So, I'm just wondering... When it the Chevy Volt supposed to be hitting the show rooms? It would be very convenient to have it's biggest competitor be unsellable right when the Volt hits the showroom.

Anyone know anything about a delivery date?

"the payback on gas saved is probably longer than you will own the car"

+1 I've said that from the start. This dolt at work bought one about the time I bought my truck and he strutted around every day about how much gas mileage he was getting and how much money he was saving and I'm driving a gas hog and it's a waste to drive a big truck all the time.
I just pointed out to him that I got 26mpg for most of a 600m trip with my $15k F150. And asked how much he paid for his ga$ saver? I live 18miles from work and he lives 50 miles from work. Do the math and don't even think about asking me to haul anything for him, ever.

Only 26mpg? I'm sure I could milk it to 30 bone stock, low 30's with some slight mods. Hell, the Corvette Z06 will get 36mpg driven right : )

Sifo - Mass production is on schedule for November this year, it will be a 2011 model.

Froggy (or someone who might know)- what would happen if you were driving uncontrollably fast down the freeway and you chucked the little key fob out the window? Would it shut down or just keep going??

Yep, it smelled fishy from the start.

The Prius I used while keyless, did have a keyfob that you were required to insert into the dash. When you turn it on, it gets locked in. A trick I used to do was push it in 99% of the way, you could still start the car but then remove the fob, I would do that so I can lock the car and let it warm up while I am in the deli. Since the fob isn't needed once the car is started, you could throw it out the window and drive away.

The higher up models have a proxy based fob, I don't think it needs to be inserted into the dash to start the car. Good question on how that one will react if the fob goes missing.

Those damn fobs! Every time we have one in the shop we have to remind the techs to keep the keyfob away from the car. If it is left within a few feet of the car it runs the battery down(the normal battery) because the car is communicating with the fob. Frickin' fobs anyway. If I ever buy a Prius somebody shoot me please, the wife and kids will understand.

On a Top Gear episode, they were in the U.S. and testing/racing at bonneville a Corvette & Cadillac & Challenger.

They were at a diner, and the host figured the key fob was close enough so he took the Challenger while it's driver ( Hammond ) was inside and made it out on to the street before it shut down. parked it there. Cars honking, bewildered driver, all great fun.

Kawasaki's big sport tour bike uses a fob, and originally was to keep going if you dropped it, and had a readout to show how many miles back you left it. Unfortunately, the fob & circuit was bought from a car company & Kawasaki decided not to pay for the extra features, ( the you lost it X miles ago part ) so if you buy their land yacht/speed toy, zipper pocket the sucker.

There was a Ford car model that always arrived at the dealer with dead batteries...depending on where on the trailer it was parked. Turned out the trunk lid light sensor was a mercury switch, and when tied down at a steep angle on the trailer....

My Father has a '04 Prius with the fob. Loves it. He was on a waiting list for the car, but a almost new one came up for sale, so he got the deluxe pkg. ( family who bought it new had new kid on the way & needed bigger car ) He wouldn't have popped for the keyless option, but now that he has it, won't buy a car without it.

I'll have to ask him to hand me the fob & take off after starting to see what happens. I'll follow in a few minutes & see how far he gets.
