Subject: U.S. Launch of the Harley-Davidson XR1200X™

Dear Dealer:

Purpose
To communicate our U.S. launch plans for the XR1200X, the successor to the iconic XR1200™. The XR1200X models will be distributed via our usual allocation system. Our advertising and communication approach directly supports moving XR1200™ inventory this summer, and generating excitement for the new XR1200X™ 2011 model helping drive traffic to your stores. We plan to engage in XR family awareness activities that will vary in range from leveraging the newly formed AMA XR1200 Race Series to grassroots promotions.

Opportunity
The XR1200X gives you a unique opportunity to capture incremental sales. Studies show that the vast majority (85%) of customers considered no other Harley-Davidson models as their second choice when purchasing a XR model. It’s important to make sure that you understand the unique position this bike fills in the H-D lineup and what the customers of this bike desire from their riding experience. Remember that in 2009 the XR was the top seller within its competitive sales segment.

Customer Insights
These customers are common in the type of ride they desire. This is a customer who values performance attributes and a sport riding experience, but doesn't necessarily see themselves on a European or Japanese Superbike.

Key Marketing Messages

* The XR1200X is the “performance” motorcycle of the H-D family
* It’s Gritty, Dirty, Intense, Edgy, Durable.

The XR platform of motorcycles is for a slightly different type of Harley-Davidson rider; be ready to embrace these customers to insure the highest probability of sales.

3 years ago I'd have been certain that was a joke.

Some poor SOB is going to spend $12,000 for one, get dusted by a Bandit 600 and be sitting on the side of the road crying in his "doo-rag".

Wandell in his finest moment.

I just wanna know...what, exactly, IS it's market segment?

I mean, if the XR1200 was "the top seller within its competitive sales segment"...it couldn't have been up against much.

We couldn't GIVE them away.

Wow.

I do NOT miss that job. I probably shouldn't say that in a public forum....but god help me, it's the truth.

lmao, that is the first thing i though. ofcourse it was the top seller, it is the ONLY one IN the segment.

huh, and here i thought they just canned something that fit that market better...

The XR1200X has been available in Europe for over a year now (and the parts that make it different to the stock XR1200 have been available to buy in the US for the same time) so it is certainly not a new model by any stretch of the imagination.

However you have to remember that this model (like the original Xr1200) was never meant to even hit the US market at all, but were designed for European sales. This means that they will obviously sell far better over here (and do) than in the US. H-D obviously realise this but are just trying to eek out every dollar by offering these models in the USA as well.

There is a big improvement over the stock XR1200 in the front forks (the XR1200X is fitted with Showa Big Piston Forks the same as the latest GSXR Suzuki/ZX6 Kawasaki), but that is about it really ,and the difference in price over the stock model can't really be justified in my opinion.

Better to buy the stock bike and upgrade it yourself : )

>>>>We couldn't GIVE them away.

Don't feel bad. The last time I knew there had been less than 500 sold at retail and the development costs went something like $20,000,000 over budget.

It's one of the greatest engineering disasters in Harley-Davidson's history.

Someday . . . someone is going to ask why it took two years, after we got the "coming soon" announcements to roll this bike out . . . .

It's a joke. Here in the largest city in the USA, where I see 5 or 6 Buells a day, I've seen one.

Better to buy a plain 883 Sportster and upgrade it yourself . . . that's what I did 6 times.

Now Court, be honest, you only have to walk out into your garage to see 5 or 6 Buells.....

It's a joke. Here in the largest city in the USA, where I see 5 or 6 Buells a day, I've seen one.

As I said, it was always planned to be a Euro model first and foremost so if you came over here you would see a lot more Xr1200s than you will ever see Stateside. Having said that, there is a very active XR1200 forum with lots of US members on there.

Better to buy a plain 883 Sportster and upgrade it yourself . . . that's what I did 6 times.

Apart from the fact you'd never make an 883 motor into a Xr1200 motor in a month of sundays. Add in the required suspension, braking, EFi upgrades and you'd spend far more money than on a stock Xr1200 and end up with an inferior bike.

We know you don't like the XR1200 Court, but come on ; )
Maybe if you tried one you'd see just how different it is from a basic 883.

I don't see the differences between xr1200 and a modded 883 either.

but we have had a better bike since 2003 stateside.

The XR is VERY different from an 883, I'll give you that. I think Court's point was, it can be more satisfying to DIY sometimes, especially considering a lot of the compromises that were chosen in the XR platform (and yes, I *have* tried one).

Problem is, HD is about as good at marketing the XR as it is at marketing the VRSC family.

Or the Buell brand.

Maybe they really *should* stick to chrome couches.
