Eve Arnold, one of the truly great photojournalists of the last 50 years, has passed away. Lots of info and many photos online as a result. Here are few the NY Times posted.
Gaff Topsails, Newfoundland - The highest point of the old Newfoundland Railway. Its the center of the island only accessible by off road vehicle or URAL.
Great pictures Bill! So you've added a Ural to the stable? Very cool! The Island is on my list of places to go again; Heather's twisting my arm into going out west this summer , but maybe next year. It's been 8 years since I've been there- crazy!
Maybe the next trip we'll spend more time riding than partying- can't say that for my first time there!
Back in the 80s the Newfoundland Government along with the Canadian Government pulled the trains from the Island. We had a Narrow Gauge Train System which was totally incompatible with the rest of Canada and the United States. I remember when I was really young that when the train cars arrived in Port Aux Basques they would actually switch the wheels on them. The old rail cars were abandoned on the side of the track and people over the years claimed them as cabins. You can cross this whole island off road by ATV, Dual Sport or Snow Mobile. I've ridden most of the trail and its a great ride.
Alex, Tell your sweet wife to say the hell with going west, come to the end of the world where the Humpback Whales and Ice Bergs are. You've been here before and know its beauty. I have a Summer House thats yours if you want. The Ural is AWESOME.
Glitch, Good to be around again. I've been offline for a bit but maybe time to visit.
Slowride, The black bike is Honda's Adventure Touring Bike. Its a 2008 Honda XL1000V Varadero which is not available in the United States. Shame really because it blows away any bike I've ever had. I love my Buell S1 and S3T but this Varadero is so damm comfortable. Two weeks after buying it in 2010 I was in Southern Labrador crossing the Trans Labrador Highway which is about 1500km of dirt highway. Then you have to run from Labrador down through Northern Quebec which is another 400km of dirt and some of the twistiest paved roads you will ever see. Its a hidden gem. From Baie Comeau, Quebec to a place called Manic 5, Quebec the road is crazy twisty. Manic 5 is the second largest buttressed hydro electric dam in the world. If you look at a map of Quebec its the circle body of water with the big island in the middle.
A few videos of one of my favorite trails here near the city.
Last year during Hurricane Igor one of the bridges was washed out and never replaced.
The camera is a GoPro HDHero and the offroad bike is a 2005 Honda XR650R which has been made Street Legal. We can practically make any off road bike street legal up here.
..dave...i do miss seeing "hack" races(remember seeing several up at "Sears Point" years ago: way fun to watch) and i had a friend in high school(late 60's) who had a Rickmann Triump(with the Baby Blue body parts) tricked out.Another friend, years later, had an ex dirt track Triump(with a Trackmaster frame)that he street legal'd.Both were way,way cool(loved the "sound" with the aftermarket exhausts).Great pics, by the way.Lt
I finally got a passport last year so I can legally cross the border now (or at least come back).
I'm in a quandry since my daughter wants me to go to China with her in April. I want to go there some day but I'm not quite ready (my Mandarin is a little weak yet).
Like usuall though, I would want to ride the whole way and my wife would want to fly. I guess she can do that & I'll have fun.
I guess this is a pic thread, so here's one from the '10 Homecoming.
