Processor on my G5 has started to fail.
Upgrade machine time, CS2 won't run on my new iMac so after dumping all over it, I'm now running CS5 Premium too.
Go figger.

I just spent a bomb on new hardware and software after saying there was no point in doing so.

Because existing hardware failed.

Thanks for that clarification, it was the G5 thing that threw me, I always think LandRover in relation to G5, & didn't make the connection.

I don't have your professional needs so anything that works, is near enough.

I've done similar automotive things like boosting the hp on a FIAT with a remap & ending up replacing clutch AND gearbox.

Best of luck with it all.

Ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
At least ya got some good stuff there.
I'm really enjoying CS5, not too difficult to get used to the changes, if you're just doing what you're used to.
It gets fun when you start discovering new stuff though.
I took Court's advise, and used my son's student status for the purchase of CS5.

>>but I thought Apples never broke or crashed.<<

I've never said that. I had a brand new one with catastrophic failure in 1998. Replaced under warranty.

The software doesn't break as often because it can't be messed with. No .exe files.

Interestingly out of the exchange they are saying that the life expectancy of modern, huge capacity hard drives in now 5 years.

Blessed are the geeks - for they make the backups.

I have new flash premium so get that up ya jobsy.

My friend has installed linux on a macbook and it's pretty sweet. Been using it like that for over a year now.
If you have nothing to lose, try a different operating system on the same hardware.
Run a ubuntu livecd without installing it and see if it pleases you.

Of course, you would have to buy a second button for your mouse.

How old was the G5? Since intel based Macs were introduced in what, 2004? That's a long ass life for a computer. I just upgraded to a Macbook Pro 15" with an i7 and 8GB of RAM. The thing is a freakin screamer.

I have a Linux box that's over 7 years old, and still runs like a champ.
I was using Ubuntu, but grew tired of the system being locked down and having to work around things to get it the way I wanted.
Ubuntu is great, just not for me any longer.
If ya wanna try an easy Linux, might I suggest Linux Mint, it's my new favorite, and runs on my 7 year old puter better than Ubuntu did.
They have a LiveCD as well.

Last of the Twin Power PC towers.

I still have working G3 and G4 towers - both retired. Although I used G4 over the weekend. OS 9.2 still works badweb.

Macbook G3 died at 6 - drive and power supply

G5 died at 5. CPU

They work pretty hard too.

My old Pentium 1 200mhz rig still works, although it doesn't get much use. I use it as my retro gaming machine for the games that just don't work in XP/7 regardless of how much you try. I always get confused and frustrated when I use it, I am spoiled by how fast and easy everything is in Win 7 vs 95.

Froggy, ever play Scorched Earth? I tried it on an XP machine, and it was chaos. Apparently the game runs as fast as the processor will allow, which makes the entire round of fighting instantaneous. You hear a shriek, and suddenly the entire terrain erupts in fireballs from one end to the other. Funny stuff.

Sword, no I haven't. A few years back when I just built my then new computer with 2.8ghz Pentium 4 overclocked to 3.6ghz, I hooked up a 5.25" floppy drive and was able to attempt to play many old DOS based games. I ran into the same CPU you did. I put in Connect 4, and did cpu vs cpu mode, and all I saw was a giant blur of the red and black checkers flying across the screen, and it did 255 games in about a second and then crashed. Good times : )

I still have a 486 DX120 that's running DOS 6.22 just for those old games.
Doom is awesome!
When it's too fast for the even older games, I just flip the Turbo button.
But that ain't very often.
I just can't see myself getting rid of a working puter.

Yeah - that's what I went for - with 8gb of RAM - although only 4gb is installed currently. Balance possibly be here later today.

Video editing performance is OK on 4gb. Probably not as good as expected, but better than the G5 tower. See how it goes with full deal.

Dealing with hi res images and magazine .pdfs is very impressive - as is all the fruit.

Anyone remember "Marble Madness"?

"Defender", or "Defender II"?

How to kill the pterydactyl in "Joust"?

I do.
