For the past couple of years I have looked and admired the wrangler. Its smaller, 4 wheel drive and looks like fun. It also has a huge aftermarket following. The newer models are now a little wider with a more modern engine that may or may not be better than the old straight 6.

Here's my hangup with the wranglers: I have an 06 xterra and I love it. Its a little much for most of my commuting but gets the job done when it needs to. Its pretty big and Iam sure weighs more than the wrangler. Has a 260 hp V6 and gets about 18 city and 21 highway.

The jeep wrangler has got to be lighter unless size is deceiving and has less power and worse fuel economy! Its not alot worse but come on? Iam not thrilled its a chrysler product but the numbers just dont add up. I simply cannot support a product I feel is missing the mark.

I yearn for a modern suzuki samuri type vehicle thats cheap and decent on gas around town. Why is no one putting something out there to compete with jeep wrangler?

Cause Jeeps are the sh!t! The only vehicle I'll buy. No Suzuki "type" can hold its weight against a Jeep. Jeeps are proven, and that's number 1 in my book. Hey, we wave to one another when we pass, who else does that ; )

I would love to have a Jeep. They sure hold their value and there is so much stuff you can do to them.
They do need to get better gas mileage...

I've owned an 85,86 CJ7, and a 98 TJ. You have to come to grips on the fuel economy , it's not geared for commuting and it's the antichrist of aerodynamics! Some day I'll own a four door sahara (sigh).

I have a '99 TJ that's lightly modded. They're loud. Rough ride. Can't carry a lot. But I love it, and most Wrangler owners do. Fuel economy is around 15 mpg highway with 33x10.5" tires and 3.73 gears.

Test drive one and see what you like. I'd wait for the new 4.0L Pentastar V6 to come out for the newest rendition of the Wrangler, the JK. Should be a welcome addition with the power it brings.

Brick aerodynamics + crawling gear ratios = Crappy fuel economy. Throw a 2.1 or some other ridiculously tall rear end on it if you want better fuel economy. Or you can let me drive it, I can double whatever the EPA fuel economy is : )

Jeep Wranglers, great vehicles, I have owned two and they are so fun to dive. But... they do love to drink gas.

Here is the problem with the whole Jeep line, it is not a "Cross-Over". Most "Cross-Overs" are nothing more than tall station wagons. They do not have the structure required to do any serious off-raoding so they are lighter and more road worthy. A perfect mix for most SUV drivers. When put through the paces with a Jeep off-road, "Cross-Overs" don't hold up. I remember one comparison with the Jeep Liberty against "Cross-Overs" like the Highlander, Escape, CRV and alike. They ridiculed the Liberty for being truck like. It took last place in the comparison. The only thing the editors could not deny, off-road no other vehicle in the comparison could match the Jeep. To test this they went to a ski slope and drove the 4-wheel drive contestants up the slope. Some vehicles struggled to get to the slope and all but one got stuck. After climbing more than two-thirds of the slope testers quit trying to get the Jeep stuck.

More than just traction from alternating drive wheels, the Jeep has the structure to climb rocks. My brother bought is first Jeep Wrangler in 1990. It was a four-cylinder base model and we put it through its paces. We drove it cross-country to Colorado and played in the Rockies during a cold winter. We also put it through its paces off-road. I still remember coming off a hill to a road with a sharp drop to the road surface. I stopped when the front tire hit the road surface and remember having to hold myself up off the steering wheel. Then a sharp right turn and teetering opposing two wheels, I finally dropped all four tires onto the road. During a comparison between a Hummer H2 and a Wrangler Unlimited, the Jeep schooled the Hummer when they decided to climb rocks. The article had some great pictures of this four-door Wrangler teetering between two rocks as an off-road instructor was coaching the editor over the rocks.

