Just saw the news on mlb.com.

Albert Pujols is going to The Los Angeles California Angels of Anaheimville, or whatever they're calling themselves this year.

I can understand the decision but I'm not too chuffed about it.

He'll get more money, better weather & he can play dh when he's past fielding, but I still thought he was going to be one of those rare things, a one team player.

Bye bye Albert, we'll miss you.

It's just short of the Apocalypse here amongst the apoplectic. Yesterday a guard was placed at the Pujols statue outside his restaurant. One chap had his souvenir jersey hanging below his car door dragging on the pavement. Much wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth throughout the fans, calling in to radio talk shows to denounce the money grubbing new anti-Christ.

My tea leaves indicated last year he would depart after the season as soon as he became a free agent. Good move for him. Our immigration laws in Misery keep the hispanic population from exploding. Either Miami or LA, where the TV money is worth the expense of hiring the Albert.

Now, if the Cards buy some decent pitching . . . .

With the size of that contract, I think we should look at costs of formerly "expensive" items in terms of "Ballplayer Units"

A few 2011 Defense budget items:

Aegis class destroyer 2011 expenses: 9 ballplayer units

Predator and Reaper unmanned aerial systems: 6 ballplayer units

The TOTAL US Coast Guard budget: 33 Ballplayer units

Total 2010 budget of the American Red Cross: 10 Ballplayer Units

And the total forecast cost of the largest Defense aquisition in world history - F35 at half a ballplayer unit each (times 2400 units) is a 1200 ballplayer program over its life.

HOWEVER the GM bailout was almost 150 Ballplayer units

(this gets kind of fun)

So what in God's name does his signing with LA have to do with immigration? That is a completely bizzare statement. I don't understand. It is about money.

I thought this would happen, because the Cards could not afford to put all their "eggs in one basket" so to speak by signing Pujoles for 30 Million a year, which is what some experts predicted it would take.

At least he didn't pull a Brett Favre and play out all the drama over a long period of time and lose respect.

I think he will do well. Nothing will capture the magic of the 2011 team, though. I am sure Molina is heart broken. But it is just as sad to lose TL to retirement.

But what a way to go !!! Fans need to understand it is the nature of the game and to HTFU! I wish him the best.

haha thats funny.... and not...

I had a thought the other day, All this socialism, Marxism, OWS crap which I do not claim to know about but from what I understand about it... should applied to all Entertainment careers and political careers ie: actors, pro athletes, congress etc. and also to the internet and it's usage. Thats all. Occupy that.

Dang, Slaughter... that's pretty depressing!

Growing up, I had allergies and asthma bad enough that I never got into "sticks and balls", although in junior high I'm pretty sure the FB coach wanted me for my sprinting ability... got into everything 2-wheeled and speed skating in my teens. Had there been home nebulizers back then, I might've gone a different way...

I do enjoy a good baseball or football game, but it IS truly amazing what kind of $$$ in involved.

I agree it is obscene how much athletes, singers and actors make.

The guy has skills that are almost super human. And he is a good person, although a bit of a Jesus freak. He puts his money to good use with the Pujols Family Foundation and getting medical care to some of the most impoverished in the Dominican.

The guy isn't putting it in his arm or up his nose, as far as I can tell. He is humble too, as you can see him praying thanks to God or Jesus or whatever after almost every great play he pulls off.

All you can think of to say is something about immigration and ramble on about Marxism and OWS, which has absolutely nothing to do with the original post? Says a little more about your own character than his I would think. Just saying.

How to stir up crap on Badweb:

1. State anything.

2. Wait.

All seriousness aside, Miami and LA have large hispanic communities. The Albert has an intrinsic value by being in either city as a sports hero. That's worth something, including revenue to the team.

Albert's foundation holds a "thank you" formal dinner every year. He serves food, takes away plates, keeps water glasses filled. Humble servant, can't think of any other major sports star doing that.

