Do you think the single sided swing arm contributed to this? Or did it just make it more comical because it allowed the wheel to fly way.

Watching him get up with that "what the heck happened" look on his helmet was kind of comical.

I wouldn't wish that to happen to anyone, but since it did occur, it is kinda funny.

Based on this one time I've ever heard of this happening. No.
Or did it just make it more comical because it allowed the wheel to fly way.
Yes!

Probably lack of making sure it was tight?

If the wheel sheared off a standard swing arm, what then? Instead of flying away, it could jam against the frame and swing arm. Either way, the rider is going flying.

And people here wonder why I think they're NUTS to consider a racing wheel for the street. Spend $3,000 apiece on a carbon fiber wheel only to have it disintegrate after a week of riding on our lousy roads? No thank you... the heavier stock wheel is worth it to me for the piece of mind.

In the mean time, let me check the torque on the wheel fastening bolts of my K1200LT...

Stopping the video it looks like the spokes broke as there doesn't appear to be any center left in the wheel

Looks like the whole center of the rim is missing, like the rim failed not the swingarm.

The spokes on the rim failed. There were some pictures on the WERA BBS. Interesting to say the least.

Yes, it snapped off at the spokes; hence my comment regarding using anything but stock wheels on public roads... if an expensive racing wheel can shatter on a race track, I shudder to think what our local roads could do to one.
