I always considered the 883 a "girls bike", but that's just my opinion. More of a starter bike is a better description. Wonder when a custodian will out you!?
haha no i dont really care if i get called out, i'm sitting here in class if that helps you figure out who it is
my friend said he wanted a sportster, and i said that he shouldnt get a girls bike. he then told me its not a girls bike, and i then decided to ask you all so he could see who was right haha
Sportster is not a starter bike in my opinion. It is overweight and top heavy. The only starter bike HD made was the Blast! and that is no more.
I also don't think it is a girlie bike, but I suppose HD does. If you are concerned about appearances when you roll into the dealership, it may not be the bike for you.
If you want a good comfortable motorcycle however...it may not be the bike for you. Find an old M2. That was the best motorcycle ever made, and while I can't prove that, I know someone who can.
Nope, in fact it's one of my favorites for around town riding (in particular, an 883-1200 conversion). Light, narrow and lots of torque. I'm starting to think the big twins are the girly bikes.......(women are riding the lowered big twins now because they "don't want to be seen" on a Sportster). I picture big twins as huge freakin' utility vehicles and Sportsters as....well.....Sports cars.

You seem to enjoy BadWeB quite a bit, and to be honest we enjoy having you around. Please don't take the Anonymous so lightly. Being outed is only the least that can happen.
haha i just realized i messed up! i wanted to see if you guys could guess who i was by my "sitting in class" comment, but just realized it wasnt annonymous....lol so much for my fun
Seeing as the motor in your bike is a sporty based motor, are you riding a girls bike?
and i dont consider the motor the part that determines a bike as a sport bike, girly bike, or cruiser bike or whatever you want to call it

So what makes it a girl bike then? Marketing? HD doesn't advertise it as a 'girls' bike. Some dealers, mainly the ones who have no idea of riding, push it as one.
I have owned four or five Sportsters and many Big Twins and a few Buells (ok, more than a few).
The Sportster (no matter if it is 883 or 1200) is a bit more squirly than a big twin. In many respects it is harder to ride.
Big Twins tend to be very well balanced (they have to be due to weight) and somewhat lower to the ground depending on the model. When they started lowering the seat height on the Sportys a few years ago, (to appeal to vertically challenged people) they did good. I had a twin cam EGlide for a few years. My opinion is the bike was so well balanced that it gave the rider the illusion that they could ride better than they actually could. The damn frame on that thing used to flex if you were really getting into a turn. I have heard they fixed that. Lynn's Sporty was much much quicker than that bike and would absolutely get away from me with ease.
Lynn rides a Sporty (2007 XLN1200) and a Buell (XB12Scg). Out of the box the Buell is a better bike in every respect, she prefers the Sporty when I am not around because she can flat foot on it. (otherwise I have to take the XB out to the drive way from the garage so she can get on it).
Back in my younger (read that stupid) days I had a 89 inch Sportster. I ate Big Twins for lunch. I used to hear that "Girls Bike" thing a lot. The people that say that usually just bought a Big Twin or need to say that to feel better about spending too much money for a bike I guess.
I love Sportsters and I love passing Big Twins on them. They are a little harder to ride (by Harley standards) but very fun. It has two wheels and a V-twin it will be fun.
If comments about it being a "Girls Bike" bother you then you may not want to get one. They never bothered me.
I love it when guys buy Sportsters as a beginner bike for their GF or wife. I always want to ask them if she is a better rider since she is riding the Sporty.
Seriously. What makes a Sporty so difficult to ride? I've not ridden a stock one, so I'm not sure. I remember after 65 or 70 it would vibrate really bad. I had a '68 Sporty when I was younger, riding it was way fun, but mainly because the riding/wrenching ratio was backwards...
If I had to have a Harley, it would be a sportster. It's small and compact compared to the Harley behemoths.
I own a Miata and hear that Girls car crap all the time. It's especially amusing coming from some punk in a riced out Civic. I'll bet more chicks own civics than Miatas.
They arn't. Compared to a Big Twin they are Squirly... I was only comparing the big twin to a sporty. If I mistyped that I am sorry. If you get the chance ride a big twin and sportster back to back...
Spidey, you do know the S2-T is the mans version of the S2, right?
If you get the chance ride a big twin and sportster back to back... I'll give it a shot. It's more difficult than it was though. Used to we could just walk in and ride pretty much whatever we wanted. My favorite dealership is really low on bikes, I've never seen so few bikes in any showroom. I'm wondering if they're fixing to close and move everything out to their sister store. Things just haven't been the same since they ran Cameron off... Maybe a demo days thing will be around soon.
