request for payment etc about a pound of paper. Nothing for 90 days then the checks started flowing the penalties for no preforming by the contract dates go both ways Checks came in for the penalty every day they didnt pay the Contract on time The penalty checks added up to over 4 times the total job cost. My CPA had a hard time accounting for it in taxes that year. Thats one reason we pay so much for Government. |

Look; Israel is going to bomb Iran as soon as they get a bomb. The resultant war will give the oil companies the excuse to double the price of oil. The Israelis will stop the threat, the oil companies will quadruple their profits, and everybody will be happy. Except the consumer. But we get screwed so often, we're getting to like it. |

John, If you are confident of your predictions, then put your money into oil or oilfield services stocks/funds/ETFs. Jeff makes the astute observation. How can you blame American or European oil companies for the price manipulation by what is truly an illegal cartel, OPEC. |

John, If you are confident of your predictions, then put your money into oil or oilfield services stocks/funds/ETFs. I'm so broke, I can't pay attention. I'm unable to work, and can't even pay my mortgage. The only stock I can afford is some Swanson's Chicken Broth to cook with. However, It's no coincidence that all it takes is an imagined threat to oil supplies to cause prices to jump. It's a game that started in the summer of 1973, and it was so successful that it recurs on a regular basis. There's always a "very good" reason for price increases. There's also an unbroken string of record quarterly profits for the oil companies. As far as Israel goes, they really don't give a damn about what the rest of the world thinks. They will do whatever they think is necessary to insure their survival. They've proven that many times. Who do you think will be the prime target if Iran does get an atomic bomb? The Iranians don't like the US, but they passionately hate the Jews. Just my opinion. |

http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/295102/iran -s-win-win-win-bomb-victor-davis-hanson One could argue that oil companies will have increased profits when sales go up, right? Since the US companies pay more in taxes than they make in profits, that's more taxes for our social programs. So increased oil sales are a good thing. Right? Just as increased cigarette sales are good for children's healthcare. At least that's what the massive taxes were supposed to go for, according to the people who sold those taxes to themselves and us. So profits go up as sales go up, no matter the percentage of profit. How big a percentage is ok to you? The speculators job is to bet on the cost next month/year/etc. If there is prospect of war in the oil producing middle east, prices will rise, right? Less supply, higher prices. Ditto if anyone considers BHO's energy policy. Less supply ( down 19% on public land ) means higher prices. Right? So Feel free to blame the speculators for driving prices up, but I'd bet the same way if I was in that market. I'm not defending the greedy &*(&^( in the oil companies or on Wall Street, but they are reacting, as required by law to the policies of the Gov. The Gov. wants high prices to force you to use Unicorn farts and moonbeams instead..... What? it's pond scum, tire pressure and white roofs? Makes sense. So we cover Arizona in glass pipes and ponds, changing the climate, and draining the Colorado river before it gets to LA. The folk in New Mexico may appreciate the new moister weather's effect on crop yields. Too bad about LA. Pond scum is solar power. State size areas are needed to collect that energy and convert it to a useful form. Does anyone think that is going to pass muster with the Greenies when they actually want to build a producing plant, as opposed to promises and dreams? I think Crusty is dead right on Iran & Israel. I just have to wonder.... it's been over a decade since Iran was "5 years away" from The Bomb. Am I the only one that does the math? Don't forget we've all been dead since 1998 according to Ted Danson's 1988 "predictions". |

"also an unbroken string of record quarterly profits for the oil companies." You've been lied to, probably to advance an agenda. All major US oil companies nearly went under in 1999-2000. Oil was $20 a barrel, a product of the Clinton recession/.com bubble. The only companies staying afloat were getting it out of the ground for $3 a barrel, and none of those were US oil companies. The Saudis were still doing fine. Why aren't you outraged that Apple makes as much money as it does? And they use child labor in third world countries to manufacture their products. (I know, they claim they are unaware.) Oil companies pay high wages to hundreds of thousands of people directly, and millions indirectly. They are major employers. Their profits get reinvested in future fields, as well as distributed to shareholders. It might be fun to vilify their success, but it certainly isn't fair. We need more successful companies, not fewer. Profit means they are well run. Unlike the watermelon types who would rather use tax dollars to fund failing businesses up until the point that the executives take the money and run, have a federal investigation, and then claim they can't trace the money, I would rather see business make it without feeding at the trough. Oil companies do just that, and they do it well. |

"it's been over a decade since Iran was "5 years away" from The Bomb" Left alone, 5 years was probably the right number. But when plants are sabotaged and scientists murdered, it tends to set programs back a bit. I hope they're 5 years from the bomb for quite a long time. |

I remember well the mid-1980's. Just married and layed off from SEDCO (now the infamous TransOcean after a couple merger and acquisition deals) as the price of oil had plummeted and the rigs were being moth-balled in Galveston harbor. I was just a student employee, an engineer trainee of sorts, but that sure brought some challenging times. |
