Guy, on your story about those cams; when my friend Jim ran 11.08 back in the 70's he used Leinwebber cams in his 74" ironhead Sporty. They were pretty new also and I remember seeing them. They looked like bricks with a lot of duration and practically no accelleration ramps. The just literally banged open and shut, were really hard on pushrods & valve springs but BOY did they perform. Do you remember Leinwebber? With about 13-1 compression he had to use a small block Chevy roller system to even fire it up. Fun days! Here's a not so good picture of his bike when it was still streetable and ran 11.88.

The story about Jim and the what we all thought was some kind of new ignition is true. He was always playing some kind of head game more for the fun than trying to screw you up. He liked to play. Sure do miss him!He always gave me a hard time [in fun] for running gas .Said it was for washing parts. |

Heres a good one - For over a year this guy [I think] was Byron Hines as in Vance and Hines would come to the races to help Elmer. Also Elmers wife who I don't think ever missed a race.Elmer would do his burnout across the line and his wife would push him back almost effortlessly. Every time Byron would push him back you could see him struggle. Leaned into it and pushing with everything he had. Everyone knew but him and it took him forever to figure out that Elmer would ride the front brake when he was pushing! I think most of the joking came from the fact that their bikes were always running pretty good and had more time than guys like me who were still learning how to make their bikes consistant. |
