President Obama says "we have lost our ambition" to for projects like the Hoover Dam and the Golden Gate bridge.

Two questions:

1. Have we?

2. Does he think that current regulations would have allowed either those projects to be built?

It's all campaign talk. Designed to manipulate the masses; it (talk) worked in '08 and I'm afraid it will work in 2012 too.

On the other hand (regulations) watch the F1 race in India today/tomorrow. I can remember when LA air looked just like that more days, than not...

Interesting question. I think Teeps is right, that it's mostly campaign talk. It goes beyond that though. BO does have an agenda to promote a sweeping change of our infrastructure away from current technologies.

There's a couple areas where this is very different from past major projects. He wants to promote development of new technologies. That is very different from dams and bridges. They were both well understood in the days of building the Golden Gate and Hoover dam. What BO is proposing is more along the lines of sending a man to the moon in the '60s. Pushing the limits of technology to do something that hasn't been done before. The impact will be very different than the Apollo program though. The Apollo program was disposable technology. The space shuttle, version 2.0 of space travel even was very limited in that it can only reach low orbit and is still very risky and temperamental. Neither program was intended to have a very long lifespan.

BO wants to re-invent our energy production and distribution with brand new technologies. This is on par with the Apollo mission with the exception that we will be expected to live with it for generations to come. Apollo was little more than a proof of concept mission. A new power generation technologies need to get past the proof of concept before we jump in head first. So far the "new" technologies have mostly proven the concepts are not very viable.

how many times can you be told no, or had your pockets fleeced from your efforts at ever increasing amounts?
You may still have a driving ambition... and if you look, alot of it is driving OVERSEAS.

Keep your damn Nanny State, and get out of my pockets.

Ambition is driven by reaping the rewards of your efforts.

When ambitious people regain confidence that they can keep what they kill, the hunter instinct will return.

Ever seen economic development in a state where the government could roll in and "nationalize" everything you've built? The enterprises tend to be small and mobile. No one spends time building fixed based assets.

1. No.
2. Not a fracking chance. No way. Uh uh. The environmental impact statement for the Hoover Dam alone would weigh more than the Dam.

Without a political slant...I think we HAVE lost our ambition.

We're a lazy society.

Someone else will do it for us.

If they don't...it's someone else's fault. It *can't* be mine...it has to be someone else! And I can find a lawyer to prove it.

I'm waiting for Webster's to remove "accountability"...

This is BS. Of course there are societal slackers but I see REALLY hard workers all about me day in and day out. Most BadW'ers kick butt and they reflect our country more than those snowflakes protesting OWS. I categorically detest Zero's statement on several levels. It is the absence and vacuum of leadership to even utter a statement like he did. It is entirely reminiscent of Carter's malaise diatribes. This bastard is simply NOT a leader. On a different level, his statement is an absolute falsehood. Americans ARE exceptional and are capable of miracles if this stupid government would step aside and do only what it is constitutionally mandated to do.

We are the baddest ass and we attract the best from China and India amongst other countries who in turn will make great Americans.

Statements like this from 0 infuriate me as an American.

A statement such as "We have lost our ambition" is only useful when it is accompanied by follow-up rhetoric that lights a fire under everyone's butt, and gets a nation fired up to DO something.

Otherwise, it's just wasted breath, and meets with anger from the ambitious and proud, and apathy from, well, the apathetic.

What was the context in which O said that?

"We've lost our ambition, our -- our imagination, and -- and -- our willingness to do the things that built the Golden Gate Bridge and Hoover Dam and unleashed all the potential in this country."
Obama made this statement at a $5,000 per ticket fund raiser in San Francisco.

Seems he feels more comfortable expressing his contempt for us in San Francisco. Some may recall the "Guns and Religion" comment he made there.

Why do you continually make excuses for this train wreck of a president? A true leader inspires. A true leader picks up the people by challenging them to find their greatness. Obama joins the pantheon of President Carter in showing anti-leadership. This bastard's ego is so humongous that there is not the scintilla of a chance that HE is the problem. Would Churchill have said that Brits had forgotten how to fight? Would Reagan have said that we were no longer worthy of greatness? With Zero, everything is everybody else's fault. I am flabbergasted that you couldn't see through this in a nanosecond.
Again, a true leader inspires. Do you think Zero is inspirational? I sure as Hell don't.

Reindog, I thought I was pretty much agreeing with your point of view, by posting what I did. There's nothing wrong with a coach, leader, etc firing up everyone to perform, lighting a fire, whatever.

