The initial TV announcemant by Obama just seemed too over the top, too 'glitzy' and too self congratulationary (is that a word?) for me. Maybe that is just the American way of coing things though.

Not the American way, just the Obama way. I forget the statistic, but it was something about how he was on TV considerably more in his first 100 days as president than any other in history. He's kind of a media .

Oh, and the word you wanted is congratulatory ; )

I have to admit that i am personally disappointed that we do not get to see the photos of Bin Ladin. However i believe that is only due to my morbid curiosity

I'm sitting beside you in that same boat.

It makes sense to me what they are doing....let the SOB disappear from the face of the planet and leave as little behind to be used as a possible memorial. The faster he fades from everyones collective memory the better the world will be.

From clinton to gore to kerry and edwards the latest democrats to win or almost win an election have a pompous holier than thou personality. Ill give bo credit though he had unconditional unprecedented ego stroking all throughout his campaign and some could argue even now. Bush acted cocky at times but he never gave me the impression he was arrogant.

I can't help but feel joy and happiness for those waiting for this day to happen. Seeing the loved ones of those fallen on that day interviewed and seeing them express thier satifaction, relief, closure, (and many other words an english major would better describe)

I also find myself happier, more content, relieved, like a weight was lifted off my shoulders... YES, without a doubt it is cause for dancing in the streets and celebrating. At least for a week. Then back to business.

I left my steel detailing position that day, a week later I was in NYC for an interview and visited GZ and took some pictures. Got hired at a great company but the commute was too much for me. While working there I was able to pick up a Tshirt from a Fire station along the walk to work. It is from Engine-1 Ladder-24, it is pretty worn but I still wear it often.

tshirt1

tshirt2

tshirt3

Watching the President Obama greet some of the people at GZ is .... a actually lovely thing. I wasn't expecting him to great so many people.

Even if they don't want to post pics of him after being shot, then atleast SOMETHING of a body going overboard. I mean ffs, you'd think there'd be something to give the nation besides the word of big brother?

far gone into lefty land.

Blake, I am far more conservative now than 20 years ago. Then I would have likely joined the "Obama is selling out to the right brigade". Now I see both you guys on the right and those on the left getting their undies all bunched up and figure he must be doing a pretty good job. I intend to vote for him again.

This board is very much on the right wing in both politics and religion and I try to stay out of the discussions as they almost never stay civil. The whole Bush is god and Obama is the devil undercurrent is not something I care to waste time debating.

Bush is no God, and has done plenty of wrong. Telling the crew of the Abraham Lincoln that they did a great job, "Mission Accomplished", was not one of them.

+1,000 What HOOT said:
Good lord. The mission accomplished banner was for the crew of the Lincoln who had just completed a 10 month deployment, the longest since Vietnam. (I left the Lincoln the day she got underway for that cruise by the way). He announced the end of MAJOR combat operations, not combat operations. Nothing premature about it.

Absolutely a great thing for the troops. Absolutely a bad PR move by Bush's handlers. Why can't anyone in politics just quietly do the right thing - why does it have to be a photo op? (rhetorical question, of course).

I understood what the banner on the carrier meant at that time, (as Hoot stated) I was dumbfounded at the stupidity the time and still am when I hear someone bring that up. How many news articles were written? How many interviews were done?? Every Efing one of them are a waste of ink/text... EVERY EFING ONE OF THEM.

To whoever started the banner frenzy...
I really do hope Karma is a bitch for them.

Me too. Except just this once...

The REAL problem with the "End of Combat Operations" thing was that there were combat operations. Whole war was sold as a search for WMDs. So where were they?? Either a massive con job, or colossal failure of intelligence, take your pick. There would be no end of pi$$ing and moaning from the BO bashers had anything of the sort come from the current administration.

Could have had OBL years sooner at Tora Bora, or elsewhere had we not been pi$$ing around in Iraq, "searching for WMDs."

For the record, I consider myself substantially 'right' of center, and only consider Bush to marginally less liberal than Obama.

