Looks like the 'loop current' is changing. This might be good for Florida at the moment, but worse for the Gulf in the long run. Without flow, the mess will accumulate...

I see a Leviathan and a Giant Squid...

BP and the Obama administration have said they did not want to take the measurements for fear of interfering with efforts to stanch the leaks.

That decision, however, runs counter to BP's own regional plan for dealing with offshore leaks. "In the event of a significant release of oil," the 583-page plan says on Page 2, "an accurate estimation of the spill’s total volume . . . is essential in providing preliminary data to plan and initiate cleanup operations."

Legal experts say there's another benefit for BP of not having a credible official estimate of the leak's size: the amount of oil spilled is certain to be key evidence in the court battles likely to result from the disaster. The size of the Exxon Valdez spill, for example, was a significant factor that the jury considered when it assessed damages against Exxon.

“If they put off measuring, then it’s going to be a battle of dueling experts after the fact trying to extrapolate how much spilled after it has all sunk or has been carried away,” said Lloyd Benton Miller, one of the lead plaintiffs’ lawyers in the Exxon Valdez spill litigation. ”The ability to measure how much oil was released will be impossible.”

“It’s always a bottom-line issue,” said Marilyn Heiman, a former Clinton administration Interior Department official who now heads the Arctic Program for the Pew Environment Group. “Any company wouldn’t have an interest in having this kind of measurement if they can help it.”

Today's BP press release:

BP Launches Live Webcam of Riser Flow
Release date: 21 May 2010

Today BP launched a live webcam of the riser flow. The webcam can be viewed at www.bp.com.

BP has been providing a live feed to government entities over the last two weeks – including the US Department of the Interior, US Coast Guard, Minerals Management Service (MMS) through the Unified Area Command center in Louisiana – as well as to BP and industry scientists and engineers involved in the effort to stop the spill.

BP continues its work to collect oil by the riser insertion tube tool (RITT) containment system. Once on the drillship Discoverer Enterprise, the oil is then being stored and gas is being flared. The RITT remains a new technology and both its continued operation and its effectiveness in capturing the oil and gas remain uncertain.

BP has, and will continue, to support the government’s work to determine the rate of flow from the well. Since the Deepwater Horizon accident, the flow rate estimate has been established by the Unified Command. Throughout the process, BP has made it a priority to quickly and consistently provide the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Coast Guard with requested information for the joint command structure to make as accurate an assessment as possible of the rate of flow.

The rate of flow from the riser is determined in a number of ways and by a number of variables. For instance, while the original riser was 19.5 inches in diameter prior to the Deepwater Horizon accident, damage sustained during the accident distorted the diameter at the end of the pipe by about 30 per cent. In addition, a drill pipe currently trapped inside the riser has reduced the flow area by an additional 10 per cent. Thus, some third party estimates of flow, which assume a 19.5 inch diameter, are inaccurate. As well, there is natural gas in the riser. Data on the hydrocarbons recovered to date suggests that the proportion of gas in the plume exiting the riser is, on average, approximately 50 percent.

To provide further specificity on the flow rate, the US government has created a Flow Rate Technical Team (FRTT) to develop a more precise estimate. The FRTT includes the US Coast Guard, NOAA, MMS, Department of Energy (DOE) and the US Geological Survey. The FRTT is mandated to produce a report by close of business on Saturday, May 22.

To support this, BP is in the process of providing FRTT with all requested information, including diagrams and schematics showing release points, amounts of oil and gas currently being collected on the Discoverer Enterprise, and subsea video of the oil release point.

..."In 10 years we've got four convictions," Pascal said, referring to BP's three environmental crimes and a 2009 deferred prosecution for manipulating the gas market, which counts as a conviction under debarment law. "At some point if a contractor's behavior is so egregious and so bad, debarment would have to be an option...."

Oil in the ocean isnt the end of the world its messy nasty to the animals covered in it. Life adapts life always does. Try to stop weeds ,rats Cane toads etc Or keeping diesel fuel bio clean. Change is the only permanant thing about life.
Hex Marine science was my first career I am well aware of the problems with spills. However running scared doesnt solve the problem. Nor does technological suicide.

Hex, you have totally hit rock bottom in this thread by quoting Rep. Markey for your arguments.

Rep Ed Markey is the same libtard who co-sponsored the "Cap and Trade" Bill with Waxman.

You do know that CAT is a disguised shell game meant to make a few people rich at the expense of hobbling the US economy and robbing everyone from the fruits of their labor, right?

But Cowboy, Demonizing the oil companies (Bankers, auto manufacturers, insurance companies, etc.) is just so much fun and can be done with so little actual information. There are also huge political points to be made by demonizing these companies. Never mind the hypocrisy of needing all of these companies products and services to make our daily lives possible.

It saddens me to my very core so much so that I spent most of the day crying and fasting. Iam so angry mr obama would let this spill get so bad yet we throw so much manpower and money into Iraq and gitmo. The president and first lady used vast recources to travel to copenhagen to sell chicago to the olympics committee but I guess this spill is not lucrative enough for this administration.

I think Iam going to call off work tomorrow to meditate and fast. Shame on this corporatist administration.

Shame on this corporatist administration.

Oh, that's what it's called? Hmm. ok.

I'm not blaming Obama for the spill or the time involved in stopping the leak. He couldn't do it, doesn't have a clue. ( Bush the Elder would know how, his rolodex has the right numbers to call for that.. )

If you want to give this admin. a hard time for the response to the spill, I'm sure some is deserved, I'm still trying to figure out what the swat teams were for? The politicizing of the problem is really shameful, and the hype, re: "worst disaster ever ...dooooomed....DOOOMED!...." crap from people you'd think were adults, ( Senators, news shills, etc ) absurd.
