Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it he did the right thing when he found out what was going on by notifying the AD, but did wrong by not doing the righter thing by persuing it further.

wolfie evil is everywhere. Football etc should be banned from schools its a religion to the sports freaks few if any of the players actually get degrees if they do its in Coaching Its just a money maker for the schools. St Louis U is famous in the midwest for buying off raped students to protect the basketball teams.

Going to the athletic director is like the local bishops being talked to about the priests diddling of the boys. Just doesn't cut it.

Please, lets hear the whole story first. I don't in anyway condone this, however I can't believe he would turn a blind eye. He has always seemed to be above board.

I'm still trying to figure out how you see a kid and an old man having sex in a shower and describe it as " just horsing around "

Prison time. . . . .where child molesters get true justice.

The grad assistant who witnessed the rape didn't do anything to stop it either. How you leave after seeing that, I cannot understand.

Prison time. . . . .where child molesters get true justice.

I've seen it in person...

Problem with that is, guards will set Chester loose on the yard and sic the dogs on him while he is still only accused rather than having been convicted by a jury.

A man was stomped to death in the barracks next to mine while the guards watched football, because the intake deputy dropped the dime on him for being a child molester.

In actuality, he was accused of being in possession of "child pornography". He was arrested for drinking a beer in his car in a parking lot, and the officers found pictures he had printed out from a website.

He was found not guilty because the URL of the website was printed at the bottom of the pages, and it was determined that the content was legal.

The misdemeanor charge of drinking in public was dropped and his name was cleared. Wonder if they put that on his gravestone?

Caught the news story about this coach on the radio last night, he sounds like a real piece of shit.

I believe that the grand jury testimony is out there and is pretty damning to all involved.

There is no way anyone should think going to the Athletic Director would be enough.... I just don't get it.

Let's see, he know a serious crime is committed, he tells the staffer (everyone in the Penn State Athletic Department works for JoePa regardless of their title or place on the org chart, you could make a good case that he was more powerful the the president of the U) about it and nothing really happens. Either he is OK with how the crime is being dealt with, in which case he needs to go or he failed to use his authority to make sure the crime is dealt with correctly which did not happen.

JoePa is, or was, The Man at Penn State. Nothing happens in the Athletic Department without him.

I feel horrible about this whole thing, I have been a big fan, but it sure seems like JoePa FU.

They did. A report was made back in 1998, when Sandusky (the kid raper) was still a coach at PSU. University police got involved, but judging from what's happened since, they may have swept that one under the rug.

I've not been following the story, so I don't know all the details.

Did Paterno turn a blind eye to it and allow Sandusky to butt rape these kids? If so, then he's guilt too. BUT (no put intended), if he notified someone above him in the chain, his job was done as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, he SHOULD have taken a baseball bat to that pervert, but from what I've heard he did notify the AD or someone at the university. It's really the university's issue to deal with not Joe's.

I work in IT and I found child pornography on an employee's computer once. I reported it to HR and I was done with it. I did not notify the police. That's not my job. It was a company laptop, found by a company employee (me), and reported to the company. The employee was dismissed immediately, but as far as I know, no charges were filed.

I disagree Chad. This guy Sandusky was raping kids on the campus of Penn State University. That's much different from porn on a laptop. And Sandusky due to his professor emeritus status at the school, was still able to use the Penn State facilities, including maintaining an office there, was seen on campus as recently as LAST WEEK.

This is one of those stories that the more you read about it, the more sordid it gets.

There's a back story on this involving a boys camp called Second Mile, which Sandusky was a part of at one point. The camp is for economically disadvantaged youth, and Sandusky would take kids from there and hold football camps at various places, including Penn State. AFAIK, Sandusky's victims were from the football camps he was running.

JoePa WAS the university. Until very recently he was the single most powerful person on that campus. He got what he wanted from everyone and even the university president deferred to him. He is likely off the hook "legally" as he had a boss and reported it to him BUT in reality he was the boss and it all falls on him.

I don't get it either. I see a woman getting raped at a supermarket, I'm not running over to tell the manager, or the security guard, I'm calling the cops. The university staff and police are not the folks you should be reporting major crime to, regardless of whether they think that's their role.

You're partially correct. SOME county jails also house prison inmates serving shorter terms, or in-transit inmates awaiting court appearances on additional charges accumulated while in custody (riots, assaults, rapes, etc) or convicted felons waiting to "catch the chain" to their final destination.

Funny thing is, a convict sentenced to 365 days will generally serve his entire sentence in a county jail, and will actually remain there for approximately 305 days. Convicts sentenced to 16 months will go to a state prison and serve about 240 days.

This, of course, will depend upon the severity of the crime, and the number of strikes applied to the criminal record. California has the "3 strikes" law. 0-1 strikes will get you 55% of your sentence. 2 strikes gets you 85%. 3 strikes gets you 95% for non-violent or non-capital offenses or LIFE for a violent or gun related crime.

Don't want to jump to any conclusions, but agree that there is a difference between "legal responsibility" and "moral responsibility" and if Paterno knew the full extent of what happened and did the absolute minimum to stop it, then he should be out - - today.

Was his concern of protecting his legacy or the sordid deviancy of his subordinate more valuable than the lives ruined? ? ? From an institution that prides itself in transforming young men into educated, contributing members of society?

And the assessment that Sandusky's NFP was a vehicle to lure young boys from broken families into his grasp? Absolutely despicable. . .

Don't even care much about college football, but Bobby Bowden's stock sure went up . . . wonder if they'll take away all of Paterno's wins since 2002. . .?

Sad to say , Joe Pa , put Penn State. before everything else .Including the acts of his staff.

Kind of reminds me of the Catholic church .

There is NO excuse for what has taken place ,and Joe Pa should have taken it upon himself to make sure the right thing was done.