I also don't align myself with anything described as religous - anything, from any faith, that is remotely mainstream is a severe bastardization of original teachings. We have people who take 'the faith' so seriously but choose to follow what, in all reality, some group of dudes decided hundreds and thousands of years after the fact. I don't get it.

Again, MAJOR combat operations were over, not combat operations. There's a distinct difference.

The Iraqi Army had been routed. The "war" was over. The insurgency was just beginning, but that's not MAJOR combat operations.

If you can't see the difference, I suspect you may suffer from BDS. : )

Pakistan to the USA regarding coming into their country unannounced; "Don't do that again!"

The US responds; "Or what? lol"

As for showing the pics of the dead Bin Laden, I think they probably should.

Tojan, if you like Obama that much we can arrange to send him there. I' just sayin...

Pictures don't matter.
The people that don't think he's dead will continue to think he's not dead.
Putting out gruesome pictures like that would sink us to the level of the people we are fighting.
In fact the fervor and celebration over this needs to be tempered a bit if you ask me.
Yes it is good he is dead. Yes we should be glad that he is dead. But dancing and singing in the street over the death of an enemy sounds like something we'd only expect from our enemies. I think we can be better than that.

Yeah, the USA! chanting is a bit embarrassing IMO.

Though cheering the death of a murderer isn't quite the same thing as cheering the deaths of the people that the murderer murdered, and that's what our enemies were doing.

Charles Krauthammer made a pretty good analogy: A man pushes a woman in front of a bus. Another man pushes her out from in front of the bus. You can't call them both men who push women around.

I have always found it strange that so many people consider Bush to be a Conservative. T'aint so and never has been t'aint so.

As for me, I am a Conservative and don't consider myself to be "right wing" or whatever that means. Conservatism means taking individual responsibility, refusal to accept victimhood, and working hard to meet your goals. I believe in Government spending money for the good of all, not redistributing it at force to those who in no way, shape, or form merit sharing what is earned from my labor.

I am a Conservative, not a Libertarian although I could care less if you choose to inject heroin into your eyeballs. This goes back to the taking responsibility thing.

I am a Conservative, not particularly religious although the complexity of DNA tells me that something strange is afoot other than random chance over a 4.5 billion year period. Heck, $4.5 billion is chump change these days.

I believe in abortion up to a point and that roughly ends after the first trimester. I listen and respect the opinion of others who uncategorically believe that it is murder after orgasm.

I am a Conservative. Why aren't you? Liberalism has set this country on a path towards destruction and enslavement virtually ever since FDR.

You vote for Obama? Sorry, but that makes you Left of Liberalism no matter how much you argue otherwise. The Community Organizer is a Socialist at best and you have fallen asleep. Or have never woken up.

agreed, Hoot.
And let me be clear. If it had been me making the call or pulling the trigge Osama would be just as dead. He was a evil mass murdering bastard.

But I couldn't help but think that it's the kind of reaction we normally look down on when we see it happening else where.

I'm sure the the country as a whole will kinda step back calm down and move on.

Mark this one down the WMDS that were found came from WHERE? China now do you really piss off the country that holds your debt and is funding the war. China will play both ends against the middle.
Remember the missiles sans war heads we found in a ship load of grain on its way to the middle east. North Korea and food they are doing what with it? Going the wrong direction one would think your sending grain to the middle east when your citizens are starving. Makes you wonder whats in the grain. Bush was the only choice I had in the General election. The demoNcrats are pure evil hiding in the guise of doing good. Or just plain Crazy either way no choice there. Obame is worse than useless he and so are his handlers he is CINC so he gets the heat. The Seals did their part every body in the spy world did theirs Thanks for all you do for us. BO and his handlers couldnt heat soup and and make to thier desks with out spilling it. THE BS IS UN REAL. They prefer lying then bsing thier way out to telling the truth and being rewarded. Absolutely useless people Blake laughs about me calling some folks Slinky people this bunch just needs to go.
