What about whole "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." Exodus 20:23 Exodus 34:14 Deuteronomy 5 Deuteronomy 6:14 Isaiah 42:8 ...etc What other parts of the bible can be ignored, added to, or changed before it is entirely different?
Does just mentioning Jesus in your religion make you a Christian? (Koran, 25 times)
I am starting to think that the term "Christian" is political description rather than a definition of beliefs.
Why are you suddenly interested in Mormonism? Why are you taking time to post now when you could have done so any time in the past?
Political, indeed.
Get ready for President Zero to flood his fawning media with anti-Mormonism when his connections to Reverand Wright went largely ignored by the Tinglers.
PS: Read "Under the Banner of Heaven" if you want to freak out about Mormonism. I could care less that the next President of the United States is a Mormon.
Christianity is going to look quite different in the next 5-10 years particularly in black churches as progressive political groups infiltrate and take advantage of poor and uneducated minorities...just like they already do but if they dont start reworking beliefs in black churches than someone will come along and remove their masks and show them for who they really are.
If he believes he is above the law, that blacks are the decendants of evil, that homosexuality is a sin, that women deserve to be treated like property and used as breeding machines, and that underaged girls need to be raped on a regular basis, that welfare fruad is viable way of life, or that divine prophecy is the reason to cut up people into little bits and pieces... well then I have an issue with that.
Christianity is a very broad term. There is a lot of difference between a Roman Catholic and an Evangelical. The Mormons, the Jehovah's Witnesses, Roman Catholics, all the various Christian sects int he middle east easily fall under the definition of Christian in my book. Some folks may exclude them.
I only watched about half of the video. If you want to know what the Mormons believe, I have doubts that you will find an accurate representation of it in an anti-Mormon video. Many atheists right here on BadWeb misrepresent Christianity in some pretty distorted ways too. Listening to that won't educate you on Christianity though.
Personally I really don't have a problem with a Candidates faith unless he is pushing an agenda based on that faith. The strongest example of this I've seen in my lifetime is without a doubt BO. He has even pushed policy using the term "Collective Salvation" of the nation. If you want to be concerned about who is pushing their religious ideals with legislation, that seems to be the place to look. Just sayin'.
There are probably as many forms of Mormonism as there as there are religions in the world.
They are known for "splinter" groups as the founder set up the "prophecy directly from god himself" scenario. It has spawned all sorts of bizarre cults from the Jeffs to the Laffertys. It is probably one of the most despicable mis-uses of power I have seen in our country.
I consider brainwashing cult leaders that justify their pedophelia by prophesy to be one of the lowest life forms on this planet.
However, I have no problem with a candidate of any religion, as long as they truly understand and apply the separation of church and state... which seems to be a stretch for some!
I am not particularly religious so there are more qualified people to debate this. Thanks for admitting that the timeliness of this topic is partially politically motivated as this is going to be jammed down our throats until Zero is ousted in November.
Again, read "Under the Banner of Heaven" by Krakauer which is mostly about the murder of a Mormon and her child by zealots. Most of the book is structured as a history of Mormonism and it doesn't paint a pretty picture. Mormonism was started by a science fiction writer and charlatan just like Scientology under L. Ron Hubbard.
I guess if one believes that Jesus is the Savior, then one is a Christian. No matter what derivative wackiness dogmas proclaim.
Most Mormons are good, upstanding, conservative people who love America. That is good enough for me.
Krakaur does a stellar job in "Under the Banner of Heaven".
I also do not have a problem with a candidate, as long as he does not believe that the angel Moroni is evil trying to occupy his anal cavity, and hence he shows up to court with a sing on his arse that reads..."Do Not Enter".
Again, you have to read the book to get that... but I think it is a valid point.
not a big fan of any religion, what ever you have to call it. However, there are an incredible amount of Mormons in the Intell fields, especially the Army Linguist Intell fields.... Some of the hardest working, diligent and eager linquists I have ever worked with. I would not hesitate to work with any of them again, at a moments notice.
