This is meant to be a fun thread. Don't post if you can't link a photo - it's the best part! Doesn't have to be YOUR bike, but one just like it. This is a bike forum, so bike's first, but it's been inspired by another thread which someone mentioned learning to drive on a 1965 Mustang, so if you learned on a neat car, you can post that too. I'll go first. I was taught to ride by my mom's boyfriend (at the time). I was 14 years and he bought a 1986 Suzuki DR 125 for me to ride:  For cars, I first learned, more or less, on my friends 1972 VW Super Beetle in his backyard when we were 15 or so.  But on the road it was my step mom's 1994 Mitsubishi Expo - AWD FTW! Tons of fun in the snow.  | ||

197? Yamaha GT80 My Dad still has it in the barn. It was my brothers bike and then I learned on it.. I must have been 9 or 10... Ours is silver with a purple stripe  Learned to drive in a 1974 F150 4x4 What I had looked almost like this but mine was white. The one in the picture is a 1978. Mine looked like that because a high speed off road excursion that I went on. We replaced the front end with a 78 front end.... the things I did in that truck. If I ever win the lotto, I'll have another It had a 390 with headers and glass packs, 4 on the floor.... remember the vents you would open by you leg.. all the leaves would come flying in... the high/low beam switch on the floor... it also had a sun roof  | ||

Borrowed this from my father-in-law for 3 months prior to getting my Ss:  Had one of these back in high school as my first car. Not mine in the pic, but same tires. Probably not the best thing to learn on and survive, but I did!  ~SM | ||

The bike I learned to ride on, 1970 Honda Trail 90, ours was all yeallow w/o the silver. My brother and I beat the crap out of that thing and after the first summer probably spent as much time working on it as riding it. To a ten and twelve year old it was heaven on earth.  The car I learned to drive with, 1978 Honda Accord Hatchback LX,5 speed, same color as shown, 1500cc engine or there about with something like 65hp. Kinda funny looking back at it now and thinking that my current Raider has 1900cc and around 100hp. I LOVED that car though because it meant freedom from home. 50cc Garelli two stroke. I'd call it a red italian beauty, but frankly it was a piece of crap. Spent more time fixing it then riding it. I'd steal Slaughters line about "that bike and I spent all summer dreaming up interesting ways to try and kill each other", except that the Garelli was harmless, so at best it was more of a passive aggressive sullen victim. I'll bite. First bike I rode was an old 1960's Bridgestone TMX100. It belonged to my cousin.  My first car (my older sisters really) was a 1965 Dodge Dart with a slant 6 and 3 on the tree. I can't really remember the first car I "drove", as long as I can remember, my Dad used to put me on his lap and let me steer. I do remember doing that on a 1964 406 Ford Galaxy ( factory 3 deuce carb set up, 4 on the floor, 4.11 rear end). I also remember driving the 1965 Shelby GT around the neighborhood in about 1968 or 9. Times were WAY different back then.  | ||

 That's not my photo; I don't seem to have any pictures of the bike so I pulled this one off some random internet site. 1982 Yamaha XJ550RJ, purchased brand new. Probably the WORST "First Bike" I could've chosen due to its SUPER peaky power band but it sure looked hot. Didn't quite make it to 10,000 miles before an idiot in the neighborhood pulled right out from the curb and slammed into me as I was riding down the road. I swore then I'd never get another motorcycle as they were too dangerous. We see how much that oath meant... | ||

That rack on the back was NOT meant to be a seat! You got that right, and I got more than my share of bumps and bruises from it. My brother and I would try to bounce/throw the other one off the back when driving cause riding double was too slow. Low hanging branches in the apple orchard, bumps, ruts, whatever else we could find, it was all fair game when trying to get the other one off the back. | ||

A go cart kinda like this is how I learned that I had a need for speed. It was hard to stay in the seat and I can't tell you how many times I rolled that thing.  ... and something like this was my very first 2 wheeler... HIT THE GAS AND GO!!  | ||

Not an actual pic, but my first car...I worked the summer of my 15th year, saved 122 bux...dad kicked in the other 78 bux to buy it...the mighty Opel Kadett with the tire smoking, punishing 1,000cc monster 4 banger...it was slow and ugly and leaked water inside when it rained, but it was MINE...and I could keep it fueled with my tip money from bagging groceries...   | ||

ok ill break the old trend LOL well i guess the FIRST time i rode a motorcycle by myself was when i was REALLY young (like 4/5) and my dad borrowed his friends early 90's yamaha 50, and put training wheels on it, well i ran into the house to many times so that didnt last long LOL (sorry no pic) then the first time i REALLY rode a motorcycle by myself with no assistance was right after i past my motorcycle safety course and my dad let me ride his 2007 HD Street Glide (yes i know HD, but it really is a nice bike)  then for the first time i actually drove a car (truck) was my dads 400$ 1979 Ford f150 with a 2barrel 302, and a c4 transmission that the linkage broke in, so my dad had to cut a whole in the floor and put the shifter on the floor lol but it made it across the USA about 6 times and never skipped a beat...and it was from the midwest so it was basically solid RUST (oxymoron?) it was so bad that we were comin down a mountain dirt road and the bed bounced OFF of the truck so we had to rachet strap and bungie cord it back home for the next 35 miles HAHAHA it looked like this, just ALOT rougher haha  also learned how to drive in his 68' plyomouth fury 3 with a 2 barrel 383, first car time i ever went over 100mph was in that car lol looked like this, just a little rougher paint wise lol  and my very first motorcycle of my own was/is my 2008 BUELL 1125r (yes many dont agree with my decision but after 2.5 years im still here lol)  Jake | ||

I learned on one of these. (Stock photo, I'm afraid. The one I learned on looked nothing like this. We rode it in gravel pits and thru woodland.)  My first real road bike. When I turned 16, dad never saw his bike again...  Except when I first got hold of it, it had awful looking huge white saddle bags, a tall padded sissy bar, goofy raised handle-bars, and a windshield. My first crash took care of all that.  It had almost as much HP as the car I was allotted, my friends dubbed it "The Peace-Wagon" ...  Except the one I drove was rusted in spots and patched with rivets and sheet metal. | ||

Danger Dave..You had the same minibike I had.Blake.....You did nothing to the motor in your squareback....'cause mine would pull wheelies.That was a fun car.I remember spending days on the combustion chambers & assembling the engine in my bed room & Daddy helping me carry it down the hall & out to the garage.I can remember the engine gasket set was $1.80 back in 1977.A set of cylinder/pistons,rings,& wrist pins was $ 45.I wish I still had it. | ||

Below is my first ride (the mini bike) when I was 10 years old. I would ride that thing non stop. I do not recall what we did with it except it was replaced with a Moto Beta (Below as well). Many more to come! Every now and again the shifter would lock. The dealer showed me how to pick up the back of the bike and drop to dislodge something in the tranny. Worked for me back then.   | ||

Started on a 1970 Honda CT70 ...  And driving was in Dad's 'Pumpkinmobile' ... a 1972 VW Camper ... orange, with a big pumpkin stitched on the spare tire cover mounted on the front.  I used to get alot of $41t from folks for driving the orange van ... until everyone realized that they had reclining buckets to entertain dates, while I had a fold out double bed.  | ||
