A couple months ago my dad bought an 05 883 custom for some reason, have no idea why. I had just put some risers on my uly and was riding around the yard and up the road checking out my bar position. He's been trying to get me to ride this thing for a while, telling me how good it handled. His other bike is an ultra BTW. He rode it up the road and back and of course said take it up the road so I did.

Impressions.
Man this things loud, sounds like a built rail buggy.
Why are the pegs way out there?
Why am I making so much noise and going so slow?
Are the tires flat?
Where did all these bumps in the road come from?
Is it going to go around this curve or not?
Good thing the compression braking is good.
Are you sure the tires aren't flat?

That is all, just thought I would share.

883 Sporty is a bit of a dog... all blow and no go.

Got a buddy that rides one, custom pipes and fuel map. It makes all kinds of sound, like a much bigger bike. At the end of the day it's still a gutless turd.

Would it be such a turd if it was hacked into a cafe style machine? Still be gutless, but at least it would look different.

Yjsrule - I had a Sporty as a courtesy bike from the dealer last time my bike was serviced and had pretty much exactly the same thoughts! What's with the footpeg position??? : D

I have my bike booked in for some work next week and asked if I get one of the BMW F800's they have, but no dice : (

"...if it was hacked into a cafe style machine? Still be gutless, but at least it would look different."
I'd still like to do that one day (among a million other ideas), if I could pick a Sportster really cheap.

I had a cafe sportster. You better do it as a styling exercise and because you want to actually make it perform. After sinking all kinds of money into mine already, I walked up to the parts counter at the HD dealer - the guy that worked there was into these kinds of bikes - to ask about any more suspension upgrades. His response was, "Man, you should have just bought a Buell." So after that, I did!

BTW - my friend has an '07 883 and I actually kind of like it. Not all bikes have to be fast.

"Another Sportster kicking party. It has been about a month since the last one."

The name itself is an oxymoron. Just an observation.

Imagine you are the fattest kid in school... and your last name was "Skinny". That would lead to some bad childhood memories if the kid didn't have tough skin.

OK so go with the Yamazuki single or something of that sort for a cafe. Again, not too concerned about fast or even too much of quick, if I want that I can always take my 9R out for a spin. Something in the 50 or so horse power range just to have something different. It would be nice to have it be light though which sort of rules out a Sporty motor.

All that said if someone gave me an XR1200 I would probably find a way to like it unless it was costing me all sorts of repair money. Kind of like the way the XR looks.

Quote from my girlfriend during the AMA XR1200 races this weekend; "Are these guys going the same speed as the sportbikes? They look so slow."

I could be wrong but it might be an old iron head sportster. Those look like some wicked custom headers barely poking down into the picture.

yep, it's a really old sporty, notice the cam cover

I'd say that if somebody is complaining about the performance of their sportster, the flaw was in their purchase selection process, not with the bike.

I didn't expect it to be fast, but I expected it to handle better. Maybe it was the big front wheel, I dont know

I do think it and a KLR would be a good drag race, in the twisties a KLR would eat the sporty for lunch.

I rode my first sporty about fifty years ago.

Scared the crap out of me. I was probably riding a Norton at the time, or maybe my Ducati.

Seemed to me like a slow, ill handling, and crude device with crappy brakes and no suspension.

Funny thing is, some fifty years later, I'm still riding a Ducati, which managed to pick up about a hundred horsepower and a quite a few world championships.

The Sporty doesn't seem to have changed that much,
does it?

Anybody else think the original shovel head is cooler looking?

Bold new graphics? The bike looks virtually the same. 1960's technology at 2010 prices. *Wait... is the 2010 fuel injected?*

Well I like having my 06 Sportster 883R keeping my 1125R company in the garage, does help my Sportster is in the 90s bhp though, by the way there is no such thing as a "shovel head" sportster, it's an "iron head". Shovel was a big twin engine.
Different bikes for different uses, I love and enjoy them both.

no look into the bike I posted more closley the one in that link has an xr-1000 top end that regular xlcr does not. I asked him about the bike and this was the response I got on it.

Firebolt1901, It's not a problem, because I really enjoy talking about this bike. Yes, I totally agree that this is what the CR should have been from the factory. The engine is the numbers matching one for the 1977 XLCR frame that it sits in, and as the VIN indicates, it was number 118 off the line. Yup, it'a a real one. That's why I spent ssoo much on the motor. I didn't take the easy way out and just go buy an XR-1000 motor, and throw it in. Nope, not me, I had to have someone (Zippers) make the original motor into an XR motor. It's now a Work of Art, that can be ridden, lol. Thanks for your interest in my Baby. Doug

Anybody else think the original shovel head is cooler looking?

Items that are not stock:
mufflers
seat
mirrors
front fender (chopped)
gas tank (frisco mounted)
air cleaner
lots of extra chrome (eyebrow, brake hubs, etc)
shifter

I also owned a 2004 and a 1964 Sportster. Anyone who thinks they are the same technology or have hardly changed is grossly ignorant.

I confess that when I bought my XLCR it was intended to be a collector piece and I ended up riding it nearly daily.

It excelled at nothing in particular but I really enjoyed riding it.

That's a good thing in a motorcycle.
