Been following the reports of the bombs from Yemen. There is a lot of discussion as to whether the targets were the addressees in Chicago or the aircraft they were carried on. My question is where was the common sense component? I mean, why would anyone pay the international shipping charges to send a toner cartridge from Yemen to Chicago? Shouldn't that have raised some suspicion> I don't know what kind of inspection process these packages undergo but I'm hoping it's going to be improved in the future.

What do you think?

Its a scalability problem. How do you check everything (millions of packages a day) without either spending a fortune, or bringing everything to a grinding halt. And the threat is adaptive, so as soon as you set up a set of rules for what you can't send, the attackers just adapt.

When you get right down to it, stopping the terrorists is really the only viable plan (which, unfortunately, in the short term probably means killing them).

It does seem like Yemen is doing it's part. Instead of ranting about the imperialist heathens and how we all deserve to die anyway, they are investigating and making arrests.

This has been blown (sic) out of all proportion in my view.

This 'so called' terrorist expert has allegedly been behind two failed explosion attempts so far and both have been ludicrously amateur in planning and execution.

Surely somebody should have realised that sending parcels from Yemen addresses to Jewish religious centres in the USA would arise suspicion? No? OK lets put our real telephone number on the shipping paperwork so we can ve arrested within hours of the plot failing.

However they have already succeeded in their aim if we all panic and introduce another raft of stupid knee jerk security proposals and procedures like we usually do, and if we spend countless hours giving them air time on national media these pathetic groups get priceless coverage and propaganda.

Don't let these idots ruin our lives! Carry on as normal

Precisely why the "secure our borders and leave the rest of the world to fester" won't work. We must destroy them where they are so that they can't touch us from whatever cave they are hiding in.

I like the idea of 1 bomb for 1 bomb.
They main 1 bomb fedex, and we deliver 1 ICBM to the exact gps position of where the package was mailed from.

We want to reduce our nuke stock pile, and using them is cheaper then recycling/ disposal.

All it takes is 1 use for counties know that if you harbor terrorists your country will be wiped off the map.

Unfortunately the reality is that most of the 'top shelf' terrorists are actually Saudi Arabian 'ex pats' who have moved to failing states such as Afghanistan, Yemen and Sudan in order to avoid detection. As Saudi is our 'friend' we don't like to mention this in case they won't sell us any more oil, so we ignore their wholesale export of Islamic fundamentalism in exchange for a few more gallons of gas : ( Ho Hum.

If we stopped reporting every single incidence of 'terrorism' it would probably stop of its own accord eventually. Givig these people air time is what they want, whether the bomb actually explodes or not.

Hmmm. So we nuke the folks working at the Yemeni version of "The UPS Store"?

Not sure killing a few hundred thousand innocent folks that had nothing to do with the terrorists will make us the winner. Or any better.

There are, according to experts best estimates, around 200-300 'terrorists' holed up in Yemen inside the tribal lands where the government is pretty much useless.

Bombing Yemen won't make any difference to these people, and if it gets too hot for them there they will just got to another failing state such as Sudan or Somalia. The Yemeni government has been trying to get the west to help them with anti terrorist equipment (airport scanners etc) for months without any real progress, so until we adjust our thinking and start helping struggling governments rather than bombing populations nothing will change : (

The knee jerk reactions and unutterably stupid legislation has already started to creep in and affect the lives of 'normal' people as a result of this ridiculous 'attack'.

I was informed yesterday by Royal Mail that it is now illegal so send printer/toner cartridges in excess of 500gm weight by air mail. Obviously this piece of ludicrously rushed and ill advised legislation will cripple any would be terrorists straight away as they won't be able to think of any other item to disguise a bomb, (drat foiled again Muttley...).

Next time they'll use a mobile phone/I Pod/AN Other electrical device and so on until it will illegal to ship anything anywhere : (

Maybe we will all get as bad as the Greek governemnt, who this week banned ALL air mail packages from entering the country (seriously!) which is plainly just rolling over and surrendering to half baked terrorists before anything even happens.

How are businesses like ours who ship worldwide going to manage this? Carry on as normal and F***K 'em that's how ; )

Dunno what make of printer it was, but if it was HP I can understand wanting to blow it up. Would have been better to do it in his own back yard though.

So, if we threaten to blow up the origin of the bomb, or God forbid actually do it, the next step is the terrorists just send the bomb from their own enemy's location.

Come on, who could possibly think this would really work? These people WANT to die. They also WANT publicity. We need to take away the things they WANT.

Get it?

Author Ing's basic premise is to never discuss on the news the cause of terrorists, always mock them for fools, and incompetent, and give them an insulting name. Without the adulation of their peers, they get no happy feedback to want to go on Jihad. No romance, no cheers, ever shown on the news.

"Soft Targets" is a novel, so how well it would work in the real world is a good question.

I'd jam and mock all the happy kill yourself children shows in the mid-east, even if I had to bomb the tv & radio stations. Nothing but european commercials with naked women having lesbian sex to sell orange juice. ( Thank you "Eurotrip" ) Hey, I'd tune in.

I have an elegant solution to the problem.

Step one.
Recruit the fanatics with promises that they can kill westerners & the necessary explosives to do so.

Step two.
Take groups of repeat offender child molesters & rapists.

Step three.
Take 'em all out to a remote location....

Can you see where I'm going with this?

It's a result for everybody & cost effective too, in these straightened times.