How does this apply on road? My brother had a time coming down to visit me here in NC. Twice, not once but twice a Honda Accord crashed into his Jeep Wranglers. First case his 1993 six-cylinder T-boned a high-schooler in the Accord who ran a stop sign. The jeep literally stamped the license plate into the side of the Accord. At the end the Accord was towed off totaled, and my brother continued on to my house in the Jeep. He then drove it 600+ miles back home before getting it fixed. The second time on the same road coming to visit me a woman in a Honda Accord driving home drunk from a Christmas party slammed into the back of my brother's 1998 Wrangler Sahara sitting stopped at a light. The speed limit on the highway was 55mph and the woman was running 60mph when she hit him. The Jeep was knocked out into the intersection, bounced around and landed on all four. The Accord front end was gone. The car literally started at the windshield. Second Accord too was towed off totaled. My brother drove on to my house but more concerned did have the Jeep checked out in NC before driving it home to Ohio before getting it fixed. Wranglers are tough.

I love my Jeep! I had this one for the last 14 years. Don't bother with the 4 cylinder ones, they truely suck.

I average about 14.5 MPG with the 4.2L six. It's a 90, which is the last year of the carburated Wranglers. I put an aftermarket Weber carb on it about 2 years ago and it made a good difference in power.

I owned a 86 CJ7 Laredo for about 4 years till it burnt on the side of the road and I bought this one. (Well first I hit the lotto, then I bought this. Good story, remind me to tell you about it sometime. lol)

For the summertime........

And winter.......

Cause Jeeps are the sh!t!

didnt everybody know that?! haha

My first car was a 93 YJ!!!!....it only had the four banger in it thought...: ( but the guy before me put glass packs on it, so it sounded alright lol

I bought it w/ cash (took enough time to save up for it!) it was in great shape for the year! very minimal rust, and ran and shifted great!

I didnt do much to it but put some newer tires on it, i tore out all my carpet and rhino lined the interier of it w/ herculiner (highly recomended!!!!)

They are by far the funnest summer vehicle you can find IMHO!!! take the doors and top off!!!!

I had it up till last winter when snow ice and lots of wind put me into a deep ditch which bent my frame, broke an engine mount, dented up the body just a bit, my rear drive shaft slipped out, poped a tire, and my transmition spun....

at that point i was so bummed out! i got a quote to see how much it would be to fix most of it (about 3k) then my dads buddy from work found out about it all, and said he had two "parts jeeps" he'd give me both of them for $1000. So i bought them since my dad said he'd help me build all of them into one good jeep! (i had enough stuff to make 2.5 jeeps!)

Well we tore one apart (engine out tranny out frame off body, ect.) then my dads like.....hmmm this is a big project Ian....you should just sell it all make profit, buy yourself a practical car, and i'll let you get your own bike.

i was pretty pissed but at the same time i was then able to buy myself a buell!!! I'll get another Jeep eventually! they are by far my favoright!

My 2000 Wrangler is a downtown terrorizing go cart monster.
Want to make the front end hop to move some pedestrians out of the crosswalk a block away? check.
Need to sneak over a curb to pass BMWs spinning their wheels in the snow and they are going nowhere? check.
Park in the tightest spot? check.
Cruise with the top down and doors off and have the bicycles pass you? check.

Fun Fun Fun.

Sounds like us - 2 jeeps and 6 buells. My 92 YJ will go just about anywhere I tell it to, won't complain...but won't pass many gas stations either. 4.0 I6, 5 speed, 3.07 gears and 31x10.50 tires mean fifth gear is WORTHLESS, it falls flat on its face. I need to re-gear it for the bigger tires. I average 15 in town (let's get real, I'm not taking a rolling tent on a long highway trip!).

Creature comforts? Forget it. Smiles-per-mile? Nothing (on 4 wheels) beats it! First thing I did when I bought it (used) was strip the interior and have the whole tub Line-X'd. No carpet, no mildew...no floor plugs. If it gets 'too muddy' (hasn't happened yet) I can just hose it out : ) 153k miles and I just put a clutch in it.

