Riddick broke out last night while I let him out to use the bathroom. Once I realized he was gone I spent from 8.30 pm until 4 am looking for him. My mother in law found him about 10 min ago. He apparently got hit by a car but was able to make it to the woods. I walked by him 50 damn times and never saw him.

This picture was taken just 3 days ago! I miss him so much already. He went nearly every where with me. Daddy loves ya buddy!

Dammit man! So sorry for your loss...

As I type this, my 16 YO Basenji is leaning against my leg, as he's wont to do in his old age. I'll be useless for the better part of a week when he passes.

Once upon a time I lost him for 3 days. Miraculously, I found him just 3 houses away from the busiest city road in Knoxville, he'd gone feral- until he smelled me. Didn't trust his eyes, but his nose let him know it was me.

Do what you have to do, grieve and cherish the memories- then if it makes sense, go rescue a deserving pooch. My GF's dog is also at my feet, gotta be one of the best and most intelligent beings I have evaaar met. She rescued her from the shelter years ago, a mutt, but I've rarely seen another one this smart.

Peace, and God's dog biscuits to Riddick...

Firebolt32, I am truly sorry for your loss. Lynn and I cannot have kids so our furry kids mean a lot to us as I am sure they do to you as well. It is never easy. Just know that you gave Riddick a loving home.

Thanks guys. It's hard to deal with for sure. I was out of it at work all day wondering where he was and what happened. I buried him tonight with his favorite goose. He could be assed out and if another dog picked that thing up he was quick to snatch it back. It still really hasn't sunk. The Red Sox are on and I have to usually kick him out of that chair above if he beats me to my office. I come around the corner and he's not there. My other 4 understand as well. My pit won't stop pacing and whining. She knows her big brother is gone.

Thanks again guys.

So sorry about your loss. I lost a dear cat that way, worried all night looking for him, only to get the worst news. It is tough, but please don't blame yourself in your grief. I'm sure he loved the life you gave him. The good times, keep 'em with you always.

sorry to hear about your loss Firebolt32. I know it is my biggest fear when I take my dog out to walk because I like to let him run free but he doesn't look out for cars.

Pets are like family and when you loose one, it really hurts. Just know Just know that you gave Riddick a loving home.

And my advise is to get another dog soon. It won't be Riddick, but it will try it's very best to win over your heart because that's what animals do!

As has been said before by others much wiser than us:

If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.
Will Rogers

Heaven goes by favor; if it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.
Mark Twain

That is terrible. When my mom died and at the funeral people kept saying sorry and it really pissed me off!! I don't know why it did but, it did so. Try and remember the good times. God bless you and RIP Riddick! get him his favorite bone to bury with him.
Chin up man! It will get better but very slowly over time.

2nd Corinthians, chapter 4 verse 18

...as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Solace to you, and my condolences for your loss.

Losing a pet is tough.
We've been through it too many times but we'll do it again.
The pain is FAR outweighed by the comfort they bring.

RIP Riddick, you were loved..

Awww, he is just gorgeous. It is the hardest thing losing a friend, whatever shape they take.
I am lucky that on the odd occasion my guy got out, he managed to find his way back (very stinky and proud of himself I might add). Had a few of those 'looking til 4am' nights too.
Godspeed Riddick-to the park on the other side.
