 This is what I have to work with. It looks like the cast iron goes into tile in my foundation... We would like to add a basement toilet and a utility sink. The utility sink is easy as there is a floor drain to the left. There are existing hot and cold water pipes. I don't see an easy way to add the toilet. It would seem like I need to do an upflush toilet/macerating base or a raised platform... Anyone with experience in this stuff? | ||

Bust a hole in the floor and install a sump with the macerator pump in the sump. This way you will avoid the raised base or having to raise the floor. You can place the sump outside of the bathroom area and bust open the floor to wherever you want to place the toilet. Of course the sink/tub/shower can all go into the sump. Don't be afraid to break up the floor, it's easily done. I did mine with just a small sledge hammer. Backfill with some gravel and pour cement to just below floor level. Finish off with some floor leveling compound. | ||

Get yourself a Stihl 14" diamond blade gas saw, wet cut the concrete, tie into the other drain and mount the flange for the toilet to bolt to, pour some new concrete, and WALLAH! Got a new throne. It's not as hard as it sounds (if you've done it before). If I was closer, I have the saw with the diamond blade. If you don't want to cut the floor, then one of the units that Kenm123t said. | ||

They make toilets with built in macerator pumps. Doesn't even have to be a 4" drain. On the other hand, raising the toilet a foot on a platform isn't so horrible either. If you do it right, you could indeed have a throne in your basement. | ||

A thought - If you want to sell the house at some point, whatever you do should be done per Code (and inspected). Or if there is ever a water damage related claim against your insurance (that in some way can be attributed to your DIY plumbing job), they might deny if you coverage. May want to get a local plumber or contractor buddy to take a look and tell you what your best options are. Not hatin' on any of the other posters, but interweb advice is just that....just sayin' | ||

Unscrew the cleanout plug and see how far down the pipe goes to determine if there is enough pitch to your toilet location so you dont have to use a pump. (the closer the better) Also don't forget the vent stack. And yes, check code and zoning and health dept. | ||

There are also models that have an input for a sink drain. It doesn't look like you need one of those though. | ||

I'll be checking with the city soon. I was joking with the wife about the 'throne' as it would be a spare bathroom, with just a wash basin/laundry sink. I've been reading the code and can't make sense of it... (Message edited by Thumper74 on January 09, 2012) |
