Long hair doesn't make a helmet strap detach from the helmet.

Blake any of the three injuries can most definately be fatal. He was dead on the way to the medical center. It is procedure to try to revive to up to an hour. Most stop in 30-45 min. I this case it was 45.BTW I'd say Rossi knew as well Edwards.

Truly a shame... I'm no racer, but having watched several Moto GP races this year and seeing Marco go out too hot and lose it on the first lap a few times already this season might of played a factor in his decision to try and "save" it by riding his knee puck and guiding the bike back across the track in an effort to get it back to upright. . . Obviously in hindsight letting the bike slide out from under him and traveling wide of the race surface would have been a better option; but racers are a different breed - - they all want to win, so can't fault the man for trying . . .

But again, an unfortunate tragedy. . .

Dana,

I agree, any could be fatal. What I'm saying is that of the three, one of the three is likely the cause of his death. I don't see how Rossi or Colin could possibly have known anything beyond Marco's unconscious state. I don't see the point in asserting that they knew he was dead. I've raced and seen fellow competitors lying unconscious in the middle of the track. All kinds of thoughts race through your mind, none are certain.

I don't think Marco was guiding the bike at all. He may have been hoping for the best, but from what I saw, he was just along for the ride getting dragged across the track. He was on the ground beyond any chance of recovery.

Well, I guess others (with more experience than myself) can debate that point ad naseum, but I know most riders who have attended crash training learn to separate themselves from the bike - - and, I'm also no physicist, but going wide into a turn and then cutting back to the inside of the track is most likely only achieved by rider input. . . Without starting a pissing contest - - I agree he was past the point of no return on recovery, but that doesn't mean he didn't "try" to get the bike back upright. . .

No offense meant to anyone who races on any level, but I can understand his motivation to try to keep aboard, (if indeed that was his intent)
. . .

End of the day, still a tragedy, and a great loss to the motorcycling community. . .

Blake - I disagree with the last part (and WANT someone to prove me wrong), just because it seems that if it was completely out of control it'd continue going the direction it was going in (to the left) and that by him trying and trying it was heading back towards the right.

Either way, we can talk til we're blue in the face and it wont bring this young man back.

As stated, a motorcycle traveling at those speeds coming into contact with a helmeted head was probably just about enough to cause fatal damage. I can not imagine the spinal injuries that were caused.

But Blake, I do agree that safety standards need to be re-reviewed on this. A helmet coming off like that is very odd. It wasnt like this was some poor schmuck using a super old helmet that just gave out. Im sure he had a pretty new helmet, top of the line.

Again, as I stated on page one - my thoughts go out to family, friends, and fans. Its a shame

This is terrible.

A month or two ago one of the British rags had a great "what would super sic do" article on how to ride like Marco on the street.

Does anyone have a PDF of that? I would like to reread it.

Marco's untimely death will mostly affect his family and friends. i don't think that threads started to remember him are the right place to disect and discuss the incident or the aftermath. jmo but please keep that in the MotoGp thread or start another. thx. Marco was a very determined, controversial and exciting racer who will be missed.
RIP Marco.

Who knows about how tangled he was with the bars, etc. He might not have been able to get his hand out from under the bike, and was being dragged along.

The helmet thing is funny though. Unless his chin came back so far, that the strap came up and over his face.

Helmets are usually pretty tight, and hard to get off, even trying to, but you can never tell.

Our prayers go out to his family

Based on the different angles of video and pics I've seen, and I've seen nothing definitive, but it certainly looks as if Rossi's rear wheel MAY have had something to do with his helmet coming off. It also doesn't look to me like it woulda changed the tragic results had it stayed on.

I've been sick about this since it happened, but now I'm starting to look at what the rest of us can learn from it, which will be part of his legacy, much like all the safety improvements NASCAR made after the death of Dale Earnhardt. Something I think the helmet companies need to look into is how the helmet strap is anchored to the shell and possibly the materials the strap is made of.

Personally I don't agree with this at all - - this isn't a tribute on Marco's personal website, where true family and friends might see it, and really, what is the value of posting "RIP Marco" on the Buell forum ? ?

I think a lot of riders, regardless of skill level, might benefit from some discourse on the events, not that most of us will be taking corners on a track in excess of 140 mph, but still . . .

I do appreciate the "Ciao Marco" link, so thanks for posting that. . .

Awesome pic Dana!

HMP,

At some point, he surely was trying to recover. Once he was on the ground, I think he was along for the ride. I've not seen any continuous coverage of the incident from Marco first losing the front and running wide to the bike regaining traction and shooting across the track in front of Edwards and Rossi. Bikes have been known to do all kinds of unexpected maneuvers in such a crash situation. Marco was on the ground.
