An Iranian nuclear scientist has been killed and another injured in separate attacks in Tehran today.

The scientists were targeted in two different locations by men riding motorcycles who attached bombs to their car windows as they drove to work.

One device killed Dr Majid Shahriari, a member of the nuclear engineering faculty at the Tehran University, and wounded his wife.

The second blast seriously wounded nuclear physicist Dr Fereidoun Abbasi. His wife was also injured.

Iran's nuclear chief, Ali Akbar Salehi, said Dr Shahriari was involved in a major project at the country's chief nuclear agency, though he did not give specifics.

State television swiftly blamed Israel for the attacks.

At least two other Iranian nuclear scientists have been killed in recent years in what Iran has alleged is part of a covert attempt by the West to damage its controversial nuclear program.

Would not put it past the Israelis.

Would not blame them either. Would/do support their action(s). Thought about moving there, but their immigration laws are too tough. I have no wish to convert.

In the old days I would guess this would have happened awhile ago. Same with that Wikileaks guy. I'm sure he would have been offed not too long after the first release.

But hey, we're a kindler gentler nation now.

Sounds similar to the fate suffered by many US/Western microbiologists in recent years.

Didn't have to be Israel. Saudi Arabia is not happy with Iran going nuclear. Could by other forces as well.

I disagree. How will the leaks REALLY hurts us? What are we going to really loose? What?, piss off people who hate us already?

Sounds like a somebody's way to say what's really on their and others mind's, then be able to blame someone else for it. The Admin will use this for all it's worth.

Including taking more rights away. - In this way I agree. The leaks will hurt U.S. citizens. The damage will be done by our own government.

I'd not be one bit surprised if the wikileaking is directed by us.

So when out native dialect speakers are outed and killed and we cant properly project and protect then what? How does this hurt us? Maybe this has zero effect on you. Hopefully this will have zero effect on anyone you know. If some of the local Pashtun that help us (the deployed military) are broadcasted you could have entire generations of families killed by the Taliban or AQ. Weapons stockpiles and IED are frequently reported by those who go out on a limb to help us help them. Some have been given monetary rewards and even a few could become US citizens. They wont see another sunrise when this all breaks. Hearts and minds will evaporate and then its gets bloody as hell. If you have a friend, brother, sister, mom, dad or neighbor deployed right now you want everything to remain calm and secure.

The issue is that when allies supply us with information they expect us to keep their secret. That secret includes their identity and the nature of the information transferred.

What nation or individual is going to take a chance on confiding in the US when we can't secure our data flow?

You don't tell a gossip anything you want to keep between the two of you.

The danger to us is that we lose our eyes and ears. We lose the support of nations that want to keep that support secret (think Pakistan). Wikileaks has effectively closed our back channel capabilities.

But I've not seen any information yet that would lead me to think that any serious information from valued informants has been revealed. None of it rises to the level of serious concern. Did I miss something? These are inter-agency cables reporting to home, not top secret intelligence reporting.

I guess what I'm saying is that it seems more like a way to push the US position in a way that avoids the credibility gap left, whether rightly or wrongly, after the Iraq WMD issue. Everyone will believe what comes from wikileaks as they are just sharing leaked information for the good of the world; or are they?

I wonder what the window-side of the bombs looked like, a smily face, and ad for headache medicine, a picture of muhammed, ... ?

The guy is an idiot. I wonder what the Kremlin does to stop things they don't want our? Oh wait I think the assassinate people.

The guy is playing with fire.

As far as how damaging these are? The world of diplomacy is built on facades. You may think I am an idiot but you outwardly treat me as a respected partner so I can give you something you want without giving my enemies a weapon. If you have publically called me an idiot I may be less inclined to do that.

Mostly I don't see the point of these. The US spies on it's allies? This is news and some sort of moral outrage is expected? Why?

There are some names mentioned of people who passed on unflattering descriptions of their rulers to our folks. I suspect that may be considered a bad thin in China or Iran.
