question for you...

we had new vinyl flooring put in our kitchen(second time, first time it stained for some weird reason and was replaced under the 20 year warranty just this week)

anyway, now my new floor got a big dent put in it from the guy moving in the fridge to soon(right after they put down the floor, without a cart.... then he cut the floor where the black meets the white to pull it up a bit and try to fix it... obviously isnt going to work and now leaves me a big cut right in the highest traffic area in the house.

so heres what im thinking. yes i can have them put a whole new sheet in the kitchen(it has no seams, just one big sheet)

or i thought about cutting the flooring from the edge of the wall that you see in the top right corner, straight across to the other wall on the left. to the left just outside of the edge of the pic is the main door we use to get in and out of the house, to the right of the pic is the basement door, and the doorway im standing in in the pic is the living room. basically making that spot like a little entry/landing area.

what i want to do once i cut that vinyl out is to put down a sheet of diamond plate aluminum. but to keep it from being a pain to clean, and to keep it from getting scratched up, i would like to put a think clear epoxy or something over it to make a level surface.

i know some friends just refinished a counter top and the final coat is a thick clear epoxy that is meant to withstand knives and scratches so i would think it would work as a durable coating for the diamond plate. but there stuff is a high gloss finish and i was thinking id more want a dull satin or something so it matched the vinyl better...

im not sure any of what i said makes sense, but was wondering if any of you guys had any brilliant ideas as to what would work.

Tim,I would have them replace it. If it had no seams I wouldn't settle for less.

It's going to be better off with no seams

yes, if we fix the vinyl i wont let them seam it, the whole thing would be replaced. if we stick with a whole vinyl floor no seams is the only option i will go for.

but i was more wondering about options as far as putting a piece of diamond plate as a piece of floor and leveling the surface with a clear epoxy or something so that it would be smooth but you could see the diamond plate.

obviously then i would need a low profile trim piece to basically section that area off as a separate floor.

If it were me, I'd try masking around the diamond plate area with 2" green auto body masking tape and pouring the epoxy really carefully. The epoxy should bond with what's around it and then it would flush with the surrounding flooring.

You can have the epoxy finished any way you like just depends on the polishing & how hard it is.

My dad used to be in the epoxy business & did bar tops for pubs on the side, usually clear with a themed base, coins, drink mats, currency bills, etc.

Ceramic tile. Epoxy will get all scratched up and will yellow over time.
