The turbo might reduce the exhaust dB to a level that would eliminate the need of the additional side mounted muffler. I don't think he meant you wouldn't need a muffler at all.

Looked to me like the the ZTL braking system was on board the RS. I would hate to see a dual disc setup personally.

Sounds like a turbo, looks like there is alot of fairing covering the engine, the turbo could be mounted forward and under the engine, or under the front cylinder. It looks like there is an exhause pipe from the rear cylinder going almost horizontal towards the front.

Either way it comes out, it is coming out!
Congratulations Erik Buell Racing! Much Success
Happy us!

The turbo suggestion was a joke, and a jab at HD for killing the turbo XB9.

Why would Erik Buell Racing put a turbo on a bike that they're trying to race in a series that doesn't allow turbos? AMA doesn't allow turbos right?

Just a guess on my part, but could there be a patent infringement by running the under slung 1125 exhaust?

Looking at all the copycat exhausts in the last few years, I would think Erik Buell Racing could skirt around the patent infringement like the rest of the manufacturers.

The 1190rs is massively cool, it should have giant killer power, and we all know the handling will be world class....but it is not "all new".

I sincerely hope that enough are assembled and sold to gain the attention of quality investors or at the very least for a company to incorporate Erik Buell Racing as a new models and/or research division and use the vision gained to move forward.

It takes MEGABUX to go where Erik Buell Racing wants to go and a cooperative vision to get there.

I'll wait for the 595 to come along. In the meantime, I'll make do with what I have and hope I can keep it running until then.

If called upon, I would gladly volunteer as a TTD tester. : )

First lets state the facts:

1. its based off the B2 which is 1125R based
therefore we can assume:
2, Rotax engine
3. new muffler
4. no pods
5. belly pan and full front fairing
6. smaller front fairing than 1125R

those are the facts, here are the rumors and speculations:

1. the rotax is most likely a modified engine rather than made from scratch. I believe this because A. the rotax engine contract Buell (the company) probably wasn't complete when harley ended buell, so HD (buell the company) had to pay X amount of dollars or pay for X amount of engines. since this bike is clearly a modification of the 1125R i'm guessing Harley paid for X amount of engines and is "letting" Erik use them to support his racing efforts. one can imagine all the legal issues surrounding this arrangement.

2. there is little development effort left (other than the muffler since its different) so the biggest issue is for Erik to find suppliers and a work force to build said bike. remember he doesn't have his factory any more, just a small shop. Other than the Rotax engine i don't think he is using HD's parts bin to build bikes, he needs someone to build the frame and everything else he can borrow from the 1125R and then he has to find ways to fabricate all the custom parts, swing arm, body panels (molds for new plastic body panels are expensive) Muffler, etc etc.

Beyond that there's all the little details which he's familiar with but he needs someone to still do, dealer network?, 50 state legal status, paperwork, setting up a support network or system, etc etc.

Erik has a mountain to climb, but its one he has climbed before and I sure hope he has enough left in him to climb it again.

3. because he is going to sell this heavily modified 1125R, HD is letting him do that, my guess is that there is a time limit on this, within that time limit, ERik has to A, find a company (Rotax?) to support him and get him out of the legal issue by buying the rights Erik is using from HD. B come up with a completely new design which doesn't infringe on said patents HD now owns

of course this is all speculations by me, the truth is probably more complicated than I can imagine

There's a few more facts available, straight from the Erik Buell Racing website.

quote:

The 1190RR models are constructed at our shop from new 1125Rs with a complete kit of Superbike level components. Engines are completely disassembled and blueprinted, with top-shelf internal parts added to deliver reliable performance at the extreme rev ranges required for a twin-cylinder bike to compete at these power levels.

The chassis is completely updated with the finest components, as well as all the details for adjustability and comfort requested by the top test riders who have been involved over its development.

It's still built from 1125's. Starts with the same engine and same frame. The street version may very well be little more that a big bore 1125r with new bodywork. Not that that's a bad thing, in fact it sounds like a great step to me. I just don't understand the pie in the sky speculation. We pretty much know what the 1190RR is. This is a street version of that bike.

This will limit production numbers due to availability of 1125R bikes that can be used as donors. It also opens the possibility of upgrade kits for your personal 1125R's. Now you can speculate.

I still fail to see the obsession with "HD ownership" and if the B2 was created "under HD" then "what does it mean?".

HD hasn't designed a Buell in what...EVER???

Court - please chime in here if I'm off base, but the way I understand it, Buells were all conceived, tested, and built in East Troy.

All HD did was write the checks (and CASH the checks). Think "rich uncle".

Yes, they may own some of the copyright rights...but at this point, are they going to worry about stuff like that? Or do they have bigger things to worry about at the moment?

Is Erik going to be smart enough to keep the core componentry and engineering (the stuff that he's PROVEN to work), while making it "different" enough to keep out of infringement territory? Look at the B2's front wheel - does hollow spoke construction change things enough to make ZTL2 (2.5? 3?) free of "intellectual property" issues? I bet, somewhere, there's a loophole (or a bunch of 'em)...and somebody knows exactly where it is.

These are a smart bunch. Personally...I can't WAIT. This is gonna be GOOD : )

I think the fella who wrote those patents would know where the loopholes are.

IIRC the B2 had side mounted radiators.

I will admit that I dont like the exhaust but most of us will be hacking that off anyway. I am glad that it still has the ZTL. I was worried about the patents on that.Looking forward to part 2

In a related vein, someone in another thread noticed Erik Buell Racing is advertising replacement oil filters for the Rotax engines for $320 (yep, three hundred and twenty dollars). Here's a link to the filter listing: http://www.EBRacing.com/shop/product160.html

Here's the description of that oil filter from the website:

This is the ultimate in stock oil filters (it’s a stock replacement filter). A cartridge type just like the one in your bike. We use them in the 1190RR and soon to be released 1190RS. At $320 get a piece of history before the 1190RS is revealed to the public.

I'm a function over form person. Never minded the pods, the muffler, etc....they worked.

What I'm interested in is two things:

1) Performance (not just shear speed, but easy of use as well)
2) Price

There is no use for my getting excited about a bike that I'm sure will meet criteria #1, but it's not affordable.

The cherry on top of this treat would be if the bike clocked in under $12,000.

If it's less than $12,000, we all win. : D

I don't think I've seen this in this thread yet... Off Erik's facebook page:

Tim Mcgee "1190RS how are you gonna get HD to approve this?? I know you got something up your sleeve. : )"

Erik Buell "Erik Buell Racing is a separate company, not a division of H-D, and I do not work for H-D, so there is no question of approval. The new bike does not violate any H-D owned patents, so there is no need to get licenses, etc. approved. H-D is not engaged in any way, and are on a different path completely, on which I wish them the best success. I and Erik Buell Racing are free to do new American sportbikes. Nothing up any sleeves"

The only way Erik is free and clear of HD is if the B2 was developed and funded outside of Buell. Am I right?

Wouldn't be awesome news to learn that the B2 was skunkwork

All I would like to say is that I will be going to bed and have some sweet dreams about the new 1190RS. Change is great whether a redesigned exhaust or that seat that makes the bike look like it is going 1190mph. Fantastic job Erik Buell Racing.
