I'm just looking for some feedback on USAA insurance.

My wife and I are thinking about adopting a Pitbull from one of the local rescues and they recommended USAA for our homeowners.

I did a little searching on a couple of forums (here and Jeep forum) and it looks like I should talk to them about my auto's as well.

Good, bad... I would like to hear what you have to say.

Been with USAA since getting a license. Auto, homeowners, flood. Good service overall, although flood was a huge PITA when I actually...flooded. FEMA says I have to carry flood insurance, so I have to pay premiums. USAA covered the flood repairs...through homeowners. Flood declined the claim. WTF?

And, do NOT put your motorcycles with them. They're based in TX, which has a non-discrimination law. So, they have to accept MC applicants...but they farm it out and it is NOT cheap.

Auto, though...reasonable rates, even for an 18 year old with a turbocharged car : )

I've had USAA for my autos, home, rental property and bikes over 20 years and never had a problem (except they stopped insuring bikes recently, so I'm with Flo at Progressive now), but I'd recommend them to anyone. Rates are fair and service is excellent.

It was my understanding that USAA doesn't motorcycles (maybe location dependent). When I tried to do it, they referred me to Progressive. The rates i've had through them are ok, but i guess some others don't have as good of luck.

They shunted me to somebody, I forget who, but the rates kept climbing and climbing (no change in driving record). Then when I worked at a dealer, I changed to HD insurance (who put me with Dairyland). Then when they decided to F me when my status changed from "married" to "single" (no other change at all), to the tune of a rate *increase* of $1300 a year...I called HD and asked WTF? They said "we don't work with them anymore", and changed me over to Progressive. My whole policy - which includes a full-coverage 1125CR - cost less than the *increase* that Dairyland tried to stick me with. They have me (38 single male homeowner) with the 95 S2, 98 S1W, 01 M2L, 06 Uly and 09 CR...for under $600 a year. For ALL of the bikes.

Hopefully I'll never have to report on quality of claims service... ; )

According to consumer advocate Clark Howard, USAA is not only the best insurance company, they are the best company in any realm to do business with, period.

It's as strong an endorsement as is possible, in my opinion. I plan to switch to them next week after my Geico coverage lapses.

I use USAA for homeowner's and auto insurance. Never had to file a homeowner's claim, so I can't attest to that process. They are a little more pricey for the homeowner's insurance than other's I've researched, but that may be just a random difference due to my particular location and aging home.

As for their auto insurance, I just recently had to file a claim for hail damage to my Fusion, and they made the process very easy. Of course that's the first insurance claim of any kind I've had to make, so I have nothing to compare it to..

From what I've heard, the motorcycle insurance they offer is actually through Progressive. My bikes are all insured with Progressive directly and ends up being cheaper than if I went through USAA first. I called once to ask about a multi-line discount and was told that adding a motorcycle policy wouldn't give me any discounts because "luxury vehicles" don't qualify for that discount.

I'm not to worried about the bike. Its the homeowners insurance I'm concerned about.

State Farm wont cover my dog/s if by some remote chance the get to bite someone.

If I can get a better rate on my cars & homeowners then I'm switching.

Maybe important to you, maybe not, but I can give you the perspective so far from a motorcyclist that was injured by an at fault driver who was insured by USAA. Obviously, I can't go into much detail as the story isn't over, but I can give you some good data.

Initially, they were beyond awful. In the first three weeks, they apparently found the time to contact the at fault driver, the witness, and my insurance company, but not me... nor would they return my calls.

Finally, I stopped trying to call the guy who was assigned to my case, and just escalated through their customer service line to speak with "anyone but Paul Wilkinson" about my claim. So I think I was initially just the victim of a bad apple, or some other problem invisible to my side.

What a transformation! Everyone else I have spoken with so far has been fair and helpful. We are on opposite sides of the table and this could still lead to litigation, but what told them is that as long as they are being fair and responsive I will try and work it out with them directly.

They aren't giving anything away, this is still business. But they are being very fair and very responsive so far. We have agreed on bike valuation, and salvage buyback. This is good, I went to some trouble to save them probably 3x the value of the bike by refusing the ambulance ride and taking myself to the ER after seeing the bike was transported and secured... I appreciate them returning the favor through a fair valuation.