Here's yesterday:

I owned a 88 YJ and I am still abit sad I sold it to buy my Buell. Loved the truck. Like someone mentioned above they are tough. While driving down a city road at 35 a minivan pulled out directly in front of me and the license plate on my Jeep was folded back. That is it! Minivan went home on a stretcher. Drugged/drunk driver and children were all ok. I miss it and will own another. There is no better summer vehicle with 4 wheels.

Getting ready to take off...

4.2L with Webber and all the emissions/vac stuff removed. After that I could use 5th on the highway not going up hill. Averaged 10mpg in the city but only slightly less spm than the Buell. 33" with 4" suspension and a 3"body lift the previous owner put on.

I had an '80 CJ5 for a few years and loved it. It had the 151CI Iron Duke and could barely pull itself out of it's tracks but would climb a telephone pole if it could get traction. Black on black with 32 X 11.5's, soft top and doors. Man that was a fun ride, but the rear frame looked like a bunch of red ants holding hands.

I owned a YJ. 4cyl 5 spd. I put over 100k on it in 3 years. Funnest vehicle I have ever owned, and I will find another some day. And yes. Very tough. Got in 2 accidents with mine, and slightly bent the front bumper. The other cars (one a full size Tahoe) didn't fare so well.

I drive an '87 YJ. We call it the TitanMobile (we got it for the dog).

I am just finishing up putting a new clutch in it, because the hydraulic, concentric clutch slave unit blew, and I thought it best to do the clutch/flywheel at the same time.

It has a 258CID I6, with the BA10/5 Peugeot, and the 231 transfer case.

Next time I'm in it for major stuff, I'm going to put a V8 into it.

Possibly a complete driveline from this company:

When I swapped my clutch out Hex I put in the AX-15 trans because those Peugots are crap as I am sure you have heard. Straight swap although I did have to enlarge the bushing the pilot shaft of the trans goes into on the back of the engine.

Novak makes great stuff.

It wasn't a Jeep as one would normally think but my mom had an '85 Grand Wagoneer with a 360. We got it soon after I started driving, and she'd probably still kill me if she found out some of the things I did with that car.

My first Jeep was a J10 pickup with the I6. That truck would be still running if the Wisconsin hadn't claimed it after homecoming one at collage. Ah, the memories. The very first brand spanking new vehicle that I ever bought is the one that I am still driving, a 96 Cherokee. Jeep are bullet proof.

love jeeps!!!

we've had a 94yj (4cyl auto, sucked), 98tj great 10yrs 0 problems) and now a 09 unlimited rubi. there simply isn't any other vehicle that even comes close! joined rausch creek offroad park last year, nice place. had the wife's 09 rubi there when it was 2 weeks old, gotta knock the new off of it! so far it's doing 22-23hwy, 17-18 local.

that being said, a jeep is like a bike, you have to "want" it for it to be worth it. it is not a car.

in my opinion the last tj's with the 4litre 6cyl were the best one's. the jk is nicer but feels less like a jeep, too smooth and quiet. def wait for the new motor. the current v6 is not a great match, truck is just too heavy for it.

I love Jeep Wranglers, but when it came down to it I bought a 2004 Land Rover Discovery because I wanted something that was great to look at, fun to drive, and very capable in off-road situations (which I do). The gas mileage sucks - around 11 mpg, but you know that before you buy it. It has custom steel bumpers with a winch and I feel really safe in it.
On the other hand, there is something totally hot about a guy in a jeep wrangler with the top off (off the jeep, not the guy)!

Here's mine....a 1980 CJ-7. Have owned it since 1982 . Wheeled it for a few years then got the bug to make it big and shiny. Six inches of lift, 36 inch Super Swampers on 15x12 Mickey Thompson Alcoa wheels, fiberglass body,4:56 gears,Jeep 258 inline six, 4 sp trans . It was a feature vehicle in Petersons 4 Wheel & Offroad magazine and has placed twice at the Bloomsburg Pa.nationals.
