Just found this on the "That'll Buff Out" blog:

Both bikes appear to be XB's. Looks like the first guy ran wide and the second guy almost followed him (a hazard of focusing on the guy in front of you).

The lead guy should try leaning into corners..he'd get round quicker and probably live a bit longer too!

WOW, don't be afraid to get your ass off the seat!! He hit the brakes mid corner, standing the bike up. Good move on avoiding the second car though.

Looks like there was a wet spot in the middle of the curve he was trying to avoid so he was riding very close to the yellow before he went wide. I wonder if he slipped on the wet spot or got on the yellow line (which may have been damp) and slipped?

Whatever, he was a lucky SOB!

I would not ride with that guy.

Someone asked the other day what I meant when I used the word STUPID.

That's a fairly good example.

The guy, if he is still alive, owes his life to pure, blind, stupid, luck.

"The guy, if he is still alive, owes his life to pure, blind, stupid, luck."

I'm living proof of that, though not necessarily due to stupid motorcycle stunts. Sometimes I wonder how I made it through my teens.

>>>I wonder how I made it through my teens.

Add me to that list . . . I've been shot 3 times, stabbed 2 times, thrown from a moving car, been through a tour in the USMC and a gig with The White House Advance Team and spent my life playing with electricity and motorcycles.

I have enough stupid people tricks to last a lifetime . . . . .

: )

Now . . . alas . . .I am old, tired and worn out.

This video kinda made me start to think.

It's obvious that the guy was a douche but......

He had so be somewhat of a decent rider to swerve and miss that second car, but at the same time his ass is glued to the seat and he is stiff as a board as well as not looking through the corner. Which would have prevented the whole debacle.

I'm wondering though if there was something on the right (out of camera view) that both riders went around just prior to the lead guy crossing the yellow.

Regardless the guy needs to get some formal riding instruction, or trade in his buell for a vespa before he hurts someone.

That's why you need to look through the turn. When you plant yourself into someone's grill, something being in your lane is a poor excuse. Just the fact that he was pushing his limits on a right hand turn with visible opposing traffic is enough to put him in the squid category IMO.

Early apexing (early turn-in) like that will often lead to running wide. It's a very bad habit, a novice mistake.

And BOTH of them about bought it. The camera rider just went back to the right after crossing the double yellow.

Doesn't look like a wet spot to me, just pavement patches.

At the end, was he pointing up to thank god for his life or what?

Like I said in the original post, that's a hazard of group rides or even just riding with another guy. You get focused on hanging with him to the point of ignoring the road. If he screws up, you follow him right into the crash. You have to make a conscious effort to stay aware of what the guy in front of you is doing, but ride your own ride.

Lots of novice issues and generally just not knowing how to ride. For example the bike is leaning (sort of), but he is trying to sit straight up.

I do a lot of group riding. Sometimes new riders will show up and they are welcome as long as they don't do any dumb moves. We usually put a seasoned rider in the sweep position to keep an eye on them.

If we see any stupid stuff like that video, their group ride will quickly turn into a solo ride far away from the rest of the group.

Hell, there's a wet spot in my pants, and I'm sitting at the computer. None of that makes sense, I'd love to hear his explanation of what happened and why.

Yeah, some riders believe their awesome handling Buells do it by themselves with little help from the rider.

I was on a group ride on my XB9S with a pack of stunters and quickly realized I was a fish out of water there. Never again.

This makes a valid reason why everyone should be spending some time on a track, and not doing stupid stuff on the street

Doesn't look like a wet spot, looks more like patched road, and he was trying to follow the clean surface. Because he wasn't looking through he sudden;y found himslef in a bad situation that at least a few good years of riding saved his butt on. I know most riders would have concentrated on that truck and because of target fixation would have been a bad outcome. Dumb going in, smart and lucky coming out.