Try re-reading what I wrote without your prejudice against me that I am trying to be an O apologist.

>>>There's nothing wrong with a coach, leader, etc firing up everyone to perform, lighting a fire, whatever.

That's true and I, for one, can't wait until we get one in The White House.

Obama is not only patently unqualified by virtue of his lack of any (make that ANY as I'm not sure he's ever held a paying job) experience . . he also exhibits virtually zero of the traits of a good leader.

I had the pleasure, from the time I was a kid, to be around great leaders that ranged from my Dad to the General Joseph Fegan (who I served as a Congressional Liaison while serving in the United States Marine Corps) to my Drill Instructors to the current President of the company I work for.

Obama is pathetic and fails in each and every measure of a leader.

I've never seen a person so consumed with apologizing and blaming. A good leader LEADS and ACCEPTS RESPONSIBILITY. During the years I worked for Buell if I, or any other Elf, screwed something up . . as long as we were working within the Buell Values no one but Erik Buell went to Juneau and took the hit. I've never once, in over a quarter century, heard him blame anyone.

Obama really is, in addition to being what could well be classed as a pathological liar (he lies while looking you in the eye when the truth is clearly visible to all right over his shoulder) who has surrounded himself with similarly flawed individuals such as Pelosi and Holder . . (we have to read it to know what's is it? . . .that phrase alone would get you fired)

I see now why his wife struggled so desperately in her quest to find a source of pride in America.

Most of us never had to look.

Thanks for your insight, Court. Obama's ambition statement fundamentally disturbs me and people who continue to cling to him can only be seen as being blind or have never known greatness yet. Americans are ravenously hungry for a leader and the parallels to 1979 are stark. Love him or hate him, Ronald Reagan washed away the malaise and instilled a renewed pride in the greatness called America.

Obama believes that the American People are not good enough to understand and appreciate the greatness that is Obama. They are bitter and cling to their religion and guns. Indeed. Our Founding Fathers were fully cognizant of these mini despots who arise in every society and that is why the Constitution that we inherited from them is the very hallmark of modern civilization.

I have hope that Americans will tell the current president to keep his admonishments to himself and that it is time for him to go home.

Blake, that may be. What I was trying to get at is, better than just "better." A clean shot to the head might be a "better" way to go than being stabbed in the gut seven times, but it still ends up as a comparison between pretty unpleasant alternatives.

His statement pisses me off at every level. Maybe he was referring to the people in his administration. He could not be talking about most Americans.

Of course I am making this statement after working 14 hour days for most of the past two weeks working on a very large equipment proposal for nuclear plants in Belgium.

I do not think that there is anything he has said in the past that makes me this made.

He must go in 2012 for the sake of this country.

I guess we should give him a little leeway, after all he has never had to work.

First and foremost, I am outraged by the influence of money in politics.

I don't hold out much hope of anything really changing there, given the crap, er, I mean crop, of current candidates. However, I would say Ron Paul comes closest for me, speaking out unfailingly and frankly, tirelessly, about an out of control Executive branch and a wimpy Legislative.

I am outraged by Obama saying one thing ("down with the special interests") and doing another (how many Wall Street exec's can we stuff in our cabinet? Bernanke, Geithner, Paulsen. Lawrence Summers, etc., etc., ad nauseum - does no one else see a problem with this?!?) READ HERE.

I think the problem is more important than partisan politics, and should be uniting us all.

That statement, from Obama, is a bit disingenuous. No levy, let alone a big hydroelectric dam will ever withstand the environmental scrutiny and get built. The Golden Gate would likewise be replaced with a $45 billion tunnel.
I've turned into a real skeptic when it comes to the next American accomplishment.

Now there is an idea that Obama would probably like...an undersea tunnel directly on an active fault line.

Who do you blame for that?

When politicians insert themselves in business, businesses have no choice but to insert themselves in politics. I blame the politicians. If they'd leave us alone, the political money would dry up.

I'm sure many have lost their ambition. I am also sure that a Government that promised everything to everyone so they feel no need or desire to try to better themselves or their situation is a big reason for that.

I absolutely agree.

The current crop, although largely honest and capable to varying degrees, lacks anyone that appears to be emerging as a leader. They are, or were for a bit, entertaining and by the end of the next 15 debates will have effectively paid laid waste to each other as they continue the fool's errand of trying to explain how you'd guide a nation in a 30 second sound bite.