Hey, Union, I would suggest starting with the Wikipedia entry on Mormonism instead of that cartoon. (South Park did a better job of depicting Mormons, even when they were trying to make fun of them...) I tend to go by the axiom "To know one, ask one." Ask questions. Lots of them. Understand their answers. Then ask yourself how it is different from what you may believe or have been taught.
If someone is thinking that some of the ordinances and rules of living are strange, consider some of the other Commandments in the Old Testament, or some of the ritual in the Catholic or Orthodox churches.
I do think it was ironic that back in 2008, of all of the candidates competing for the GOP nomination, the Mormon was the only one married once!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching Ken Jennings on Jeopardy... hated watching him and the other grand champion getting spanked by Watson...
Morally and practically, I'd appreciate a Mormon over any of the other GOP flavors so far, except Ron Paul- he may have flaws, but over the years he's been the most consistent, and definitely appeals to the proper demographic (youngun's) going forward.
Interestingly, I heard a news piece about US intelligence organizations heavily recruiting from Mormons- a tenet of their faith requires them to do missionary work overseas for at least a year, they are shoo-ins to get high security clearances, etc.
Humorous aside, true story: Late one spring, a couple of years ago, the GF and I were picking cherries from my trees- two Mormon kids walked onto the property and approached us... I knew what was coming, started to get aggravated, but flipped that switch in my brain to humor... "disarmed" them by saying "Jesus is just allright with me, and her", then drew them in to helping us pick cherries... innocently wasted some of their time, sent them on their way with some frozen cherries from the previous year... laughed as we watched them walk through the neighborhood eating cherries...
Good kids, good memory!
(OK, back to the previously scheduled discussion...)
The only thing that stands out in this thread to me is the statement that Romney was the only married guy in the GOP primary campaign of 2008. How's that?
"South Park did a better job of depicting Mormons, even when they were trying to make fun of them"
Except for the twist at the end.
Gary: Listen, I just wanted to let you know you don't have to worry about me tryin' to be your friend anymore.
Stan: I don't?
Gary: Look, maybe us Mormons do believe in crazy stories that make absolutely no sense, and maybe Joseph Smith did make it all up, but I have a great life. and a great family, and I have the Book of Mormon to thank for that. The truth is, I don't care if Joseph Smith made it all up, because what the church teaches now is loving your family, being nice and helping people. And even though people in this town might think that's stupid, I still choose to believe in it. All I ever did was try to be your friend, Stan, but you're so high and mighty you couldn't look past my religion and just be my friend back. You've got a lot of growing up to do, buddy. Suck my balls. [turns around and walks off. All four boys just look at him in wonder, even Cartman.]
Cartman: Damn, that kid is cool, huh?
That's kind of the way I feel about Mormanism too.
I'd rather have a mechanical breakdown in a neighborhood with a Mormon church than in one where they espouse black liberation theology. Mormons may be a little whacky but by and large are very nice. I always enjoy myself in Utah.
From Cheers episode: Rebecca: "Flowers! I wish more men would send flowers." Woody: "I knew they couldn't dance by why can't they send flowers?"
Education is good. I think you chose an interesting albeit partial source. If you are really interested in what Romney or other modern day Mormons actually believe, then go find and read the actual published doctrine of their church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and let us know what it is all about.
That may be trick advice.
I used to play basketball with Mormons, actually played for their team.
All the Mormons I know accept the Christian doctrine of the triune god; father, son, and holy spirit.
The short of it is that the modern Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is entirely changed from Mormonism of old. What was a cult has been transformed into a Christian denomination. Interestingly they never published an official church doctrine and so were able to successfully transform into a Christian denomination. Their "church" history is interesting, but is not very informative concerning what Mormons believe today. For that the best source of information would be their own statements:
As far as mere Christianity (see C.S. Lewis' book by that title) goes, they seem to get it, thus they indeed are Christians. I'm sure Romney will answer questions about his faith quite openly if he is like every other Mormon I've known.
>>> Does just mentioning Jesus in your religion make you a Christian?
What do you think? The term "Christ" is not a name, it is a title from biblical prophesy meaning "messiah" which is to say "savior." Thus if one does not hold that Jesus is the "Christ" (the savior of man), then they are in no way "Christ"ian.
