We need to bring back firing squads. It sounds like an inattentive truck driver (wonder if a cell phone was involved?), and if bikes hadn't been there the truck would have plowed into cars instead. Just too damned many distractions in vehicles these days... Prayers to the families of the lost and injured. | ||

I took a defensive driving course when I was younger. I'm glad I did. When I'm in traffic and stopped I always watch out for this kind of stuff. Kid you not I've had to get out of the way a couple of times. The main cause for people not stopping is the damn text messaging! Always pretend your invisible even if you have on bright neon colors! My thoughts and prayers go out to these riders and their families. | ||

In Cali we can lane split. Whenever I find myself at the back of a pack of cars at a light, I sneak between them to the front of the line, so that there are 'car cushions' behind me. It wouldn't have help a group ride like this, but I think it reduces the risk of not being seen when riding alone. Sad story, bikers beware. | ||

You are right J, that article from CBS was really badly worded. It reads like the bikes hit the truck and then the truck caught fire? I hate reading stories like this soooo much. I know I can't talk, because I put on a helmet too...but Chili gets 'that look' in my mind when he puts his on too (he just doesn't have to see it  ) It's only because I worry what someone else could do to him. There are too many of them the road...and it's not just motorcycles they don't see. I almost got into a neat t-bone with a van today, because he failed to look before pulling onto a main road! How do you "not see" a freaking big black f-truck!!?? | ||

I wonder what the cell phone law is in Arizona with regard to commercial drivers... Here in California, commercial drivers are exempt from the cell phone law. Phone or no phone, this guy was not paying attention at all... f*cking jackass, I hope he gets a brain aneurism. | ||

+1000 Wolfy! I am amazed when I ride with "more experienced" how few of them actually do leave it in first to cover themselves. Luckily I have only needed to use it once and I had given a large enough cushion in front to pull up a few feet while the cell phone using lady came to a stop where my rear tire was. Universal sign for hangup the phone was given. | ||

been hit a couple times on a bike and even in my truck. it's amazing how some people just don't see you. my daughter got rear ended a few years back, sometimes it doesn't matter what you teach them about stop lights, it just doesn't matter. someone will eventually screw it up. thoughts and prayers to all concerned. | ||

My older boy lost his first car (79 Monte Carlo) that way. Christmas eve day 2007. He's sitting at a red light and some moron in a Lexus rear ends him at about 40 mph. Way to busy with his cell phone to pay attention to the road. | ||

I've been bumped off my bike, and the husband of a lady here at work got bumped off his just a few days ago. Luckily they were low speed... in both cases, the car behind saw us move forward, assumed we were gone, and moved forward while looking elsewhere. Scary stuff. As for that CBS article, I see the commentors are ripping them a new one for screwing up the initial details. Later in the article the facts are stated correctly, but or the first 2/3 of it, sounds like the bikes hit the truck. It goes so far as to say the motorcycles got too close! Piss poor journalism to have completely contradictory information within 3 paragraphs. ~SM | ||

I got hit at a stop light once while I was driving a Ford Expedition. It's not just motorcycles people don't see. The guy who hit me was talking to his girlfriend who was sitting in the passenger seat. I was on duty and got out wearing my sidearm. I was a bit irritated. The look on his face was priceless. Oh, and it was his girlfriend's car. That experience has always made me a bit nervous on my bike at red lights though. I do check my rear mirror frequently, especially if no car is behind me. But a car can come up on you fast before you realize it, even when you are being diligent. Oh, and I hope they get a new guy at CBS to write their stories. That was terrible journalism. If you don't read the whole article it seems as if it was the motorcyclists' fault. Salt into the wounds of the families of the killed motorcyclists and the injured as well. | ||

A forth person died resulting from that crash with the stopped bikes and the trash truck. It was reported in the Arizona Republic that the driver has many citation in the past. Some asked what the cellphone laws in Arizona were, Phoenix has no texting law and it appears that it not really enforced, there is a bill on floor trying outlaw texting in Arizona and is being held to a later date according to what I read this morning. Arizona like some states seems to be a little slow about getting things done. I say this because I live it every day. 300 days of sunshine on a average, the paper reported yesterday the state was going stop the need for conceal weapon permit, but were going to tighten the purchase of weapon. That's truly horrible, as a truck driver I can see it from both sides. Unless he had a "sudden catastrophic failure" as it's called of the braking system he doesn't have a leg to stand on. In mitigation (not excusing here) drivers everywhere these days are pushed by dispatchers to get more & more done in the same time, & with onboard information systems there's a great temptation to do the messaging & inputting while driving. It's no excuse for what happened though. I once watched a truck driver rear end a car next to me & rip off the left hand mirror of my truck at a stop light. A wasp had bounced of his mirror & in through the open window then stung him in the face next to his eye. Nobody seriously hurt thankfully, but the road is a dangerous place & shit can happen awfully quickly. | ||

In my opinion this is the ONLY time that loud pipes can save lives, the sound comes out the back of the bike, right where they were hit. I keep an eye on the mirrors and when I see a car coming up fast or slow I flash my tail light and blip my throttle until they have stopped behind me. even then I cant shake the habit of flashing my tail light with my rear brake.  thanks XB Lights for making me feel safer and be more visible! thanks to D&D for making me obnoxious loud like the fags so dumbasses on cell phones can hear me when they dont see me (Message edited by delta_one on March 28, 2010) | ||

There is no missing the strobing aux brake lites on my s1. Watched a cager make a right turn from the left turn lane the other afternoon. That was across three other lanes of traffic btw. |
