This news is a true testament to the kind of leadership we have in office now. Getting things done and making no apologies. There's no doubt our military is a much better machine when it has such good leadership and expertise. Our military deserves some credit too as they contributed as well.

They apparently recovered a significant number of documents as well, according to this article. Good news.

I wondered right after hearing the news...why are they announcing it?

It seems like they should have used intel gathered at the location to "roll up" as much of the terrorist network as possible before announcing it to the world. A couple weeks of silence as to what happened wouldn't hurt anyone.
Then again maybe having to leave the helicopter behind made that impossible.

I would say that not announcing it would have screamed of a coverup. Also if they did not announce it and a large attack was directed at us or another country we would be crucified for not giving all the information that a retaliation may be coming.

Just my 2 cents

Oh, I don't think that's too far fetched. The conspiracy theories will start soon, if they haven't already. There's no body...so he's really not dead...sheesh.

It seems like a little house cleaning in Pakistan is in order. For at least the past 10 months living in a mansion within a military complex 31 miles north of the capitol... perhaps India could re-aquire some land.

Even if they didn't anounce it, OBL's people probably knew he was dead before us anyways. You can't hide that from his people even if you wanted too.

The information that led to Osama's introduction to Navy Seal Team 6 was apparently acquired at Club Gitmo using enhanced interrogation techniques. Thanks are in order to both President George W. Bush and President Obama. Obama did make a gutsy call as this could have easily ended up like President Carter's failed mission in the Iranian desert to rescue the hostages.

Does anybody know the operational range of Chinook and Blackhawk helicopters? The estimated flight was 100 miles each way plus hover time on target. I wonder how much margin remained?

"Does anybody know the operational range of Chinook and Blackhawk helicopters?"

A long ways with extra fuel tanks. I'm not trying to be a smart @ss by not providing exact specs but I can tell you they will go quite a ways. Whomever did the direct action is very good, well rehearsed and knows how to shoot. Regardless if it was DEVGRU as reported or another "group". I'd place money on the combined actions of several lethal arms of the cool guy club.

Congrats. Thanks to the service men & women. Support and shooters. Thanks to the CIA officers who both gathered info in distant, hostile lands and interrogated terrorists to get the clues we needed. Thanks to George Bush who set in motion the freeing of 50 million people, and set the goals of fighting the leaders of the bad guys. Thanks to Barack Obama for not messing this up, and actually having a pair. ( that's sincere thanks. It would be easy to mess this up, and tempting to make points before the action. Which would mess it up ) Thanks to the planners that actually learned from mistakes in the past, like the debacle at Desert One, and sent enough transport so that they could get away even with a broken bird. ( would have been rather....tense, if they had to egress through Pakistan with borrowed trucks, or on foot. )

Go Seal Team 6.

One of the guys at work had interesting news. His Nephew was due home for Easter, since the plan was he was going to be in the sand box for July 4. He had to cancel dinner with family and run off to.....somewhere. His gig is to sit, watch, and lase. So no one notices. I wonder? I'll let you know if he was involved. ( if permitted )

I'll pick on Barry another time. After all, How can you not appreciate the genius of timing the announcement?

"Does anybody know the operational range of Chinook and Blackhawk helicopters?"

320 nautical mile combat radius for the Blackhawk.

I can't seem to find combat radius figures for the Chinook, but it's range is farther than that of a Blackhawk.

Bout time.....but they should have put his head on a pike and paraded it around for everyone to see.

Now the problem is....who will be the next demon for us to villify?...there is always someone otherwise there would be no need for government....

Good Job to those involved....

Kind of like a self fullfilling phrophesy, like our last governor proclaming a fiscal emergency, and now 11 years later..Shazam!

I was thinking that we should have burred bin laden in the new encasement for Chernobyl. It would make it really easy to track those that visited his grave site.
