So I tagged along on a group ride last night. Not something I normally do, but it was a great night and a buddy invited me along. We had about 3 dozen bikes and the ride headed into Chicago's south side with plans of riding north on LSD.

We ran across a group of cops coming the opposite direction. The pulled a U-turn behind us and got on the loud speaker telling us to split up and get out of the area... The tow trucks are on the way.

We stopped at the next red light, not really sure what the hell to do and a cop pulls up right next to me. He was being very nice, but at the same time told me that they had just towed a group with about 50 bikes on LSD when they got a call about our group. I explained that I only knew one guy in the bunch and that we were thinking of bailing anyway. That was the truth, but I can imagine the skepticism the cop may have had.

Well we did drop out of the group right after that so I don't know exactly what happened from there. I do have to question how they can just pull over a group of bikes and have them towed. Anyone else ever have an experience like this?

And yes there was riding going on that the police would not approve of, but nothing that I saw that was over the top. A couple of guys doing the occasional wheelie and we were rolling a bit faster than most other traffic.

You shouldn't be riding on LSD - that stuff messes with your mind.

Not sure but i know a few Chicago cops and i will ask them.

I ride LSD as often as possible not in a group of that many but still I love that ride especially hauling ass south with the lake breeze on my left and the bright lights to the right with the Drake coming at you!

I'm willing to bet it is some gang law if its legit....

Oh on another note for those not living in Illinois but not in Chicago this is good news

HB2860 Dead Red Light Bill went through the house after the Senate amended it to exclude Chicago with a 101-11 vote.

Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that in municipalities with less than 2,000,000 inhabitants, the driver of a motorcycle, facing any steady red signal which fails to change to a green signal within a reasonable period of time because of a signal malfunction or because the signal has failed to detect the arrival of the motorcycle due to the motorcycle's size or weight, has the right to proceed, after yielding the right of way to oncoming traffic facing a green signal, subject to the rules applicable after making a stop at a stop sign. Provides that a county, or a municipality with less than 2,000,000 inhabitants, including a home rule county or municipality, may not use an automated traffic law enforcement system to issue violations in instances where a motorcyclist enters an intersection against a red signal indication when the red signal fails to change to a green signal within a reasonable period of time because of a signal malfunction or because the signal has failed to detect the arrival of the motorcycle due to the motorcycle's size or weight.

This is what will take place for HB2860

(1) The bill must get to the Governor within 30 days

(2) The Governor has 60 days to either Sign or Veto the bill

(3) If he signs the bill it will become law effective January 1, 2012

(4) If he Vetoes the bill we will go for a Veto Over-ride in the fall session

(5) If he does nothing with the bill it will become law effective January 1, 2012

not sure how they could actually catch 3 dozen bikers, let alone tow them all. i actually ride with a chicago cop/biker pretty often... i'll have to ask him about it.

on that note: http://area4ridetoremember.com/id33.html
BIG ride with a lot of cops & others. [warning: lots of harleys, not many helmets, not much gear... but fun with lots of good people for a good cause]
