I have been getting a lot of calls where 1-800-service show up in the caller ID. Most of them have been in support to make Obama a one term President. The one I just receive 5 minutes ago was from the NRA. They asked me several question about the new bill Obama and the U.N are working on about weapons and how it could affect us as gun owners. I pretty much agreed with what they told me. After that 2 minutes was up it turned into a sales pitch to become a NRA member. I declined the guy twice then had to hang up on him after he got pissed. I understand power in numbers is good, but I do not own a gun and do not plan on ever owning a gun. I do support the 2nd amendment, but to have an NRA member pressure me to join and start to get pissed because I said no. That is bullshit. I thought the call was to ask for my support in not voting for Obama. It was more of a sales call that anything. Has anyone else had this happen? I think it is another way for companies and organizations to get around the do not call list. Which I happen to be on. I thought about turning them in, but it is an organization I respect and do not want to cause them any harm. | ||

Same thing happened to me when the Red Cross hired former telemarketers to do their drudge work of contacting former donors. I've not given to the Red Cross since, but have been willing to give to other organizations that operate blood banks. Actually, I should give the Red Cross another chance, I think the outcry from many people led them to abandon the use of telethugs to get their message out. Sometimes it is the messenger who should be shot! | ||

I support the second amendment also, do not own a gun and probably never will. I also think that it is a pity that the NRA has such a NARROW political focus, as there are too many issues that I personally vary in opinion on to send them any money. The best you can do on that IS to hang up and let it go. Hopefully the guy will learn how to do a proper call at some point, or maybe not. Either way, just hang up and move on. Got one of the NRA phone calls to renew my membership. They kept pushing me to do a lifetime membership. I agreed to renew for one year. I get a bill on my CC for a 3 year renewal. What a bunch of thieves. I have not renewed since that ran out. | ||

I got the exact same call about three or four years ago. It wasn't about Obama but a nice, pretty sounding lady called about losing my gun rights and how guns were going to be hard to come by. I laughed it off and she asked what was so funny. I told her that we have a festival (actually coming up in a couple of weeks) where someone can walk down the street and pick up any gun they'd ever want; shotgun, rifle, pistol, hunting, sport etc. No wait, no Brady bill, no nothing. Cash and carry. Then she went on about how not everyone has that opportunity and we needed to vote to keep our rights blah, blah, blah. Then the sales pitch started, wanted me to send in $500 to join the NRA. I politely told her that I'd vote to keep our guns and support the 2nd amendment but I can do that for free. Then I hung up on her. | ||

NRA lost me permanently when they sent me a sh*tty DVD straight from the history channel as a "thank you" for being a member. I watched it. It was thin cable crap but watchable. I loaned it to a friend then threw it out. More than a month later, they sent me a bill for it. The wording of the bill was: If you choose to get the rest of the series of DVDs, send in a check for $17 and get a new one each month. If you don't want the DVD, SIMPLY RETURN THE DVD IN THE ORIGINAL PACKAGING. More than a month later??? I threw the empty cardboard box in the fireplace immediately after I opened it! Add to that, the tools kept on telemarketing to me for years after. I joined G.O.A.L. (http://www.goal.org/) They are not tools. They are rational non-idiots. | ||

If I don't know the number, I don't answer. I'm with Blake on this one! If I don't know who's calling me, I simply don't answer it! As far as the NRA is concerned, I think they have done more to hurt the average hunter than they have helped. It all boils down to real hunters don't need assult rifles to hunt with and the NRA's instance to allow everyone to have one only hurts because farmers now don't want a bunch of crazies on their land with all the high powered rifles shooting. It's too dangerous out there now. When I was a kid growing up back in Missouri, I could go everywhere to hunt but now with all the high powered rifles and the accidents that happen with the liebilty they create, the farmers have all posted their land and don't allow much hunting now days. Livestock gets shot, barns get hit, and even houses get hit from time to time so most all the farmers just post their land these days. It's ashame too because I really enjoyed hunting. | ||

I'd argue that hunters have hurt themselves more than the NRA, and it has nothing to do with "assault weapons". It seems that more farmers/landowners are willing to lease out there land, than just let anyone hunt it. And more hunters are willing to spend the money to lease the land, therein eliminating the guy that isn't willing to pony up the dough. Makes it hard for someone to try to get their kids into hunting if they can't afford to lease the land. I also am unaware of any "assault weapon" that would be more powerful than any other weapon. An AR-15 chambered in .223 is not more powerful than your standard bolt action rifle chambered in 7mm Mag. It may be "too dangerous" out there now, but that is more likely from unsafe hunters than the gun they carry. And conversely due to less hunters having the ability to afford leased land, more hunters are on the limited public land. Just my .02 | ||

Thank God the kids start early in life hunting most are good shots and safe hunters at a very early age.( abig advantage of living in a rural area) | ||

Remember that the term "assault weapon" is a favorite of the gun banning groups. It is essentially a meaningless term that refers to non-functional parts of the weapon. I have seen a demonstration in which a man converted a normal rifle to an "assault weapon" by changing the wood stock to a scary black plastic one. It's non-technical people making laws about what they don't understand at its finest. | ||

The 2nd amendment has zero to do with hunting. The 2nd amendment is ALL about the right to "keep and bear" (own/have and carry) lethal militarily useful firearms. | ||

I have an app on my iphone that blocks calls, and an app called number guru that adds a contact in my address book of known sales and robodialers. I feed the address book entry into the blocking app, and those numbers get a busy signal when they call me. Pretty convenient. And if they aren't already in the list, they only get to call me once. Had to jailbreak the phone to install the blocking app. | ||

I save all known pest numbers into one contact and set the ring on silent for it. Name of contact? "Pest". | ||

Why the heck doesn't Apple or the phone service provider offer a number blocking capability with the phone? Seems like a no brainer. | ||

AT&T does offer that service, for $5 a month. Parental control or some such nonsense. Which is why Apple won't let an app into the app store that does those things. You have to jail break. | ||

How does one truly know if these 1-800 "sales" calls are from the claimed organization? I keep waiting for the discovery that the majority of these type calls are smear campaigns against the very organizations purported to be calling.  |
