So I am a veteran and I am looking for a job. I have heard of some employer incentives and I am trying to use that to assist in my job search. I find the legal mumbo jumbo hard to read and sifting through all of the AND/OR statements its hard to see what or if I qualify for anything. Maybe somebody out there knows a bit more. It seems right now from what I read that to be a "qualified veteran" you have had to have applied and used food stamps for 3 months. I havent ever needed food stamps so it seems im out of luck |

First off contact your state dept of vet affairs and get them a copy of your 214. Also contact your county vet office if there is one and get them a copy of your 214. You need to be a registered vet to gain access to programs and hiring preference. Lots of this can be done with a fax. Some require the DD214 copy 4 that has codes. http://www2.illinois.gov/veterans/Pages/default.aspx http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/publications/pdf_publications/per_d195.pdf (Message edited by kc10_fe on July 10, 2011) |

Any federal job you should be able to claim a 5 point preference. A disabled vet gets a 10 point preference. All the info you need should be on USAJOBS site. Sorry I can't give you a url from my phone but maybe later from my laptop. It is 'dog eat dog' for the unemployed right now. Use every advantage you have! |

Ever thought of going into the ANG/Reserves? Helps out quite a bit when youre in between stuff. Did you get the Post 911 GI Bill? E-5 BAH for going to skool isnt shabby dude. Add some drills into that and you can make it or be in good shape. Its easier to cross flow into another branch too when youre part time. Trick part is finding if there is a direct MOS/AFSC transfer and unit vacancies. |
