I went on a Toy Ride yesterday to benefit a local childrens hospital (Brenners Childrens Hospital at Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem, NC), it was put on by a local HD dealership
It was my first toy ride I've ever done, and it was nice to help out some sick kids.
Anyway, I was delighted to see that the local (Guilford Co) police department have a Buell police Uly. It was the only Buell there besides my 1125R.

Hybrid - I went on a local poker run this past summer. The only other Buell there besides mine was, you guessed it, a Uly ridden by the Park City Police Dept.

stirz - i got excited, i saw a red CR, but when I went to look at it I noticed it wasnt plated, was one of the bikes the dealer had for sale.

In total there were just two buells (mine and the cops), about a dozen sportbikes total (come on sportbike guys do something for someone else), and then the rest (another 400 or so) were various cruisers, bimmers/hds/goldwings etc etc

it was nice doing something for the kids, but I doubt i'll do the ride again, i didnt enjoy the ride form the dealer to the hospital.
It was about 30 miles, almost entirely highway, and thats not the worst thing, but not my favorite.
The worst part were some of the people there in the ride.
Example - the two bikes in front of me were 'Nubian Queens' (going off of their patches on the jackets they were wearing). The one girl wanted to snap pictures while going down the road - hey, i've done the same before, I understand. But I've taken said pictures with my LEFT hand, not my right. So she'd let off of the throttle suddenly to snap a picture and then hammer back down to catch up to the ones in front of her. Sucks for the people behind, like myself, who dont know shes about to deccelerate suddenly from 75mph down to 50.
She also stalled the bike out on the highway. TWICE. I dont know how, but I could hear it go silent and then fire back up.

And just riding in a huge pack in general sucked big ole balls. If one slows down at the front then its a chain of people slowing down and eventually near the back you come to a complete stop waiting on it all. Just not my cup of tea.

Glad you made it through Hybrid...

I gave up on those ginormous group rides when I saw how the conglomeration worked, and didn't...

GREAT cause, but I much prefer the before and after parts of the event. Won't do the rides no more.

You should hit the one up that starts in Asheboro! Usually a site to see but I stay away from the middle of the pack..

about a dozen sportbikes total (come on sportbike guys do something for someone else)

You say this, and then you go on to describe that the ride was a standard charlie foxtrot of a charity ride.

Ever consider that the sportbike riders are the ones smart enough to stay away from such a mess? : )

I've done a few of these charity rides. About once a year, I decide to give another one a shot. And almost universally, it sucks, and I skip them for another year.

Taking an 1125 on a "parade ride" is miserable. I've got a bike that wants to run fast, stuck at 10-15mph, getting hot, being very unhappy with me because I'm idling through corners that should be taken under power, but I can't, because the two women on the Harley in front of me are busy braking mid-corner so they can take pictures of their friend on the other Harley next to them. Or in front. Or behind. Really doesn't matter. Then there's the guy behind me who can't ride, but LOOOOVES his pipes. Man, he's gonna jam that throttle open and listen to that awesome sound and... oh, hey, I've just passed the silly jap crotch rocket, I should back off.... aww yeah, here we go, I can catch up again, listen to that roar.... oh hey, passed that guy again. Whoops.

etc.

Around here, it's common for a few of the parade rides a year to involve serious injuries or fatalities because people CANNOT RIDE IN A GROUP. They just go about crashing into each other, and then shut down highways because welp, they're living free & riding hard, not an ounce of gear on them, and lookey there, the highway causes head injuries!

I do NOT enjoy most charity rides, and I do not feel safe riding with the bulk of the riders in them.

A year or so ago, there was one where the police decided, "Ok, we're sick of people going down on the escorted rides. We'll only escort people with actual helmets." Awesome. Except the other (unescorted) group just rode like they were escorted anyway, blowing lights and generally being twats.

Show me a charity ride mostly filled by competent sportbike/sport touring bike riders, and I'll consider going.

As long as I go blind in the parking lot from the chrome, I'm not interested.

Hybrid - I got a chuckle from your reply. I had the same basic experience. Over 800 bikes, all H-D's with a handful of goldwings and no sportbikes. The typical sneerish attitude about my buell, which doesn't bother me a bit. (I have ridden H-D's for years, so I get it).

The number of 'real bikers' with relatively bad riding skills is par for the course on those type events, so I try to keep close to the front. I still managed to be behind a gal with a blinged-out dresser (sequins and leopard-skin paint) who kept veering to one side or the other while she was socializing on the highway.

I generally avoid the group rides, and that one reminded me of why.

Oh, I've not ever had any bad remarks about my Buell(s) from any HD rider. Other sportbike guys, well thats a different story.