Muslims certainly never claim to be Christian.
>>> I am starting to think that the term "Christian" is political description rather than a definition of beliefs.
From your post of the youtube video and your disingenuous questioning, it's clear your intent is not genuine, not really seeking honest knowledge, but this thread serves to educate folks, so it's a good one; it's just not going according to your agenda I think. I could be wrong.
Fighting for religion is an oxymoron. Not sure that's entirely correct. By long tradition, ( crappy tradition, true ) Men have use religion to gain power and wealth. Men have insisted that their religion is the one and only true one. Men have claimed Holy Purpose in the destruction of their enemies. ( after all, if you win, were not the Gods on your side? )
Most importantly, for over a Century, long after the Dark ages after the fall of Rome, the primary antagonist against freedom and America has been a religion that has murdered hundreds of millions of it's own people, not counting the additional hundreds of millions killed in wars of Conquest. If you don't know who I'm talking about, perhaps learning about actual history would help. ( the numbers in this article are woefully short of reality. I suspect Mao's actual death toll approaches a billion. ) http://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/MEGA.HTM
That anti-Mormon video above is propaganda drek. Not even good Propaganda.
Yeah, the South Park guys did a great play. Their episode on the Church Of Scientology was hilarious. True too. ( made it even funnier. ) "America, **** yeah! Coming again to save the ......"
If you're looking for consistency in Christianity then good luck. We live in a country where you can take one law in Leviticus and ignore all the rest. You can condemn homosexuals as sinners, and plant two crops in the same field, wear clothing made of two different fibers, eat shrimp and lobster.
I really have no agenda, and usually pay very little attention to religion. I am truly confused.
I just don't understand how Mormonism can be classified as Christian. They study entirely different holy books, believe in different prophets, and get into heaven differently than all of the other Christian denominations.
I am not saying that Mormons are bad...just different. What other Christian denominations use holy books other than the Bible?
Chistianity, Christ followers, Mormons, Jews, Muslims... love 'em all and let God sort it out.
If you read the last book of the Chronicles of Narnia series, there is a thoughtful metaphor that covers this complicated issue.
quote:
"Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?'"
"Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'"
Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.
But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand
The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."
So even then, Jesus' teaching was crystal clear. Its not about declared affiliation, it's about what you believe and is in your heart (which is likely manifest by your actions, but its not your actions being judged... they are just an indicator you ought to be aware of to keep yourself from lying to yourself).
Further, there was a great note I just read in the new John Eldredge book (beautiful Outlaw, now out for the kindle) that touched on the other part of this... I'm reading it on the Kindle, so its at "43%". I don't know what page it's on.
Remember the passage about the young ruler that approached Jesus? Rich kid, but a rich kid that loved God and followed his laws. He asked what was necessary to enter the kingdom of heaven. Jesus gave the boilerplate Jewish answer, but when pressed by the guy to really go deep, Jesus did, and told him the one thing in his life that was still standing between him and God... his wealth. This wasn't a generic indictment of wealth (if it was, it would have been in the boilerplate answer). Instead, it was a personal and loving teaching moment for the guy on how to achieve true greatness. How to make his next spiritual breakthrough.
The guy crashed and burned, like I generally do when God tells me the next thing to do. But Jesus didn't just let him wither... as he was walking away, Jesus said (problably deliberately so this guy could hear it)...
quote:
Children!, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.
That was the "oh &%^%, we are screwed" moment for the discples and the crowd, and the poor guy walking away. But Jesus didn't stop there. The disciples asked "who then can be saved?".
Jesus gave one of the most hopeful answers in the Bible...
quote:
"With man, this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God"
Which means, for those not properly "churched", that God can save my sorry ass, your sorry ass, and everyone eases sorry ass.
A LOT of religions have twisted the bible to their own advantage. Focusing entirely too much on a few select easy things and simply ignoring the rest. Which is why I hate being a member of a church. The only reason I am right now was to appease my parents. I know that's not right but I'm not perfect
