What I don't get is how this is even passing, EVERYONE that I know is against this, and thats on both sides on the isle. This isn't even something debatable like abortion, it is pure constitution violating evil. | ||

I don't have an issue with most of the provisions. When law enforcement get a judge's permission to tap your phone, why shouldn't they be able to tap the phone you're using at the time, even if you switch phones? Roving wiretaps are OK in my book, and are in keeping with the spirit of the law requiring a court order to tap someone's phone. This isn't 1940. Phones are disposable. | ||

Two reasons: It is an entirely new industry worth billions, so lots of campaign contributors have a vested interest in perpetuating these programs. The gummint has to appear to be 'doing something about terrorism', so any cutback would likely result in political attack on the cut-backers. Not to mention that the NSA is building a new 1.6 Billion "data center" right down the road from here. This isn't the first time a government program is retained even after it is determined that it is a bad idea. Politicians rarely will admit they made a mistake or that their program isn't working out as promised. Orwell was right... he was just off by 20 years or so. | ||
