SUCK!

I've been cruising a Raptor forum (Ford, not 4 wheeler), and it's just agonizing waiting on the pages to load. And that's with a pretty darn fast box and connection. Just spoiled, I guess.

Just another reason I love this place. Please don't ever change it, Blake!

That slowness comes with some really slick functionality. I know I've heard rumors of BadWeB going to vBulletin (which is pretty much the standard out there, now). Is there still any truth to that? Makes no difference to me, this works just fine for what we use it for.

That slowness is advertisements, pictures, and other content being loaded. You can have a modern forum with great features and not have it be a slow to load pile of crap.

The vBulletin transition has been in the works for us for ages, at one point we did have another server setup and running it.

Badweb is old, and slowly falling apart. Like a car that has driven 5 million miles and was used in a few demolition derbies, Badweb has seen better days. It has been patched together and has had some stuff like youtube jerryrigged into working, but the user and post databases are freaking huge, bigger than what anyone thought was possible back in the late 90s when it was made.

Badweb reminds of the Battlestar Galactica, I'm not sure how much more it can take before we have to retire it and send it into the sun.

Steve - you're able to turn off signatures as a user, doesn't have to be turned off for everyone.

AdWords is probably the second most annoying form of advertising ever, it would never happen here. Part of the reason most other forums are overrun with ads like full screen page covers, adwords, flash banners and such is that they are all free sites and they wh@re themselves out to pay the bills.

Sponsorship fees on here are a bit more than what they would be on other sites, but that is because the sponsors alone pay the bills here, not Google AdSence or any other junk.

Steve, with vBulliten, we can better control avatars and signatures, and then in your own options you can disable viewing them entirely if you desire.

I really like avatars on other forums. Most keep them very small, 100-150p to keep load times fast.
It's like a little piece of personal flair. It's also a great place to show off your ride.

BadWeB used to have 'em. But the story is people were "abusing" them so they were taken away.
I guess BadWeB doesn't have the capability to require admin approval for avatars like other sites. That or the admins don't want to deal with having to appove avatars all day.

I've found that forums that allow monster signatures seem to attract a crowd that I am just not that interested in hanging with

(but I never took the time to learn that I even could turn off signatures in VBulletin)

vBulletin is very configurable. It does allow you to restrict signatures to a certain size, prohibit pics, limit size of pics, so on.

It is a very powerful forum software, and it can do everything we want and still give the good old badweb feel.

Simple... just get rid of archives over five years old. What is the point of keeping all the posts ever posted on Badweb... although funny to read last night something I put up in 2002... I do not really see the point.

5 years might work for 1125 and the XBs, but it would get rid of a LOT of good info for those of us who own tubers. I have a specific thread in mind which was written in 2002.

I hate those long bs self descriptions on other sites, where in every single line response you have to look at a paragraph listing the fact that they have twelve Bikes and twenty seven other vehicles with a list of modifications(or not). Who gives a shit. I dislike that you have to carry that redundant personal crap line after line.

I like that if a person here is interested in what bikes or what ever people have to be word playing here, you can simply look at their profile. That is enough. Those in your face reminders are irritating.

Keep the KV, dump everything else over 5 years old. Give us time to flag stuff that should be in the KV but ended up on the quick board etc.

Or, and I don't know whether this is possible, close all threads over 5 years old and move them to a searchable archive outside of the board data base, but still accessible from badweatherbikers.com

>>>I hate those long bs self descriptions on other sites

I do too.

I participate, to a much lesser extent in 3 other car sites. The all use VBulletin and I find it to be an absolute pain the in the ass. It's busy, ugly and cluttered as hell.

If you want to add some "personal flair" do it with words . . .that's the way some of the fabled Badwebbers over the years have made names for themselves.

By the way . . . I am well aware that we'll have to change with time AND that my view point is heavily tempered simply as a result of the fact that THIS is what I am accustomed to.

I'm sure those of you who entered the online forum world post the old CIS, Usegroup and Discus days . . . find this software almost entertainingly archaic.

I must say with all the personalities and family squabbles that none of the forums I've seen rivals Badweb as a source of accurate information.

I'm, personally, comforted by the fact that Froggy and some of these folks are very fluent in the various available options and how best to advance our technology while retaining our flavor.

My plan is to just take Badweb, lock it, start the new site at http://www.badweatherbikers.net, import the user database, throw up a notice on the .com tell them to move their asses over, and start from scratch. The .com would still be available for searching and referencing, and it wouldn't take long for the new quickboard to fill up with politics.

Could also be done without using the .net, just use /vb/ or something similar instead of /cgibin/ and /buell/

Think of the new site as like the current crop of Camaro/Mustang/Challenger. Still has the look and feel of the clunkers you guys grew up with, but it has a motor that has more power than my cordless drill, and it won't randomly cut out and leave oil puddles in your driveway. Not to mention having AC and power windows is kinda nice : )

Froggy, Froggy, Froggy.....There is a reason you pay $40,000 for a new Camaro and the day after it is worth $28,000.

If I still had my '71 RS Camaro(that I had for nearly nine years), that I bought in '75 for $550 it would be worth well north of $40,000 even as the driver it was.

Mine had well over 400 hp out of a nasty little 327 that I built. It was the Buell airhead kind of brute power that I like. Not the sophisticated electronic buzzing power of an otherwise lifeless water cooled Suzuki. The AC and power windows worked well thank you. There was a problem with the 8 mpg. but the girls liked it just fine.

Come to think of it, the most problematic thing was the V belts. We did not have the wide flat grooved belts with spring loaded tensioners. Seems any time it hit 8000 rpms the V belts went somewhere else.

Keep in mind that a 2010 Camaro makes well over 400hp as well bone stock and gets 3 times the fuel mileage : )

Thanks for the look behind the curtain, Froggy. I am quite pleased that you have a mind to the "flavor" that many, or most here appreciate.

I don't have any problem with new technology, just with using tech for tech's sake. It needs to and should be used with intelligence and discretion to make life better. Not just more techie.

Unless that's what you enjoy, that is.

I just friggin love tech that has been designed and executed to make use simple and intuitive. THere may be some honor in "earning" the right to use a given technology, but in my mind, the whole point is to make us better, faster, stronger, more well informed, quicker to search, etc., etc. And if it's easy, that's the best of the best.

Court, I couldn't agree more. If you want to distinguish yourself, do it first with Ideas, then with Communication.

I don't block ads on sites that I use regularly. That said, I don't use sites that have too many ads to the point of being irritating.

I look at allowing the ads to display on my favorite sites as supporting those who support my free use of very useful, informative, or just plain enjoyable web sites.

I avoid pay sites, but am glad to donate or support sponsors.
