I am leaving Saturday morning for a Burn Burner 1500. For those who are not familiar with this, it is an Iron Butt ride that required you to ride 1500 miles in 36 hours. I have decided to do one entirely in the state of Florida. I am leaving the Tampa area and going South to Key Largo, then north to Jacksonville, then west to Pensacola, then east and south back to Tampa. It is a ride of about 1550 miles. It is my first attempt at a BB1500. I did a Saddle Sore 1000 (1000 miles in 24 hours) a couple of years ago and had planned to do one Iron Butt type ride a year, but I have had other things come up and have not made the ride a priority. I am finally getting around to doing this. I know for some long distance riders, this is a piece of cake. I think it is going to be a challenge for me, and really that is why I am doing it. My preferred riding is back roads and a more leisurely pace. This will be interstates for the most part and no time to do anything but ride. I like to test my limits though, and this is a challenge I want to take on. After this ride, I hope to do a Coast to Coast 50 next year, which is from one coast to the other in 50 hours. First though, I want to accomplish the BB1500. I know it is blasphemy here, but I am taking my FXDX on this ride. There are several reasons. One, I am tracking a suspected oil leak on my XT and don't want to ride it 1500 miles around the state until I know what is going on with that. Also, I put 9000 fun miles on my XT last year, and I really don't want to add 1500 more in a day and a half. And finally, I have my FXDX set up to be really comfortable for me. You will be fine. Unless a storm hits, it's all gravy. The hardest part will be not getting bored, and loosing focus. 36 is plenty of time to allow for short breaks. I'm sure you know what to do as you already have some experience... Have Fun! | ||

I did a SS1000 last fall and am planning on doing a FL Loop (all 4 corners of the state in 32 hours) or the CC50 this year. Have you thought about trying for the BBG (1500 in 24) and then have the Bun Burner as a fall back? My philosophy is shoot high and have a safety net if you miss. It looks like you should have great weather. Anyway, good luck, ride safe (most important), and enjoy the ride. | ||

Well, I'm leaving shortly. Say, I'm not considering going for the BBG. With the number of gas stops I have to make and going through Miami and such, I just don't think it is realistic for me. I will be happy finishing in less than the required 36 hours. The weather is looking great. My main concern right now is the evening temperatures. I know many ride in freezing weather, but I am not one of them. Riding at 50 degrees is plenty cold to me, and I know my evening ride in the panhandle may get a bit chilly, for me anyway. I did a BBG on my Uly a few years ago. Given the route you have chosen, you are probably correct in shooting for a BB. A BBG is tough to achieve unless you are on the interstate the entire route. Anyway, enjoy the ride. Long distance rides are great fun. | ||

Here's a site/group that's doing a Lap of Florida the first week of April http://www.mctourer.com/rides/2011/LapOfFlorida/in dex.html If you go to the home page, there are other rides also. The good thing about these rides is that the group provides all the witnesses, paperwork, etc. and submits the paperwork to the IBA. All you have to do is collect receipts along the route. They usually run a 50cc and a 100ccc every other year. (next year) | ||

I did one on the XT last June. It was raining on the morning of day 2 so we (there were two of us) decided not to go for the 450 miles we needed on the second (1/2) day. Ends up we actually completed it but only took credit for the SS1000. The paper is nice but the satisfaction of knowing we did it is better.... | ||

Well, I am back safe and sound and successful. I am glad I did it. Learned some as I always do. I took some photos and think I will put together a ride report, maybe tomorrow since I am off. Right now I am downloading the photos and resizing them on Photobucket. I thought there was a mass resizing tool, but I guess not and this is taking a minute. | ||

Oh, and I went to that link with the lap of Florida ride. That is a pretty serious ride. 1840 miles in either 32 or 44 hours. I don't qualify to attempt the 32 hour version and I don't think I'm up to that anyway. The 44 hour one would be challenge enough for me right now. I might try that some day. | ||

I've been thinking about doing a SS1000 on a tri-glide but it almost seems like cheating. I checked and it's a qualified "motorcycle" so I'm just waiting for the weather to warm up a bit. | ||

Dyna, something to consider for your iPhone audio wise is the Sirius XM app. I got it and it's really handy, will come in handy when the snow quits flying around here, hopefully by June. | ||

Bad, I have thought about the XM app. I thought that the online version leaves out alot of the sports though, which is one of the things I want it for. That and there is a monthly charge isn't there? What does it cost a month? I may do it, I'm just not sure how often I'll end up using it. I have also thought about the skydock which turns the iPhone into an actual sat receiver, not using the network. | ||

The app is free with an online subscription. Some of the sports stuff is missing there too. I have the skydock in the car, and that's not limited at all. If you can figure out how to set it up, the skydock may be the way to go. | ||

Yeah, I think the Skydock is what I'd want. Does it have an output that could go to my headphones? I'll have to look into that. Anyway, I finished my ride report over on ADVrider.
