I get mine on the 23rd and I can hardly wait. I do a ridiculous amount of everything from my phone so I think it will be extremely useful, especially once an untethered jailbreak comes out for it, which I think may be available before I even get mine. I have a side business repairing and jailbreaking iPhones, and I've had several of them, all models. I know a lot of people don't think it's much different than the 4, but other than its aesthetics, it's a new beast, and the best performing phone currently on the market.

I'm downloading iOS 5 for my 4 right now, probably wait a month or two on the 4s. I've been blowing through cash like a coke head in Columbia the last few months.

The twenty - third???

Holy Smoke!!

What are you going to do between now and then?

Run iOS5 on your current phone and pretend its a 4S?

I'm picking up mine tomorrow morning at 8am at the local Radio Shack. I reserved it last week.

God, I'm going to miss those crowds in front of the local apple store, but it is fifty miles away.

Natcherly, I'm running iOS5 on my 'Pad2 and my iPhone 4, just for practice.

PS: I already pre-sold my old phone for delivery Friday.
I got more for it than the new one is going to cost me.
Love that part.

Im gonna stick it out and not waste my 2-year agreement (reduced price) on the 4s.

I'll run the 4 with iOS 5 until the real iPhone 5 makes it here.

I was completely disappointed. But that's what I get for watching those rumor sites on the iPhone 5....
So next year I'm gonna ignore the rumor mills and see what they release.

Plus, iOS 5 seems to be the coolest thing for me! But I gotta wait til Monday to download it and see

I shattered the screen on my Dinc and will need to replace soon. It still works because I have a screen saver on it that keeps all the glass in there. I was going to go for the Dinc2 or Bionic, but I have an ipad and imac, so an iphone may blend well into the household. Does anyone have any thoughts on how the Dinc or Dinc2 fairs against the other phones?

Jon, I always sell the old one when I get the new ones, as well as buying selling several overseas : D. I've made a pretty good dime off of it ; ). I know the 23rd is a bit off, but beggars can't be choosers... I bought my buddy's upgrade off of him to get this one, and that way I'll have an upgrade available around the time the 5 comes out.

Your gonna love it Ross, I don't care what they say.

I got down to my local Bridgehampton radio shack at 7:30. Nobody was there, so I was first in the store which was lucky because I got activated right away and was on my way home, by 8:15.

Guys who got them in the mail around 10 spent hours trying to get activated as the ATT servers melted.

I love the camera, and the Siri voice control really works better than anything I've seen so far.

You can do email, enter map locations, dial the phone, search the net, and a lot more, all by voice.

The apple map function works much better, faster, gives you a choice of routes.

About half of my apps upgraded, and they all work better and faster and smarter.

Took me a couple of hours to do all the settings, enter voicemail pass words, set the battery percentage, set up the blue tooth, sync with my computer and so forth.

Since I sold my old 32 gig for $350, and bought this new 16 gig for $200, I guess you could say I definitely got my money's worth.

Is this something that iOS couldn't do before 5? I haven't noticed it in my previous experiences with it.

Is there something better about fixed storage as it relates to performance compared to removeable and much cheaper storage on other smartphones?

Frog man -
There was some voice control in the previous versions of the iOS, but it was sparse, and didn't work very well.
Now it is all over the place, and works about 95% of the time, even in a moving vehicle.
It is also intelligent, so when I asked it to remind me to "call Luis tomorrow morning", it scans my contacts, and asks me which one of the three Luis's on my contact list I have in mind:-).

I am just learning how it works, but already I am feeling that typing this post has a bit of an old fashioned feel to it.

Johnny-short answer, of course is "no".
Long answer is that with iOS 5, apple is moving towards storage in the cloud.

So what we see in this device, which has been unjustly panned as not quite good enough for all the apple fan boys who thought they were entitled to an iPhone 5, is a rather revolutionary device in a familiar form.

I have hardly had it for 24 hours, and I am just beginning to understand how different it really is, and how it is pointing to a rather different future.

I still don't quite understand the cloud storage concept, but I sense it is certainly the way of the future.

It certainly reminds one of the pre PC days when we had "time sharing" on computers. I am talking of the 1970's here.

Hmmm... still no 4g.

That's pretty disappointing. Cloud storage on a device with limited bandwidth seems like a bad idea to me.

Apple makes good stuff, but this move toward the cloud on a tiered data plan just makes very little sense.

I don't plan on using the cloud and I'm planning on getting the 32 GB. I never had a problem with the old way of transferring data on these phones and will prefer them. Also I found out I can upgrade early for an $18 fee, so I'm getting mine today! I can't wait until an untethered jailbreak is released : D. I know a lot of stuff in Cydia still doesnt work with iOS 5, but stuff is being upgraded for compatibility by the day and I figure within a week or two most of the stuff will be working and there will be an untethered JB released. I've played with iOS 5 a little bit on a 3GS I rebuilt, updated, and sold and I'm very impressed with it.

Where is the best place to sell an old 3Gs?

