I have recently become a victim of this high-jack/spammer.

I hate these people. Hacker Army for hire?
(that'd be a killer business).

I would pay for someone to get back at these bastards.

I had this happen to a friend and I love him dearly so I had to call London three times to get some answers as I thought he might be in danger. Man, was I pissed. Still have not seen the cell phone bill. It appeared to be sent from his e-mail but the reply I sent went somewhere else. I reported them to the FBI, but I doubt it is a high priority for them...

It depends if the account was actually hacked (which the link says really happened) or if someone is just spamming using the account address. You would be surprised just how much spam I seem to send myself from my work account. It's pretty trivial to forge the headers of a message so that it looks like a certain account has sent the message.

In the future, a skype to phone might be a cheaper solution for an emergency like that.

Spoofing the address is relatively easy from what I understand, but these guys are also managing to get into your contact lists. In five minutes they managed to hit every address on mine (I don't have that many addresses) by sending emails to 8-12 recipients at a time.

There was a similar thread a few weeks ago, it happened to one of Blakes friends. They "phish" your password, and then take over your account, and then send a fake distress message to your contacts.

I like to think I'm careful and can detect phishing attempts (perhaps I'm not as good as I think). All I did was reply to the message. At the time it seemed so convincing. Based on the message content, he must have had access to his emails because he even used my buddy's tag line.

After going through it again, I should have known better. The reply from the hacker gave him away. It originated from Nigeria, 3 weeks later, my hacker hit from Russia. Had I done a whois lookup...coulda woulda shoulda...

I don't ever use the address book or fill my contacts just for that reason alone. I put them somewhere else in an excel or txt file, copy/paste is easy. It's discipline. And the few Fowarded emails I get with 50+ email addresses in the TO/CC list I just delete. Then again, I am just speaking of my personal PC, you may have different requirements at a job.

This particular scam would never work on my contacts because 1.) my relatives would all be like "WTF?" and call me and/or other relatives, and 2.) my friends would just laugh their asses off.

I DID have my Gmail account "hacked" by a Chinese company that used it as a launchpad for spam. It was pretty obvious, so no one fell for it. Luckily, they left my account info in tact, but they blanked out my contacts list to make it difficult to alert anyone. That was a pain to put back together. It was my own fault though, because I had a pretty simple password. If they crack my new one, they've earned it.

Here is another scam:

a few months ago, I had this person/company contact me (email) for a new job from Career Builder. The position consisted of opening a new bank account under my name using my ID and making a thorough report documenting the event, evaluating my experience at said bank. That was it!!! Oh, and they also provide me money orders (799.99) to deposit and send back 80% of the mount to specified address (in texas) and keep the remaining for myself. That seemed easy enough. Easy money!!! There were gonna be 3 sent to me. And they said If I did good, there would be lots more money to be made!!! All this contacting was done via emails. So, in 3 days, they DHL'd 3 money orders to me, all where 799.00

So I called the money order company (on back of MO) and the money orders where indeed valid!! hmmm... they really didnt want to divulge any more info,...just yes or no... (weird) but I pressed them and they told me the money oder I had was made in Texas at XXX address for 7.99!!! LOLOL

I continued emailing them acting innocent, saying the bank thinks these are fake..what should I do?? They said: "Take them somewhere else" I said OK. I basically continued this for as long as possible so I could report this scam because I had their address or at least the one where I was sending the money to. I mean, you would think "somebody" gave a hoot!! When I called the money order company... They DIDN'T CARE! The FBI took all my info but... I don't think they cared much either.

Of course...I knew it was a sham at the getgo but I wanted to find out what the scam actually was. Now I know.

I did that on Craig's list a few times in the Bikes for sale section. I would act like I wanted the bike after I printed the ad out then all of the other e-mails that followed. I have a scammer packet in my MC safety teaching stuff to show my students what to watch out for.
I got scammer e-mails from Both Pete's and Ras's e-mail accounts. I'm wondering if I'm next on the scammer's list so I saved all of my contacts to another list off of the internet and deleted all of my contacts and safe sender list. Wondering how strong their passwords were

Don't keep your contact list online.

And FFS don't use online calendars.

Don't be part of the cloud.

Remember how life was before cell phones? Before pagers?

I have my contact list on my phone, and it's sync'd with my little black book in my safe. Calendar is in my noodle. Zero clicks to update an appointment.
