I'm at my wits end here. Ok, I'm trying to setup my main pc to allow printer sharing so my fiances laptop can print over the network. I have run that POS home or small network wizard on my main PC at least a hundred times now and still can't see myself or her laptop over the network. I ran it on her laptop and can see herself, but not me. WTF is wrong with this crap? What the hell does it take to get a printer to work over the network? Oh, my PC is hard wired into the router and her laptop is wireless. This is going into an internet router firewall. |

We need more details, what Windows are these computers running? Are they connected by wireless or wired? What printer? Is it attached to a PC or is it a network ready stand alone? Is the printer set to be shared in the Printers menu? Are all the computers on the same workgroup? |

What version of windows is each machine running? It makes a huge difference. Vista and 7 require a lot more settings than XP. |

I hate windows home networking... too much voodoo. If my Linux / samba print server is down... it's on fire. If my Windows print servers are down, it's tuesday. |

I have absolutely no issues with my Windows network. ESXi4, DC, Exchange, and SSLVPN concentrator. Clients are all domain members. iPhone talks to Exchange over the air. Workgroups suck for sharing resources. Windows Vista and Windows 7 workgroups suck balls for sharing resources. My advice to you: Get yourself a network print server so the printer is not dependent on a PC for its print queue. |

I have a Linksys print server hub, Model PSUS4. works great for all my windows XP computers, but I'll be damned if I can get any of my Windows Vista or 7 computers to see it. |

We need more details, what Windows are these computers running? Both machines are running Win XP SP2 Are they connected by wireless or wired? Desktop computer is wired. Laptop is wireless. They connect through a Netgear wireless internet router. What printer? HP Deskjet 612C Is it attached to a PC or is it a network ready stand alone? It's connected to my desktop PC. Is the printer set to be shared in the Printers menu? Yup. Are all the computers on the same workgroup? I believe so. Although, just to be sure give me a rundown on that. |

Some of those deskjets have issues being shared. Most are fine, but I have seen a few fussy ones. |

Ok, right click on My Computer, click on properties. Click on the Computer Name tab, Click change. It dosen't matter what you set the workgroup too, but making them the same on both machines can prevent networking issues. Also while you are there, make the computer names something easy to identify, like JimsLaptop or Den-Computer.
Also, make sure the firewall on both machines is off. If everything works with the firewall off, you know you set the printer up correctly, and then its just a matter of configuring the firewall. |
