so... even though i said i was going to sit on the money from selling my tahoe(for a pretty profit) i stumbled across an 08 chevy 2500hd extended cab regular box. 6.6 duramax turbo and allison trans. 55,000 miles, for i price that i could swing. been wanting one forever, and i wouldnt need to borrow to get it so... planning on looking at it tomorrow.

any of you have one? problems? happy with it? it would be be the first diesel ive ever owned. had a few in the family when i was younger, but never got to mess with them much.

so anything to look for?

While I don't own it (work for my father/family business) I drive a '08 Dmax, has about 72,000 on it. It's a great truck, mine is a 4-door, 6.5' box; but for this conversation, not much different from the one you are interested in. The truck I drove before this one was a '03 Dmax, 4-door, 6.5' box. The motor in the '08 is a different motor, a LMM I believe. You have to watch out for the injectors in the old ones. With the LMM you shouldn't have to worry about that. If I was going to buy a Dmax I would get a '08 or newer. You'll love it!!

I completely know what you mean. We pull trailers quite often. In my '03 we had a single stage Dr. Performance chip-a very mild chip-what a difference. My brother and I raced my old truck pulling a trailer and this '08 with an identical trailer with few hundred pounds less weight in it. We were getting on the highway and the old truck was actually gaining on the new truck. Now, the new truck has quite a bit more mid range power, but @ WOT they are a match. It would be a lot of fun to put a chip in the '08, but by no means necessary. But then, it's not necessary to have a 1125 motor in my Uly, but man would that be sweet!

Great trucks, is it a 4x4 or a 2 wheeler? If you have questions about its specs or capabilitys sent me a pm. Ive been working at a large chevy dealer for the past couple of years selling used cages. Though I am transitioning back into the mortgage business.

If memory serves 08 was rated 365 HP and it was just increased to 380, I think the difference is just in the computer tune.

A friend has one with 260k on it and it runs great, never has had any major work done on it.

Any questions pm me and I'll do my best to answer fast.

Good Luck!!

thanks guys. its a 4x4.

ive been doing alot of reading up on them. seem to be a pretty solid truck that most people dont have any problems with at all. and even the ones that have it has been minor. ive found a few that had trans problems and such, but you never know what they have done to the truck either. i know a few years back we put some tuners in a f250 and a duramax. on high setting both of them would haze the tires through every gear from a dead stop. the duramax had a 14" lift with 38's... he'd do doughnuts.

now thats not really my intention, and i know we had a problem with the fords trans from all the abuse. but never did have a problem with the chevy even though it was tweaked alot more.

although im sure i will need some exhaust or something. i love the sound of a turbo diesel. but no smoke stacks! im not that redneck!

guess we will see. going to look at it in a few.

Tim - Tim - Tim.....ye to judge one's self!

I have an '06 Ford 550 4x4 an love this ole truck. I had to fix the EGR and EGR cooler to make it a good runner though.

But that is not why I am responding to your Duramax question.

I work on a lot of 7500 series GMC trucks that have them. This particular corporate customer seems to have less problems out of them than all of the rest of their fleet's brands of engines. Just don't skimp on oil changes and all of the filter changes and you can be driving that truck way into the future. Customers who rent the trucks often always request the Duramax over the CAT for fuel mileage and power at the same time. They also idle much smoother.

Fuel mileage is all about gear ratio, wind resistance, and speed. It seems like you can rug it from a take off and not effect mileage as much as running against a headwind or trying to run too fast. My Ford, on a test run to Florida and back did on 150 mile fuel stops; 55 mph = 19.5 mpg, at 60 mph = 16.7 mpg, 65 mph = 14.0, 72 mph = 12.6 mpg, and 75+ = 10.0 mpg. This was with the 6.0, automatic, 19.5 tires, 4.88 gears, aluminum bed that was empty.

I had a new '98 Dodge Cummins, 5 spd, 2X4 that was much easier on fuel when empty, up to 22.5 mpg, but ran about the same pulling a 30+ ft fifth wheel camper, as the Ford does.

Ship shape? What does that mean? Are you putting a propane kit on it?

Careful with power adding on stock clutches. Friend years ago was drag racing and pushed his diesel over 800 ponies and toasted the clutch.

nah, not propane. although i may add a tuner, more for better mpg then power... or atleast thats what im telling myself. but yes i know i wouldnt have it cranked way up if i do get one.

starter has a little hang up to it once in awhile. as long as the fly wheel isnt to chewed up when i tear into it its not that big of a deal. well i hope, havent done o ne on this but have put alot of starters in, and a few fly wheels...

broken latch on one of the cubby holes, stuff like that. and i have to either just remove the running lights they put on the running boards, or remove the whole running board. i dont like them that much, but i hate the lights.

You will like your truck Tim. I had a 2009 and it was a great running truck. If you have an questions just ask, I'm a little Dmax buff (sent a friend request on facebook to ya). If you need a good place to buy aftermarket parts or need some good tech help talk to Tyler at Meyers Performance
http://www.meyerperformance.com/
They are in the state of Indiana, very good people!
