Is any one on the board very familiar with 50s and 60s GP racing? |

I honestly didn't care much for it until the Grand Prix Legends simulator came out in the late 90's. Became enthralled with the elegance of the minimalistic cars and the guys who crawled into 'em - ready to die, essentially. Sometimes I feel like they were more like fighter pilots with the lack of safety and high mortality rates back then. -Saro |

Hey, didn't James Garner race at Monaco in 1966? Seriously, that movie showed what was great about road racing back then. |

Well, I was alive then, and a keen enthusiast. However, it was before the Speed Channel, and so forth, so one was rather removed from the action. I should be happy to contribute what I ever I might. |

My wife's cousin races old British Formula Something-Or-Other cars. He knows a ton of people who race almost anything old. |

I saw Giacomo Agostini & Barry Sheene riding round the Montlhery track in 2001. but that's more '70s I think. |

I share an office with Horst Kwech. I'll sit around now and then and have a good whiskey with him. He is an engineer in the building I have my shop in. |

Mike Hailwood and the RC-166 Honda (6 cylinder 350cc for those not in the know). The sound of that motor at 18,000 rpm is absolutely indescribable. |

Oh, THAT. Sure, I have a certain familiarity with it. In fact, I was almost a participant. I entered the 1964 US GP at Daytona on my Manx Norton, but it seized in practice. Even though Geoff Duke, who was there as a spectator, showed me how to get the head and cylinder off without removing the engine, I couldn't get it fixed in time for the race. GP fields at the time typically had lots of Norton mounted privateers. Hailwood was there, and set a worlds record for the hour run at about 144 miles per hour, if I recall correctly. Here is my F1 license from the time.
Some may find it hard to credit, but I am still riding, and still enjoying it. |
