Hi all; First off thanks to everyone who chimed in on my vacation idea request. Since the Dragon has road construction (and I was there last year) I'm headed to Yellowstone! What are the best rides out there in that area? From the map view it looks like it'd be hard to find a road that was NOT scenic! What would you recommend? Thanks superdave | ||

You have to ride Beartooth Pass, in or out the N.E. entrance to Yellowstone. It is one of my all time favorite rides. If you can squeeze Glacier Park in that is a good one. And Hwy 12 through Lolo Pass in Idaho isn't too shabby either. When I was at Yellowstone a long time ago they had motorcycle only parking and camping. That saved a lot of time from driving around looking for spots. | ||

+1 on everything that Iamike said. You may already know this being from Sioux Falls, but on your way there the Badlands, Black Hills (Needles Hwy & Spearfish Canyon), and Devil's Tower are all magnificent. | ||

Beartooth for sure. Also Chief Joseph Highway. NE corner of Yellowstone, north of Cody Wy. Me and a couple of buddies are riding the area next Sun/Mon/Tue. Riding in the park itself can sometimes be a pain with all the tourists and RV's, especially at famous places like Old Faithful. But if you've never been, take it all in. The speed limit is only 45 in the park :-( Lodging can be expensive and hard to find during the summer. (Message edited by bking on June 22, 2010) | ||

look for passes. beartooth pass, lolo pass, lost trail pass, flescher pass all very fun rides. beartooth pass to chief joseph loop in and out of red lodge is a blast too. as mentioned, the roads in the park itself are congested with rvs and lookers. plus low speed limits, frequent construction make it a not especially fun ride. beautiful and well worth doing, but not a fun motorcycle ride. let me know when you'll be in the area, I'm in bozeman and would join for a few miles. you can hit me up marc dot fez at gmail | ||

I'll add to the fans of Beartooth Pass list. I heard it was wiped out in a rockslide a year after I was there (which was something like 4 or 5 years ago), but re-opened. I went in early June. Still about 6-8 foot snow banks along the road at that time of year. We stayed in Cook City MT which was an interesting little speck of a mountain town. Not sure how crowded Cook gets in prime summer, though. The north entrance to the park is definitely a lot less busy than the one at West Yellowstone, bit it's farther away from the big tourist draws in the park. Work in a ride that goes to Devils Tower National Monument if it's not too far out of the way. Worth seeing, even if you don't remember Close Encounters. If you are going further south, then consider the Grand Tetons as well. You can seen them on a clear day from the Yellowstone area (if you are up high). I used to go to West Yellowstone about 3 times per year, but always in winter. I could be more useful if you wanted to ride snowmobile trails (which are usually dirt Forest Service roads in the summer, come to think of it). You really can't go wrong with the scenery anywhere out there. |