His foundation will remain in St. Louis. New corporate sponsorship for it will be available in California. That's a good thing.

I like baseball, but I could care less if they all fell off the face of the planet at this point.

I'd rather watch a Little League game any day, the kids play the game for FUN not for $$.

I think they're all overpaid by far, far too much. It's not a case of the have's and have not's. It's just spiraled totally out of control. I would much rather see firefighters, policemen and military guys making even a percentage of what AP is raking in. I guess if they start firing live rounds at the players during the game, it might be worth watching. Maybe. $25 MILLION a YEAR? WTF were they thinking? Is ANYONE really worth that? To me, NO, so I don't bother watching "professional" sports anymore. Do I buy what they endorse? Nope. Will I? Probably not, unless it was something I'd planned on buying anyway and really needed.

People today are concentrating on $$ waaaaaay too much. Will you get to take all that with you when you die? Didn't think so.

There are many real athletes who have, and still are protecting our interests inside our borders and overseas who are far more deserving.

I know a person that played in the MLB and against the Cards when they had both McGuire and Pujols quite often. He was a pitcher and said McGuire was super nice to everybody but Pujols was an a-hole when the cameras weren't on. He also had his locker next to Bonds and said he was an ass as well except when kids were around. He loved kids. Take these observations as what they are, someone who played against or with these guys. Thats it.

Want to buy one of the popular World Series balls signed by every member of the winning team from the Cardinals win? You can't. Why not? Pujols wouldn't sign them because the $$$ wasn't high enough for him to sign.

For what it's worth, some of the products our company produces are for professional and non-professional sports licensees, including those of MLB. We love trades, especially big trades like this one. Initial orders on this player move are very large. I agree with Moxnix, going forward the sell through on this player combined with a Southern California team will be much higher. We have also seen a dramatic increase in orders for Miami due to the Reyes trade combined with the team uniform change. I mentioned this in a post during the World Series, unfortunately St. Louis as a brand is not as strong in the sports retail market as some of the other teams, including the Rangers. In my opinion, the Cardinals' championship cost MLB and its licensees a fair amount of money when compared to a Rangers win.

I would be an a** to opponents too if they paid me that much. At least Pujols didn't make the mistake of hitting a sausage mascot on purpose. Many of these players have no class. I think Pujols does. If he is acting he is pretty damn good at it.

As I said I understand the move, it makes sense, I'm just a trifle miffed that my team couldn't keep him.

I can't help wondering if LaRussa's departure influenced his decision, maybe if Tony was still there he'd have stayed for less money, who knows.

That said, he'll forever be known as "The former Cardinal slugger..."

On the positive side, Wainwright will be back next year, & Albert's fat salary will pay for a good number of other players.

With Matheny at the helm it should be an interesting season.

Pujols will be a good draw in LA, replacing Manny.

Good for him to go where he can get himself a good deal, and take care of himself, his family and those he helps. One could argue all day about the skewed values in the so-called civilized world, where entertainers and athletes are paid so much more than teachers, police, firemen, even doctors. But it's market-determined, so unless you want to go messing with free market capitalism, ......

Manny Ramirez had a much more elegant swing: classic. Although I can't argue with the results, Pujols stance is really odd.

Ah the friendly confines of Wrigley Field.

Even if you're not a Cubs fan it's still one of those "must visit" places if you're a baseball fan.

I made my pilgrimage in 2005.

I might drag the family over next year & do disney & some ballparks.

Anybody know where I can rent an RV cheap?

I've been there several times but I'm never going back. There are too many better major league ballparks with much better seating and sight lines to actually see a baseball game at! With just one visit to Miller Park in Milwaukee, you'll never want to go back to that dump on the north side of Chicago called Wrigley Field!

Look at the difference between old Comiskey Park and the newer White Sox stadium, U.S. Cellular Field. Been to a lot of games at both and while the new field is a great place to watch a ball game, Comiskey definitely had more "character." We always called it the biggest beer joint in Chicago.
