Until I needed the root canal.

Get the gas! Nothing like an adventure ride while the dentist and his assistant are working in your mouth.

Ohhhh ugghhhhh ..... sorry, I tried to reach the phone.....must be another weather front coming in!

Morphine is good. Tylox too. Too much pain can ruin a person.

Char,

I wasn't trying to romanticize the painkillers, just comment on their effectiveness as painkillers. They were a absolute godsend for me. I had no desire to continue taking them once the pain subsided. The doctors were very emphatic about how addictive the Tylox could be. Frankly the feeling they left me with beyond killing the pain is not one that is at all palatable to me. Not sure why folks seek out that kind of "high."

WHAT? Isn't getting the doctor to over-prescribe Vicodin THE best thing about getting hurt?

The reason I resisted the pain medication, is because, as some of you know, I've had substance problems in the past.

I have nothing against pain meds, and believe in their use. If used as intended. They were a necessity after my wreck. I just have to be very careful when taking them. For ME, the idea of getting the doctor to prescribe too many, or taking them to feel good, and get a buzz on, is ruininess to me and will lead to destruction.

Thyne own self be true, is the watch phrase for me. : )

gentlemen,

No matter how fast you're going the distance to the ground doesn't change all that much. To have broken that many bones means, as someone suggested, the handlebars probably did it.

Sorry about your crash dude. Hope it doesn't slow you down too much when you get back to that saddle.

I disagree. Pain is your body telling you you messed up.

Arcticktm, glad you didn't get worse. Broken bones suck, weather prediction and all that. Worse is when the bones hold, and the soft stuff rips....

Recovery is going to be sooooo fun, but you can do it.

Listen to the docs.
Read the stupid paperwork that comes with the drugs.
Pay attention to "interactions" and "contraindications". Really.

I got very messed up, physically, on simvistatin. A fracking cholesterol med. I'm still recovering, years later. ( couldn't bend knee to put on foot peg. On a Cyclone! ) So really read the stupid med sheets.

I'm an addictive personality. 3 days on Demerol ( synthetic morphine ) and the nurse tells me I'm off it, and offers tylenol. My reaction gave me pause as I was about to curse the nice nurse who'd treated me well for 3 days.... Stopped myself in time, but what a revelation. Withdrawal was fairly mild....I'm told. But night sweats with cravings taught me a lot about my brain chemistry, and I now avoid pain meds with any euphoric qualities. Unless I'm broken again.....

Control the pain. Be aware of side effects. Drink plenty of water. ( watch out for constipation. ) Don't watch the movie Eurotrip until the ribs heal enough for a sneeze. Get well.

My recent experience showed how hard it it to NOT get a narcotic when you show up in the ER with a broken bone. I asked three times to not be prescribed any kind of narcotic, and verified twice afterwards if what they prescribed me was a narcotic. All confidentially assured me it wasn't (Tramadol).

Tramadol, it turns out, is a synthetic narcotic. :/ In my experience, if it's not a narcotic, it's a distinction without a difference.

I probably needed it regardless, a cracked pelvis &^&^%%^^& hurts. So I took it even after I knew what it was, but I would have preferred to know up front, and I got off it as soon as I could. I hate how it makes me feel.

Heal fast!

"Until I needed the root canal. Then I wanted either narcs, or a bullet. OOOOWWWWWW"

+1. Dental pain is the worst. Clove oil can help in some cases. When the wisdom teeth came out, suffered dry socket syndrome. Narcs did not do squat for that. Couple drops of clove oil and I felt like a new person.

Have not broken any bones in a while, my sister and two of my downhill skiing buddies have though, and it's inspiring me to up my calcium intake.

Only thing I use for pain is paracetamol, think it's Tylenol over there.
I know it's not supposed to be good for your liver but my dad's been using them for over 50 years to control his arthritis pain, he'll be 85 come september & his liver's fine.

After I wrapped up the M2 a few years back I couldn't ride for a couple of months, wasn't sure I still had "it" so borrowed a friends bike & we went for a gentle ride round for a half hour.
He said I looked terrible for about the first 10 minutes then I relaxed & was fine knowing I still had "it".

My wife told me that she'd be happier if I didn't get another bike but she knows it's a passion so she wouldn't put me in the position of having to choose by asking me.
Can't say fairer than that.

Btw, I now have 2 Buells.

My retired next door neighbor left a few weeks ago to go on the Rout 66 tour. After the tour he rode through Northern CA and then home to NW Indiana (nice to be retired). He rides ATGATT but has always worn an open face helmet. I have been working on him for 2 years to get a full face. He final broke down before his trip and purchased a flip up.

Karma was in his favor because a rider in front of him swerved and stopped abruptly. We believe that he did a rear brake panic stop, slide and then released causing a highside landing him on his face among other things. He was only 90 Miles from home. Thankfully, he is OK but very bruised. His new helmet is shot, but he can still smile!

Acteminophin (Tylenol) is important because it is non narcotic, and you can take it with broken bones and not interfere with healing.

If you think something may be broken, don't take Ibuprofen (Advil). It interferes with bone healing, especially in the early stages...

Thanks so much for all the supportive comments. I have been off the board for a couple weeks to concentrate on healing.
I returned to (office) work yesterday, so things are moving the right way.
Have about 80% motion back, but very little strength yet in left arm.
Still sleep in a recliner due to ribs, but they are more sore now than painful.
A couple more weeks and I should be in aggressive PT mode, as I don't want to waste any more summer!
I know I hit the pavement with my shoulder (and the outer armour supports that of my Teknic jacket), but it's possible I hit the bars with the left ribs.
I try not to imagine how much worse it could have been broken if the jacket didn't have both the outside hard plastic and the inside softer armour in the shoulder.
I am confident I can be riding again in first half of August, and may even try a short ride this Saturday on one of my other bikes.
Have not even looked into ordering new bars/girps and turnsignal parts for the Uly yet.
I did have my wife drive me out to the accident scene about 3 weeks after the wreck. I found the spot (and located my missing signal lens and the handlebar insert for the left handguard!). I still am not sure what went wrong, though. Pavement looked beautiful (no gravel, no holes), and the tire mark I was told existed after the accident was long since washed away.
It was a double apex left hander going slightly uphill, but not even off camber. Not a super tricky corner by WNC standards. I did find some other busted bike parts from a Harley there!
Not sure if I will make the WV Rally now, but I sure would like to.
Thanks again for your support!

Reepi - thanks for that last post. My discharge papers said "no NSAIDS (ibuprofen", but did not say why. I thought it was just about the added stomach upset concern on top of the Rx pain meds. Good to know.
I have been off the Rx pain meds for 2 weeks now, only taking occasional acetominophen.