We have not yet gotten to details on property damage (gear) or personal injury (fractured pelvis, probably a cracked rib, massive bruising, and a root canal and crown resulting from a tooth that was cracked). So it can all still go terribly wrong. But evidence so far is trending positive.

I'm not saying that if USAA is on the other side of the table from you it's all sunshine and roses and you don't need to aggressively protect yourself, you do. But so far they appear to be treating me fairly in response to me trying to treat them fairly, which is all I am asking for.

We were a direct repair facility for USAA for a while a few years back. Then an adjuster told us we'd have to quit advertising that we tried our best to obtain OEM parts for vehicle repairs from all insurance companies. We sent them packing. We still repair vehicles insured though and claimants of USAA but have dropped their direct repair program. They are a big promoter and user of aftermarket repair parts. Don't know much about the insured side of it as it relates to homeowners and liability just that I wouldn't insure my car through them.

I've been with USAA for 14 years now and the best bank, auto, renter and home insurer for a military family stateside or abroad. I advise all my troops to go with them, if they can due to their past history. They will tell you up front if they can cover you the best and cheapest. the last home I bought they told me it would be much cheaper to get a local home owners due to the rate they quoted. about $700 a year I saved by them telling to go else where.
Just this weekend my truck craped an alternator and I don't have roadside assistance but they gave me all the numbers to the local shops and offered to call one for me but at my expense. BTW They called me today and asked if I wanted that roadside due to the call on Sat.

NO BANK can match the online services for military folks that move every 3 years. the investment and retirement planning good also.

I had everything with USAA for years. Every time an insurance company would call to sell me insurance I would just say...I have USAA and they would hang up.

But this year...

I was called by my local Allstate agent and he beat USAA by $538...and I increased some areas of coverage.

The majority of the savings was from lower motorcycle rates. I insure 4 bikes.

If I wasn't such a sucker for dogs, I would just keep it all with State Farm

USAA rocks! Very respectful employees...they always manage to leave me feeling happier than when I first got on the phone. I bank and insure with USAA, don't plan on changing.

Sure, some things may be more expensive, but IMO it is worth paying that little extra to do business with a company I know cares about me and the Men and Women who fight/fought for me.

Been with them more than 20 years, have homeowners, life, auto insurance. Had a mortgage, and now have a boat loan. They are great. Sometimes too trusting, but great. Sent a check made out to me for my boat and mortgage closing. Was tempted to flee to the Caymans, but oh well...

Purchased as a bundle and got 10% off across the board.

Then the beyond nice, helpful, enthusiastic person on the other end of the line said... if you open another account with us... savings... checking... credit card we will discount it more.... So I jumped on that... my brain was/is in overload. I have NEVER had customer service like I received from USAA.
"Yes Sir"... "No Sir"... "Thank you so much for your service"... It was a wonderful change from what I am used to...

I need to call back.... I think she said I could get another discount if I set it up for auto pay on my new Master Card.... : )

FYI

My Homeowners went from $821 to $712 and I have more coverage
My autos (4) went from $754 to $496 for 6 months

I've had USAA for years and have always liked their level of service. All of our insurance (Cars, bike, home owners), credit card and our home loan is through them. We are ging to be switching our retirement funds over to them shortly as well.

I just moved all the bikes to Allstate yesterday, thanks to some helpful advice from Glitch and No_rice. I hope what pwnzor has to say about their customer service turns out to be wrong but if it's true, the $106/month I'm saving should help to ease the pain.

I've had USAA of and on since I was 16 (42 now).
Best service I have ever experienced in almost any business.
Auto rates very good for safe drivers.
Motorcycles are hit and miss depending on what state you are in. They refer you to other companies in many states (Progressive in NC) now. They told me it is because they were having a hard time keeping competitive rates with there structure.

I've had body shop owners tell me they are #1 or 2 in there book because they are willing to pay for repairs done right, with the right parts, and backed for life if you use a shop that USAA recommends.

I also have many other services (financial) and umbrellas policies with them now, and all have been top notch service. They even call me back when they find they make a mistake, or when they think my credit card # might have been compromised.

Homeowners they are not always low price, but I got an overall great deal by putting everything with them. You get lower rates as you are with them for more years, and you have more services with them.

They also have very highly rated mutual funds with no loads.I think you will be happy with the switch.
