Hey all you BW kids at heart- had a talk with my sis yesterday evening about her cat, who's having a little trouble maintaining the backyard "territory" so to speak- I'm looking to send her a late xmas/early Bday present.

Who's got experience with these type of water guns? I'm looking for the ones with the longest range and least exertion needed... spent some time trying to research them online, but I figured I might as well ask youn's too.

I'm guessing she's had her cat long enough to train him to do right indoors- a regular squirt bottle should do if not- but do tell if there are good models for indoor too. Now that I think about it, I wonder if one could modulate the volume/pressure for both indoor and outdoor? (That's probably asking too much, plus knowing sis, I'd hate to hear about firing it indoors mistakenly with an outdoor setting on...)

Thanks!

No- let me clarify.

Her cat is indoor/outdoor, and she has a not too big fenced in backyard. Christmas morning, cat wakes her up WAY early, begs to go outside. She goes back to bed- as soon as she gets back asleep, hears cats hollering- she runs out back to look, sees her cat and a big black cat about to rumble. Judging by both cat's size (big), she assumes potential big injuries (from past experience).

I'd just like to "arm" her with the proper high volume, long range water cannon to deal with this. The issue isn't really HER cat, but "intruder" cats.

Disclaimer: I'm not really a "cat person"... like them OK, lived with them, but don't know them like dogs, for instance.

If Sis got a dog, it would learn to live with her cat and act as a decent deterrent for any OTHER cat that wandered into the yard.

Just sayin'...

True, Jaime- she lives alone and travels a lot, so that precludes a dog...

Lemon juice is much more humane than ammonia. You can do real damage with cleaning chemicals - lemon on the fur to a cat is as bad as skunk on your clothes is to you. If you live near a zoo you could try and score some lion urine: mark the perimeter of the territory with that and see what happens.

You're not gonig to stop another cat from coming in the yard. You may think that by making a deterrent, you're making the simplest a -> b line in the cats mind and it will learn to not come in the yard.

In reality, all she's going to teach the other cat is not go in the yard when she's there and to run when she comes out of the door.

You would need to make the yard itself unappealing to the other cat, but of course that likely means making it unappealing to her own cat.

Also keep in mind that not all owners do the squirt bottle thing. I don't, and our new kitten will actually get in the shower with the water running.

I know it's too late because she's already an outside animal, but I've owned both and outside cats are a PITA. I know that some claim they're happier, but... they get in fights and leave dead crap on your door mat nearly daily. Worst of all, all of your neighbors will hate you as they leave turds in their yard and look in their windows while they're trying to sleep (or not sleep).

Growing up the adult neighbor added a valve stem to his super soaker so he could get pressure the lazy/ quick way and get us as we rode our bikes by during the summer.

After a few years, i don't think there was anything stock left on that thing.

I'm fully aware that cats are smart- it just boils down to having some fun at the intruder cat's expense. Not to harm the cat at all, although I'd never heard about lemon juice and cats...

Not looking to deconstruct the whole thing, just to get sis a good water cannon. In her younger days she used to shoot a .22, so I'm hoping she's still got the deadeye with a water gun.

I agree with the indoor/outdoor thing- too many bad things can go wrong with an outdoor cat. It is what it is. She's pretty well attached to the cat, and it wasn't too long ago that she had to do a vet visit when her cat had a bad battle outcome.

So- what's the best water cannon?

Yeah, that describes me too. I had a dog and I felt bad that my new job kept me out of the house and away for so long. When she passed away (she was an old dog to begin with) I went with a cat because they're so much "lower maintenance."

When my girlfriend moved in with me, she was DEFINITELY a "Dog Person" (she's an AKC Judge), but after living with my previous kitty for 18 years she's pretty much decided as much as she loves dogs, cats are SO much easier. We recently adopted "Harry" from a local shelter and the three of us couldn't be happier. Harry is going to be an "Indoor Cat" whether he likes it or not. He's bolted out the door on a couple of occasions but never went far (a few feet, then he'd throw himself to the ground to roll around). We don't want him getting used to going outside. Too many bad things happen to outdoor cats.

..when you decide on which water gun to arm her with...we use to use old carb jets on the end.Man what a world of difference that would make on distance and stream...."you'll shoot your eye out"so no face shoots during skirmishes..def got more distance out of those guns though.LT

"Growing up the adult neighbor added a valve stem to his super soaker...."

That is related to my method of non-lethal pest corrections:

I found an old-fashioned fire extinguisher that uses water and compressed air.
It will shoot a solid stream about 50 feet when compressed to 100 pounds.

It's also great for knocking down hornets nests, and once, for a neighborhood brat that wouldn't leave me alone with a squirt gun when I was in a cast.
(he looked like we jumped in a pool with his clothes on by the time he was out of range)

+1 on the old fire extinguisher.

So simple, unscrew valve system from pressure vessel, half fill with water, refit valve, pressurize from compressor, you're good to go.
A little unwieldy maybe, but there's no substitute for sheer fire-power.

Compressed air & water, what a fun combination.

I'll have to "Do a Court" remind me to tell you sometime about my apprentice days.

My wife uses these for covert ops off our third floor deck to deal with overly rowdy bar patrons down on the street level. : )

Not sure if she is into a given brand.

I had a cat problem once. Benjamin Sheridan 22cal pellet gun, bushnell 4x9 scope with duplex reticle, and custom "hollow point" pellets. Put some food out, and wait on the roof of the house. Much like waiting in a tree stand. Damn, I should have been a sniper. Not a cat person, I felt no remorse.
