http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/g8-g20/o pinion/police-state-%20%20in-power-suits-out-as-to ronto-goes-into-security-shock/article1612636/

At a downtown law firm, lawyers were told to leave their suits and high heels at home and dress casual-like to avoid being set upon by anti-capitalist rioters......
.....“If you unexpectedly encounter demonstrators,” a city landlords’ group advises tenants, “you will be better treated if you are in jeans and a casual shirt than if you are in a business ‘power suit.’ ” Other tips: don’t rub your eyes if you are tear gassed or pepper sprayed; and don’t wear your security pass on a lanyard around your neck – the bad guys might pull it off and abscond with it.

I'm starting to wonder if the violent protesters should be, what's that word? Ah! arrested?

It sucks that a fine city be in fear because of professional trouble makers. I don't care what your political ideology is, if violent attacks are your way, you are wrong. I'm sort of automatically against you, since you violate the warriors code.

Not that I'm without some sympathy for the "small people" who I suspect won't be on the agenda at the G20. But I'm cynical.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-06-24/man-arres ted-outside-of-toronto-g-20-zone-after-traffic-sto p-finds-weapons.html

...The items included a chain saw, axe handle, sticks and fuel containers,...

Guys? My van might have that on any given day. What good is the Chain saw without fuel? Sticks??? Holy cow! What else? A ROCK???

Not nearly enough data here to make a judgment. I'm guessing the extra security has led to otherwise normal people getting busted there. Or, could be the violent types that flock to these things. You realize, someone has to pay for all these people to go protest.

I won't even pick on the massive budget to "promote" Ontario & Canada. Like any news reporter is going to report on the wonderful exhibits when there's jerks with Che' shirts throwing rocks.

Good luck guys.

Oh yeah, remember when the leader of something-or-other-istan was assassinated by 45 year old man with a chain saw/axe/handle/stick?

What a joke.

Chainsaw=needs fuel. Axe handle? Sticks? Canada? He's obviously a lumberjack

Any bets on whether the violent anarchists setting things on fire up there will make the news, or just the fact that the police are handing out tear gas to people who believe passionately in their cause? My money is on the latter. Mostly because their cause and that of the press is the same.

The hockey masked, chainsaw wielding fiend in movies has a ring of truth. Darn things can kick back when used improperly. You really want face protection.

Just saying.

http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/Secret+lets+poli ce+arrest+failing+show+near+summit/3201082/story.h tml

Toronto-
The Ontario government secretly passed legislation giving police sweeping new powers for the duration of the G8 and G20 summits.

Police are now able to jail anyone who refuses to furnish identification and submit to a search while within five metres of a designated security zone in downtown Toronto.

Critics reacted furiously to the new rules, which remained unpublicized until Thursday when a 32 year-old man was arrested in Toronto for refusing to show ID to police.

New Democrat MPP Peter Kormos said Friday the provincial Liberals created a “Kafka-esque” situation where people could be arrested for violating rules they didn’t know existed.

“This is very very repugnant stuff and should be troubling to everybody,” he said.

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) said it was “extremely concerned” that the new measures violate constitutional safeguards.

Nathalie Des Rosiers, general counsel for the CCLA said the changes are contrary to Canadian law.

“You don’t have any obligation to speak to Canadian police, to give your name or the reasons for your existence unless you’ve done something wrong — unless you’re being detained or arrested,” she said. “So on its face, it’s a dramatic change from what our constitution guarantees.”......

I'm so sorry Canadians. Good luck on getting this fixed.

Here's a partial list of happy fun times people who will be making life hard for Toronto. ( edit. happy fun time is sarcasm. I really hope Toronto gets through this trial ok. )

http://www.torontosun.com/news/g20/2010/06/18/1444 2406.html

Consider the effects on the town. It's an invasion of hostile protesters, basic scum of the earth, and upper middle income idealistic whack jobs. I may be a little unkind.

Worse has to be the multi-national security troops in town to protect their principals, butting heads with the local and Province police. Between them and the yutzes in Ottawa,
the poor cops are really in the middle. They will be the guys getting bottles and rocks thown at them. And they can't shoot back, it would look bad. All the professional protesters know that too.

Best wishes.

In the old Roman days, decimation was the cure for this kind of thing. Not that I'm promoting that, mind you.

here's another point of view on the riots...... Note the emphasis on the "Proof" that the Canadian Government is to blame, because they "so called" protesters have VIBRAM SOLES!!!!! JUST LIKE THE POLICE!!!!!!!

and if they haven't noticed, the protesters are also BIPEDS! just like the police.

If you haven't guessed, I have doubts about this link...

Any Canadians want to chime in?

Why China? How about Tehran? or Pyongyang?

Not only that, but the "provocateurs" also wear one white sock and one black sock just to throw people off:
