So, I went to lunch today with a couple of co-workers to a place we go quite often for wings.
They do have some good wings!

The waitress, off the bat, isn't very, um... nice.

We all get the same thing pretty much every time we go, so we are ready to order when she shows up to the table. This seemed to irritate her for some strange reason....

Well, the food comes out, and a buddy had ordered onion rings, and she gave him fries. So, very politely, he asked about his onion rings, to which she replied "Can't you just eat the fries?"
He said he would like to have what he ordered.
She turned around, walked away, came back a few minutes later with his onion rings.

Well, the meal is over, and she hands us our checks. Mine is $9.63, and all I have are 3 $5 bills, so I put that in the holder and hand it to her.
She comes back with the other guys' cards, but no change for me. Then makes her exit back to the kitchen.

She comes back for the receipts, and I ask her for my change. She looked at me like I was crazy and actually said, "Your bill was only $9.65??" to which I replied, "Yes, and I gave you $15."
So, she huffs, and rips out 5 $1's and 35 cents, and puts it down on the table and gives me one of those "you suck" looks. Then walks away.

I don't know why I did it... but I left her a dollar tip. I should have just left the 35 cents, but I'm not that kind of guy I guess.

WTH was she thinking??? She just assumed that I was going to give her a 50%+ tip??

Sorry... had to vent.

You mean his onion rings?

I hate when I get service like that. I would have left the tip as well. I give the attitude I receive. I've gotten that when I've asked for no tomato and it's on the sandwich anyways. "You can't just take it off?". Yeah, I could but that's not the point. I asked for it not to be put on. When a customer asks us to install a 50" LCD I don't put up a 32" and say "Well you can see it can't ya!". My way of thinking is, if you don't like your job...DON'T DO IT! Find another line of work. I feel ya...

You can have a crap day all you want but when your wage depends on how well you treat and take care of a customer, you need to be polite and take care of said customers even if your day sucked...

maybe she was just having a •••••• day?....

If it was just poor service, I would think so. But she tried to basically take a 50%+ tip on her own accord. That doesn't fly.

I worked as a waiter for a couple of years. If you have a bad day, your customers should not know it. And you NEVER assume a tip.
Heck, one place I worked at had a policy that if you assumed a tip in this manner, unless the customer said "keep the change", you were immediately walked out the door. That is, if the manager found out about it.

I was going to bring it up to the manager, but I didn't want to chance her loosing her job.

+100 on you never assume a tip.

In fact when I waited tables I didn't even look at the tip within line of sight of the table. I just said thank you very much I hope to see you soon and left. This prevented me from betraying any disappointment or anger to a customer.

However I always remembered Good Tippers or Bad tippers.

BTW we made the state min in IL as well. However at the time it was 6.00 for regular jobs and 2.15 for servers. So in other words every time i got stiffed it cost me money to serve a person. Due to the fact that i tipped out and payed taxes on a percent of my total sales not tips.

Me neither.

We had a server at one place who, for some reason, would ALWAYS open the check book as soon as she picked it up from the table and look. Even if the customer was still sitting there.

The looks she would get, and be completely oblivious to, were classic.

The manager mentioned it to her several times, and she seemed to think that there was nothing inappropriate about it. Once he explained that her insistence with these actions would find her unemployed, she finally stopped.}

The other night I took my beloved, my son, my daugher-in-law, my precious grand daughter and my Basement Buddy Bobby(now living UPstairs in MY house watching my 52" and I am living downstairs in the basement where he belongs because HE broke HIS leg) to a restuarant and bought dinner celebrating my son's new job. I accidently gave the waitress $100 in twentys when the bill was only like $62(now before you call me cheap, it was where my son wanted to eat), the waitress gave it all back, and I insisted that she was the one that made the mistake, not me. She said she recounted it like 6 times and wondered why I gave her so much.
Anyways the moral to the story was she got a really good tip that night, I was impressed with the food, the service and the honesty. I was thinking I could have spent more on a stinky smelling candle at the Yankee Candle store across the parking lot than what I did on the tip.

The waitress isn't responsible for assembling the sandwich and it sure isn't any trouble to simply remove it. Why waste time and create stink for such a small thing?

There's way too much me, me, me in the world.

Grace rocks!

Wait staff love American tourists here.

Gratuities are not expected. Staff get wages and a tip off a local is a bonus.

I tip if its outstanding service - otherwise square up, grab a mint and split.

I actually had a server thank me one time for being so nice, because everyone else that day had been jerks.

I always tip heavy, no matter where I eat.

UNLESS...

the service sucks.

I am an all-or-nothing tipper. 50% for me is normal.

If the service is marginal, I still tip in the 40%-50% range. I tell the server to keep the change, and please send the manager out to the table. He/she walks away with a good tip, and I explain to the manager any problems or shortcomings that I observed. I explain to the manager that I left a good tip regardless.

In one instance, the next time I came to a restaurant where this happened, I got the same server. After our orders had been taken, she brought out a complimentary appetizer platter and mentioned my previous visit. She apologised right then and there, and explained to me that the kitchen was actually short handed and it was a busy night. She took responsibility for not noticing that I had the wrong side order, and for the length of time it took for it to be replaced. I told her it was quite all right and that I understood the situation. Our service that night was absolutely perfect, and the free $15 appetizer platter was icing on the cake. I made sure to mentally add the price of the appetizer when calculating the tip that night.

You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

+ 1 Dave....

I'm aware the waitress doesn't make it. Both for those who have waited tables correct me if I'm wrong, it is their job to check the order before brought to the table? For me, me, me it is trouble to remove it. Tomatoes are that nasty to me. The texture, smell and taste of a slice of tomato are foul. I sure as hell don't want to touch it. You get all the nasty tomato jizums on your sandwich.

The way it's set up here is you know the Price on the menu covers the wages of the staff and gratuities are a bonus.

correct me if I'm wrong, it is their job to check the order before brought to the table?

You are absolutely correct.

If the order is wrong from the kitchen, and it makes it to the customer... it is the Waiter's fault. Part of your job as a waiter is to ensure the customer gets what they order. You should be verifying the dish at the window, if it is wrong, get it corrected before it goes out.

If I get something brought to me that is not what I ordered, I am always very polite and understanding about it. If it is small, I don't sweat it at all. Heck, I did it, I know what it is like.
I'm a very easy customer. I usually tip 25% standard. Service has to be exceptionally bad, or, what happened today, to change that.

I'm with Firebolt32 on the subject of tomatoes. I'm allergic and I always tell my server if I order something that normally has tomatoes to leave them off... I'm allergic.

If it shows up with tomatoes, I send it back. If it comes back and they just picked the tomatoes off it, and it still has "jizums" on it, I stand up and leave the restaurant. Sometimes a bid loudly.

I REALLY hate bad service from wait staff.

To me it's the equivalent to a surgeon cutting off the wrong leg or a pro ball player who can't bat bat more than .100.

It's what you do. Don't suck at it. Be excellent at whatever you do.

I don't like the assumed tip thing. Bet if you took her out on a date and assumed she was going to put out at the end, she'd be offended.

I never send food back to the kitchen. If the food is unpalatable, I don't eat. And, I don't pay.
If the order is wrong, but it's close. I will eat it, then ask for compensation at the end of the meal.

If you are concerned with what a kitchen may do to your dinner, you probably should just not utilize that particular establishment. To expect compensation after you finish something is just plain wrong. If you do not like they way your bike is running to you return to the gas station and ask for a refund on the fuel you have used? Most reputable restaurants want you to be satisfied with your experience, and, by not saying anything until after you are finished does not allow the opportunity to correct the situation. Just my 2 cents.
