Just wondering what some of you think when it comes vehicle designations, specifically motorcycles. Since the intro of the 1190RS and Erik's hint at future models, I've been wondering if most would prefer actual names for the bikes, numbers, or both. I myself prefer a name. I know the numbers give you info about the bike, but it doesn't seem to conjure up images of the bike's soul and spirit! Case in point, I can't relate to virtually any of BMW's designations for their bikes or cars. They sound more like project names of prototypes and not of production vehicle. I know that whatever Erik Buell Racing does for their names, it wont keep me from adding one to the stable.

What's your preference?

Erik recently mentioned some various letter/number combos for names like RX-11, the SX-11, and the AX-11.

I like that my bikes all have both. For example: when someone asks what we ride, I ride a Buell Ulysses and Sam rides a Buell Lightning. But that doesn't really narrow it down enough when troubleshooting or looking for parts etc. I ride an XB12X, but an XT is also a Ulysses. Same with Lightning- XB9s, XB12S, XB9X, XB12Scg, XB12STT, XB12SS, etc.

Froggy, and?

Andy, I agree that there needs to be specific sub designations, but have a name for the model line, like the Uly, the Bolt, or the Barracuda. Much like the Corvette with the ZR-1, Z06, etc.. And, with the Vette it's the name Corvette that people relate to more so than which model Vette.

I think at least one model should be named the Thunderfart. I came up with that idea after eating Tina's Red Hot Beef and Bean Burritos for lunch one day.

On a related subject, I always figured the purpose of the notch in the back of the XB12S select seat was "flatulence relief":

The groove in the Select Seat?
It's a "Cooter Cooler", Erik's greatest invention.

As long as they stay away from something like 1190SUX I really don't care how they name them.

I use model designators here most times, because I know it will give readers the most detail as to what bike is being discussed. I use the terms "Uly" and "Lightning" when talking elsewhere because I know people won't have a clue what the designators mean.

My world has too many TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms) in it already.

All those numbers and letters look and sound alike.

+1,000

After the military I thought was was through with that stuff, then as I moved into IT type stuff I realized it was only getting worse.

Give me a name any day over some alpha numeric designation.

the thing about names is that it can sound kinda cheezy. not so much with #'s/initials/acronyms/abbreviations

and names take thought to get a good one that isn't allready taken and/or copywrighted

i don't mind the #'s. you can always name it yourself ...

I like names because it kinda gives the bike more soul...I mean (I hate this bike with a passion by the way) every one knows the name of the hayabusa how many people that are not really IN to bikes know what a RC8 is.

I was going to name my first born an alpha-numeric.

I decided not to have children instead.