On Jon's cue . . I bought mine, put it in a case with a screensaver and have the box and everything so it'll sell precisely as I got it.

Hmmm... still no 4g.

Apparently, Apple is waiting for 4G to become more widely available and also, for the newer smaller 4G chips coming in 2012.

I'm in a large metro area and 4G is spotty at best.

If fixed storage isnt much different than removable in terms of performance than why is the price difference leaps and bounds more expensive than the price difference of an 8, 16 and 32 gig micro sd card?

Johnny -
I suppose you already might know this, but you are correct in identifying one of apples nasty little habits: ripping off their loving and loyal customers in the matter of selling memory.

Actually the iPhone is far from the worst example.

Apple sells a 16 gig ram upgrade for their latest desktop for $775. ( actually a 13 gig upgrade as the machine comes with a measily 3 gigs).

A real 16 gigs of ram is available from OWC, the leading supplier of accessories for the mac, for a mere $160:almost one fifth of what apple charges.

Sort of makes the 16 gig upgrade on the phone sort of a bargain!

Court -
I always sell my old phones on Craigs: only takes a day or two, and it should be even easier if you are in the City. Good photos are always a plus: you can take them now with your new iPhone 4S.

I dont know the answer but figured there was a legit benefit to using fixed storage and batteries since the price is so high to upgrade and people are not naive enough to totally overlook a rip off like that.

Are you being sarcastic, Bad?

I hope not because Apple didn't invent any of those things. However, Apple did develop and market their version of those products in a unique way which has brought them much success in the marketplace. Furthermore, the refinement and quality of their products I don't believe anyone can dispute.

No. There is absolutely no reason not to have a removable storage card slot, but that is just the Apple way. Apple does get their internal flash memory dirt cheap due to contracts they signed, but that still does not mean the user should suffer by not being able to expand or easily transfer files from unit to unit.

quote:

There was some voice control in the previous versions of the iOS, but it was sparse, and didn't work very well.

Good to know, I never noticed it. My Android tablet has had some basic voice commands since release, and it can type what you speak pretty accurately. I doubt it is as good as the Siri system though.

quote:

I still don't quite understand the cloud storage concept, but I sense it is certainly the way of the future.

Cloud is great, I've been using cloud based services like Dropbox for ages, and doing cloud the old fashioned way with FTPs and such. Quick and easy access to my documents and photos, and nothing is stored in only one place, so if my tablet is stolen, I don't lose anything. Same if my PC hard drive dies, my server catches fire again, or a meteor lands on my web host in Amsterdam. I can quickly and easily get to my stuff from any internet connected device.

quote:

Hmmm... still no 4g.

That's pretty disappointing. Cloud storage on a device with limited bandwidth seems like a bad idea to me.

I agree 100%. 4G is a must have, especially where I am where I am in a 4G zone 90% of the time. It is faster than the crappy cable companies home connections too. The lack of unlimited data on most providers will make the phone companies rich from the overage charges.

quote:

My data is unlimited, plus there's always wifi.

One of the lucky ones.

quote:

I don't plan on using the cloud and I'm planning on getting the 32 GB

It is one of those things that once you do, you will never want to switch back. Once setup, everything is done automagically, and you never have to worry about anything again.

quote:

If fixed storage isnt much different than removable in terms of performance than why is the price difference leaps and bounds more expensive than the price difference of an 8, 16 and 32 gig micro sd card?

Profit. Flash memory is flash memory. Be it on a USB thumbdrive, the chip inside your Nintendo DS cartridge, an SD card your camera uses, or the soild state drive in a phone or computer. It is all pretty much the same. That is a bit oversimplifying, and like saying the Blast motor is the same as the Veyron, but they both work the same way and have the same principals. Apple charges ridiculous prices, because that is what they do best.

quote:

Typing from it now. Huge upgrade and the cloud base is actually very nice. And I actually didn't type this I just spoke to this Siri thing

Great to hear! : )

quote:

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not, but Apple rarely innovates. They were not the first one to release a personal computer, a mp3 player, smartphone, or tablet. I've personally had a Blackberry phone before the iPhone was even a rumor, and a Nokia tablet that also predates the original iPhone. Hell, it took them till the iPhone 4 to make a unit with better specs. Even when the 4 came out, it was still a year behind everyone else on the spec sheet. The 4s finally adds dual core, but it still is missing major deal breakers like a SD card slot, HDMI output, and 4G.

Jon, you really can't compare flash and RAM prices, but yea Apple is a terrible offender with the prices. $160 for 16gb? You can easily find 16GB DDR3 kits on Newegg for less than a Benjamin these days.

quote:

Good photos are always a plus: you can take them now with your new iPhone 4S.

Does the 4S suffer from the same issues as the 4 with putting nasty red and green halos on light backgrounds?

quote:

I dont know the answer but figured there was a legit benefit to using fixed storage and batteries since the price is so high to upgrade and people are not naive enough to totally overlook a rip off like that.

Sad but true.
