I have seen more shorts and flip flops this year than I have in the past... How in the hell do you look at your bike and think "I'm gonna ride with flip flops today".... and think its a good idea..... | ||

wolf - funny you should say that. I went shooting the other day with some people and on the way back we passed a kawasaki of some sort, rider was in a tank top, shorts, and flops. And he had his feet off of the pegs, legs almost extended fully, feet just barely off of the ground. Before I could say anything, my non-riding friend commented on how dumb that seemed. So even people who dont ride understand how dumb it seems. Ignorance man. As for helmet laws, I like wearing a helmet, but there are times when I wouldnt wear one. The last time I had a mc at the beach (south carolina) I took some short trips without a helmet, never exceeding 25mph I didnt feel too in danger by it. But highway speeds or even 40+, no thanks. | ||

Phil was a good friend of my brothers and no matter what the troopers and reporters are saying.... no helmet would have saved him in the manner of impact in this situation!!! It is sad that it happened in this situation and worse that he was riding his best friends bike because his own was down(imagine having to live with that and having to wonder if it was your bikes fault). Witnesses say it looked like a boot lace got caught and he lost control trying to free it... can't we have a little sympathy for a fallen brother instead of mocking him in death for a choice he made on his own ... bad choice or not. | ||

Add to the lack of gear a nice silver strip of cords showing on the rear tire. Is that supposed to be some sort of badge of excellence? Seen 3 in the last two weeks like that. | ||

Today, the 4th of July, we celebrate our freedom and I feel we should all be free to ride our motorcycles without a helmet and our automobiles without wearing a seatbelt. It should be our choice, NOT the government's! I almost always wear my helmet when I ride, but that's my choice. | ||

You have to wear a seatbelt because its cost effective. You don't have to wear a helmet because its cost effective. Its cheaper to bury you than take you to the hospital. On average it cost over 20,000 to take a rider to the hospital that was wearing a helmet.... but they get to go home. On average it cost 10,000 to take a rider to the hospital that had no helmet on.... but they go to the morgue | ||

It all boils down to beans. I saved and got a go-kart when I was 12. My mom and step #1 canceled the insurance on my 2 sisters and bet the farm on me. I must have ticked them off drifting driveways day after day, riding it on the highway and back roads engine after engine. | ||

Well there no shortage of volunteers for the box or skin grafts either. I was out for a put-put on the KLR and on the way back form the store some really fat guy on a cruiser turned in front of me, no helmet, shirt, wearing shorts and (best of all) smoking a big old stogy! Not a care in the world…or brain cell either! He was a sight for SOMEONE else’s eyes NOT mine! Even on a ˝ mile put-put to the store I wear all the gear. 9 years as a firefighter taught me to dress for the job at hand! And I’d rather sweat than bleed.  | ||

I cringe whenever I see someone without any gear on or lacking some essentials. I can't imagine anyone wearing flip-flops or sandals while riding a motorcycle. I did see my dopey neighbor cutting their grass in flip flops once. (a lawn with lots of sticks/twigs etc.) At 10 yrs old I stubbed my big toe very bad while riding a bicycle barefoot.... More recently (early 90's) I sliced my bigtoe in two on the edge of an open computer case in my basement... oh the pain.... never ever again will my feet go unprotected. I wear my gear all the time, I even wear steel tip sneakers when not riding. Toes can hurt bigtime. Nope, no flip-flops or sandals for me for fear of something "anything" dropping on my toes (but, I will go barefoot on a beach and walk to my mailbox barefoot on occasion) | ||

Helmet laws are made because of insurance companies and helmet manufacturers.Not by someone worried about your noggin.I agree we should let natural selection do it's work. | ||

A couple of years ago my neighbors were selling poker run booklets to raise money for one of their riding buddies that died of head injuries in a minor accident with no helmet. He died on a benefit ride for A.B.A.T.E. If anyone doesn't already know they are big anti-helmet law advocates. It's hard to not see the irony when this sort of thing happens. I wore a seat belt long before it was a law. I wear a helmet without needing a law. I do give my neighbors an occasional jab about not wearing helmets, but all three of them are "big boys". | ||

They have been compulsory in Aus for longer than I have been riding. 1972 I think it was. | ||

Not only will I ALWAYS wear a helmet, mandatory or no, but it will ALWAYS have a chin bar. Sure, living is good and all, but I'd rather not have to go through the remainder of life looking like Freddie Krueger. ~SM | ||

Well, I guess most of you will be glad to know I do not have any children. Boy, I'd hate to pass my genes on since I choose when and if I wear a helmet. |
