Yes, I'm a coin nerd. Will trade round, old pieces of metal for Buell parts. Just received one of these in change today, displaying the new permanent reverse (after one year of rotating Lincoln anniversary designs): What do you all think about it? |

Retro looking. I got a wheat penny in change the other day....hmm, wonder where I put that. I think it was from the 40's? |

I've been able to find a few of these recently as well. It is very cool to find them 'in the wild'. |

<rant> I think the government should stop wasting my money redesigning coins that no one uses. It costs more than a penny to make a penny. </rant> |

My grandfather died recently. He had several hundred dollars worth of pennies in an old toolbox, many of them from the 20s and 30s. They're worth exactly 1 cent each. We dumped them off at the bank. We kept the steel WW2 pennies just for sentimental reasons. They're worth a penny each too. |

I want to know why the dollar is the only bill that still has not been updated. |

Hoot, thanks for planting all those cherry-picks! If nothing else, a bunch of kids will get a kick out of finding them in pocket change. I think the $1 bill hasn't been updated because (speaking to Hoot's rant) it would be too expensive. Hardly anyone counterfeits a $1 these days. |

"Hoot, thanks for planting all those cherry-picks! If nothing else, a bunch of kids will get a kick out of finding them in pocket change." The bank said all the money they get in change form gets returned to the fed. Not sure what happens to it after that. The paper money that goes back gets burned. |

"Hardly anyone counterfeits a $1 these days." And that's why I don't understand the coin redesigns. No one counterfeits coins. They've changed the 10 and 20 so many times in the last few years I can't tell what's real and what's Monopoly money. I used to look at my money...these days I just smile and take my change and hope I can pass it off to the next unsuspecting fool. |

You should have weighed the pennies. I think the old copper ones are worth more as copper than pennies. |

They are, but selling them as scrap would be defacing currency, and the legal problems aren't worth the hassle. Don't think we didn't think about it though. |

the coin redesigns are because it costs more to mint it and press it than the value of the copper in it.... thus the new penny is not all copper and the quarter, and dime have been sammiches since the 60's. It all doesnt bode well. Neither does the off trading of gold for the Bangalors that is happening in the currency market. We became third world in the last 5 years. Turn Lady Liberty around, we are now the tired, poor huddled masses yearning for freedom... |

Cut a little scar on the edge of a penny and soak it in hydrochloric acid. Thru the scar,it eats the zinc and you have a perfect shell of the copper SO thin you can't hardly handle it. |

You don't have to redesign a coin to strike it from another material. Just sayin'. |

My company is about as right-wing, hands-off-our-profits, don't-tell-us-what-to-do as you can get. But in their health insurance benefits, they have assigned employees an insurance company nanny. We have to give the nanny our cholesterol levels, blood test results and take a health survey and talk to insurance company health coaches in order to receive our benefits. We could always opt not to be covered, though. Funny. One man's socialism is another man's cost-saving measure. Uh, that has nothing to do with coins and currency, does it? Curse you CityX, you thread-jacked my brain again. (Message edited by Rainman on September 15, 2010) |

Ironically, I've read the new shield design is intended to convey the national cohesiveness Lincoln fostered. 13 bars under a motto of "unity." Lest we forget... I personally chafe at the mishmash of fonts used on this coin. Four disparate fonts in total on both sides makes the design appear thrown-together. |

>>> Funny. One man's socialism is another man's cost-saving measure. You are missing the point. You can change employers, or even the state in which you reside a LOT easier than you can change nations. The political level at which nanny resides makes a HUGE difference. The more concentrated the power, the more money is involved, the more corruption, the more inefficiency... the more TYRANNY. |

Actually, that wasn't the point. You're right, of course, it's easier to change jobs than countries. At this point, I can't afford to do either despite my three jobs. I do find it humorous that the far right, highly ideological owners have no problem imposing on their employees the type of burdens they oppose at the political level -- which they would label socialism -- while using the exact same rationale for their own impositions. I, by the way, am also opposed to the burdens both as an employee and a citizen as I find them socialistic and, worse, paternalistic. Never did do authority well. Probably explains my Libertarian bent. |

That blind enhanced money will go GREAT with drive up ATM machines that "have to have" the Braille buttons. What do all the treasury folks do when they aren't designing new money? With modern CAD and the like..........it can't involve a lot of productive time use of a 40 hour week. |
