He finally got me to buy a bow from him! stopped by his shop on the way back home from dubuque monday for a visit and "possiable" purchase

PSE Brute X

i havent messed with a bow since i was a kid, and then it was an old hand me down recurve.

picked up half a dozen arrows and have only slung 3 rounds of 6 through it. but my my aim with it is alot better then i expected.

second round at 20 yards.

a lil low and to the right, but not a BAD grouping. i figure i can only get better with practice : )

been wanting to pick one up for the last couple years since i started deer hunting again. i like the challenge of the hunt. anyone can pick off a deer at close range with a gun, so i always made a point of ;etting the easy ones pass and going after the ones that ment i had to be very accurate at range.

im looking forward to the challenge of using a bow this season.

Interesting, I have been looking at bows for a couple of years. I even went to a local shop last weekend. Same here with the recurve. Nice consistent misses. Adjust your sight.

You are going to be hooked on bowhunting, I can tell!
Thanks for the biz!

I know nothing about bows.

I know a lot about DaveS.

I know a lot about Boolean logic . . .

Therefore . . .

I know you got a great bow.

I know it was/will be set up perfectly.

I know you got a fair price.

I know you will never have a problem without someone standing right next to you ready, willing and able to resolve it.

That was simple.

The best things are.

DAVE should be a EBR DEALER
Dave was dads only parts guy when Dave was in a Buell dealership.

Dave could be the Dealer trainer for EBR

We can see now buy a 1190s with all the toys and get a bow and five lessons Get a fly ride and hunt 1190s delivery

Dave S, on the subject of bows, where can I get a string for a 60" recurve?

Bud
The Brute X has an IBO speed of 320 FPS.
Not a speed bow but no slouch!
Modern compound bows range from about 315-366 fps. Very few run hotter than 340.
Of course that is IBO speed, 70 lb pull, 30" draw, 350 gr arrow. Individual speeds will vary depending on set up and arrow weight. For most hunting setups deduct about 30-40 fps from IBO speed.

Court,
Yes, it is that simple! Geesh if it was hard I'd never figure it out. I'm just a small town kid from Iowa!

Ken,
That would be awesome! We will have to wait and see what Erik and crew build that the general riding public can afford and would buy. I would love to be back in the bike business too. At this point it appears EBR is going into established, high profile dealerships which is probably a good move on their part. To make it work for me I would need bikes I could sell in the 10-15,000.00 range and have a steady supply of them!

Nice consistent misses. Adjust your sight.

as i was saying, new bow, new shooter, and only 12 shots in. before i mess with the sights to much i need to sling alot more arrows through it and make sure its the sights being a hair off and not me!

if i keep consistently shooting low and to the right i will definitely start adjusting the sight.

and i just realized yesterday how long of a stretch bow season is : ) thats a heck of alot more options then the one free day i usually have to sneak off into the timber during second season shot gun!

Dave... Are there any good hand cross bows? Not the cheap $20 ones but a good compound pistol cross bow.

Tim, Rattling your cage. That is impressive for the twelth shot. I hope I'm close to that. If Dave goes into the fly, buy, shoot, ride program, I may try making carbon fiber bow racks for the 1190.

i kind of figured, but you are also correct! it still leaves plenty of improvement.

now i just have to figure out something to shoot at for target practice. yes i can go for paper targets, but what the heck am i going to hang them from?

Dave has(besides the 3d targets) some big styrofoam blocks to mount the targets on and stop the arrows while not damaging them. i have acces to a fair amount of 2+ inch thick sheets of styrofoam that i can sandwich together, but im not sure they are of the right consistency to do much more then crumble after a couple shots.

Try shooting straw bales.
I dunno how it is with one of those fancy bows but a good old fashioned "longbow" would not penetrate a tightly packed straw bale @ 25 yards when I was a kid!

Beat me to it Chris. We used bales too.

I'm off to the UK tomorrow to help clear out my dad's garage & loft as he's moved into a flat.

Goodness knows what we'll find, but somewhere in there is a 40 year old longbow.

If I find it I'll take some pics, for all you toxophilists.

Fuzz, I have a guy that makes recurve strings for me. Only 19.00 TYD

M1
No, there is not any good hand held crossbows, they are toys.
Now, real crossbows, wow, tons of nice ones out there. I do mostly Ten Point, Excaliber and Barnett

Straw bales will not stop Tim's arrows. They work ok for recurve shooting but a modern compound will blow right thru them.

Grumpy,
Careful with the 40 year old longbow. It might be fine and it might snap in half the first time you draw it. Wear your full face helmet!

Like Daves says the arrows will go right through hay bales and ruin your fletches.
You need a foam block, they stop the arrows and the arrows are easy to remove.

Good shooting for a noob!

its going good! thanks for asking dave : ) picked up a foam block target and have been practicing at 20-30-40

first time out i made the mistake of shooting at 20 for awhile, then 30 for awhile then 40... by the time i got to 40 my arm was tired lol. i should have gone about it the other way. closer as i get worn out!

i broke the tip off of one arrow when i was shooting at the 40 near the end. it glanced off my target and hit the 5 ft tall dirt pile behind it. took about an inch off the front of the arrow. funny thing is, i shot it once just for shits and giggles and i can still hit the target. it does alot more damage though with that shredded cavity for a leading edge!

ive been looking into some of the slings they make to carry it in the field. any recommendations?

DO NOT SHOOT DAMAGED ARROWS!!!!!!!!!!!
It is now too light total weight for your bow and could do severe damage.
It could also fly apart and damage you.

Glad you are getting along good though!
You should come up to one of the 3D shoots our club puts on in the summer.

Ya I figured I shouldn't before I did, and did consider the arrow flying apart...

Hmm, I suppose if I make a bow mount for the bike I could head that way... lol
